The coalition government has announced they want to restrict late voter registration.

A very cynical move .... history shows late votes favour the left and they know they're already on thin ice Who knows how poor support for the coalition will be by the time the next election comes.

Unfortunately their move comes at a time when institutions like government should be making moves to build trust to counter rejection from the likes of sovereign citizens and so on.

This is very short sighted - a complete lack of nation building.

On the up side, their own attorney general is kicking up a stink.

No surprises then.

Also: https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/prime-minister-christopher-luxon-dismisses-greens-tauranga-rail-petition-says-roads-first/4CV2MSQTBBBKVO22HANEF6FGXA/

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has dismissed a Green Party proposal to extend the Auckland–Hamilton passenger rail line to Tauranga, saying his Government is focused on delivering road infrastructure to meet the region’s rapid growth.

“Others can talk about lots of ideas – and that’s lovely – but we’re the party that gets on and gets things built,” Luxon said during a visit to Tauranga on Thursday.

How ridiculously short-sighted is this? He obviously has the roading lobby in his pocket 🙄

I have logged OIA requests about this (although it seems that Judith Collins in her statutory capacity as AG has already told them it violates human rights). In addition to the serious request to MoJ about the advice they gave ministers on these changes, I was also pretty annoyed at David Seymour, so he gets one too.

Dear David Seymour,

The coalition agreement provides that all coalition policies must be evidence based.

I write to you to request all documents available regarding dropkicks and their effects on elections in Aotearoa New Zealand. I request the formal definition of dropkick and your evidence to suggest that dropkicks are negatively impacting electoral processes. I request the evidence you used to determine that making sure dropkicks must be registered to vote before election day will positively influence both the speed and quality of elections in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Yours faithfully,

etc.

Go ahead, Dave. Tell me the reason you refuse my OIA request on dropkicks is because the information requested does not exist.

"What exactly are you announcing?"

You know it’s a tough day at the office for a minister when they’re asked: “What exactly are you announcing?” at a press conference they called to make an announcement.

But that’s the question Workplace Relations Minister Brooke van Velden faced this afternoon at what her office had dubbed a “Health and Safety Reform Construction announcement”.

There were two parts to her “really exciting announcements about the Government’s plan for the construction sector as it relates to health and safety”:

“We’re starting off with consulting on changes to the scaffolding rules,” because “the rules are far too complex and taking up a lot of cost”.

So what changes to scaffolding is she planning? “I don’t know yet,” she replied. “And that’s the exciting part about this."

But she must know what needs changing? “The real fear is that the rules at the moment seem very unfair. So people believe that at any level on a one-storey house, they need to be using scaffolding. We don’t think that’s appropriate.”

So she’ll remove the need for scaffolding for one-storey houses? “Well, we don’t actually have that answer at this particular point in time,” she replied.

So what exactly is she announcing then? “We are announcing that we are consulting with the sector,” adding while it might sound like a small thing to journalists, it’s actually “really big”.

I don't want to compare her or the coalition to the Trump daily narratives, but it does read like that. Lots of words about being great and big, and that's where it stops.

By the way, I think it's terrible the NZ Herald puts this kind of information behind a paywall.

Govt to increase Crown body board members’ fee ranges, in some cases by 80%

The Government has quietly agreed to raise the range of fees board members of Crown bodies could be paid, in some cases by 80%.

Under the increase, revealed in a Cabinet document uploaded online without fanfare today, the top potential annual fee for chairs of governance boards would rise... to more than $160,000.

That compares with the top amount of $90,000 in the previous framework issued in 2022.

The Cabinet Circular was released on the same day the Prime Minister used his weekly post-Cabinet press conference to celebrate tax relief the Government has introduced. At last year’s Budget, it promised working-age New Zealanders would benefit on average by $16 a week from tax cuts.

Meanwhile, no pay rise for you. And they know it doesn't look good, so they don't make an "announcement" like the stupid scaffolding thing.

OMG. They're announcing consulting when they used to slag Labour off for doing the same thing. What a bunch of bald faced lying hypocrites. Looks like this government is a government for meetings not progress.

Where's my tunnels I was promised?

Yes, to Key, also Ardern at certain events. I remember Helen Clark getting booed at a V8 event at one point. It happens.

Cool, thanks...I couldn't quite remember - guess I didn't pay as much attention to politics back then as I do now.

You jogged my memory and now I do vaguely remember Key getting a bit of booing and flak at something, but that's my most recent memory of that sort of thing.

I think a few politicians in the current lot have a similar fate to look forward to in the future as well. Seymour (for example) isn't even half as popular as he thinks he is.

A tobacco product tax cut slated for one year has been extended by two | RNZ News

The tax break for Heated Tobacco Products (HTPs) made by Phillip Morris has been extended for an extra two years.

In July 2024, the government cut the tax on HTPs in half, in what it said would be a one-year trial subject to an evaluation.

But NZ First Associate Health Minister Casey Costello told RNZ the evaluation would now be done in July 2027 and the reduced tax rate would apply to HTPs at least until then.

The cut was made despite health officials telling Costello there was no evidence HTPs worked to stop people smoking or were significantly safer than cigarettes.

Costello told Cabinet she had her own "independent advice" which, when she released it later, turned out to be five articles that were either about different products, outdated, or offered only weak support for her view.

This government is laser-focused on hard-working everyday New Zealanders that are battling a cost of life crisis.

Let's help the tobbaco industry and landlords.
