...   bringing the total number of federal charges against Trump to 40.   The walls are closing in on The Don.

Not necessarily. His pet judge will be hearing the case so there's a good chance he gets off, and then by the time it's appealed and taken away from his pet judge it'll be well after the elections.

The Washington Post - Half the GOP doesn’t think Trump had sensitive documents at Mar-a-Lago

27 July 2023

In early June, the federal government made public a 49-page indictment targeting former president Donald Trump. ...

And yet new polling from Marquette Law School indicates that half of Republicans don’t believe he had any such documents at his home.

Not really surprising - MAGAs don't trust the Deep State. ...

EDIT  "This is nothing more than a continued desperate and flailing attempt by the Biden Crime Family and their Department of Justice to harass President Trump and those around him," Trump's campaign said in a statement.

Does anyone doubt my previous comment about his limited intelligence? If he wanted to know what was the dumbest thing he could do to guarantee his conviction, this would be it. This really is a big deal and it will be taken very seriously by the powers that be.

At this point the only possible way any other Republican presidential candidate can win the Republican nomination is Trump convicted of something heinous before the vote or before the election and then ruled out of contention by the Supreme Court.

All the Republican candidates need exactly that to happen. It's the only way they can win. The frontrunners have all but promised to pardon Trump. It's a chaotic situation.

The way it's going at the moment, Trump is likely to be the Republican nominee. However, while this sort of thing fires up his base, it won't play well in the general electorate. His base doesn't make up the entire electorate, and I question whether there would be enough of them to win the election.

As to pardoning him? Well, like I say, if he's truly as innocent as he says he is, he should have his day in court and prove to the world that he's not a thief/criminal/sex pest/liar (the list goes on).

Interesting article here by a professor who has authored several popular books on the constitution and now on the subject of pardons. Ford pardoned Nixon before Nixon was charged with any crime apparently.

TRUMP ONLY A FEW INDICTMENTS AWAY FROM CLINCHING G.O.P. NOMINATION

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—After the special counsel Jack Smith brought new charges against Donald J. Trump, political experts agreed that the former President is but a few indictments away from clinching the Republican nomination.

With felony counts in the double digits, Trump is well ahead of his closest rival, Ron DeSantis.

Harland Dorrinson, a prominent G.O.P. pollster, said that, “for today’s Republican voter, felony counts confer instant credibility, and, by that measure, no other candidate comes close to Trump.”

He added that the pressure is on DeSantis “to get indicted for something—and fast.”

“There’s a chance that he could be charged with human trafficking for transporting migrants from the Mexican border to Martha’s Vineyard,” Dorrinson said. “But that indictment might be too little, too late.”

Trump crowned? No faux King way!

The article mentions a possible Trump self-pardon: Before January 20, 2021, past-Trump could have theoretically signed a pardon for future-Trump to use, and hid it away.

One, Trump is a boar and a show off. He always admits when he commits a crime, and he can't help but show multiple people the proceeds of his crime.

Two, Trump doesn't believe he's guilty of anything, because a king/dictator/God can only be innocent.

Three, Trump's not that clever.

Four, even if he did, it may delay Justice, but even the most conservative Justice Clarence Thomas won't buy a self-pardon.

I thought this bit was quite relevant, just a pity to most Republicans and Trump's base it won't mean Jack (pardon the pun):

Irony is dead, Chapter Gadzillion. Semafor’s Benjy Sarlin notes:

The man who spent seven years telling rally crowds about how Hillary Clinton’s lawyers destroyed email servers “with bleach” (it was actually software) is accused of telling his underlings to delete surveillance footage that was requested by the government.

I would point out here that I think Trump should hold himself to higher standards than anyone else given he was the president, but then I remembered he has no standards, or morals, or ethics.

Great quote today on CNN: 'Donald Trump is the Matryoshka doll of crime'.

Maybe it might not be just Trump and Biden a la 2020 all over again in the end, here's a good long look at a possible 4-way race (unlikely, I know - but you never know as well):

The Washington Post - Trump PAC has spent more than $40 million on legal costs this year ...

29 July 2023

Former president Donald Trump’s political group spent more than $40 million on legal costs in the first half of 2023 to defend Trump, his advisers and others ...

That total is more than any other expense the PAC has incurred during Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign and, according to federal filings from earlier this month, more than Trump’s campaign raised in the second quarter of 2023.

It will bring the PAC’s post-presidential legal spending to about $56 million ...

Trump’s advisers say the costs of providing lawyers for dozens of people are necessary and will continue mushrooming as investigations continue, trials are scheduled and the possibility of indictment looms.

The NY Times - $60 Million Refund Request Shows Financial Pressure on Trump From Legal Fees

29 July 2023

The political action committee that former President Donald J. Trump is using to pay his legal bills faced such staggering costs this year that it requested a refund on a $60 million contribution it made to another group supporting him ...

Excellent news (for lawyers)  🙂
