Luxon's so popular (not) he's getting booed at sports events. Has this happened to any PM before?

Yes, to Key, also Ardern at certain events. I remember Helen Clark getting booed at a V8 event at one point. It happens.

Unusual for a first term prime minister perhaps. NZ generally gives PMs some room on the first term.

By the way, I think it's terrible the NZ Herald puts this kind of information behind a paywall.

Govt to increase Crown body board members’ fee ranges, in some cases by 80%

The Government has quietly agreed to raise the range of fees board members of Crown bodies could be paid, in some cases by 80%.

Under the increase, revealed in a Cabinet document uploaded online without fanfare today, the top potential annual fee for chairs of governance boards would rise... to more than $160,000.

That compares with the top amount of $90,000 in the previous framework issued in 2022.

The Cabinet Circular was released on the same day the Prime Minister used his weekly post-Cabinet press conference to celebrate tax relief the Government has introduced. At last year’s Budget, it promised working-age New Zealanders would benefit on average by $16 a week from tax cuts.

Meanwhile, no pay rise for you. And they know it doesn't look good, so they don't make an "announcement" like the stupid scaffolding thing.

One thing is guaranteed, the rich can always justify greed. And hey, they'll end up on a board too one day (probably quite soon considering the great job they're doing).

“The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.” -John Kenneth Galbraith

"What exactly are you announcing?"

You know it’s a tough day at the office for a minister when they’re asked: “What exactly are you announcing?” at a press conference they called to make an announcement.

But that’s the question Workplace Relations Minister Brooke van Velden faced this afternoon at what her office had dubbed a “Health and Safety Reform Construction announcement”.

There were two parts to her “really exciting announcements about the Government’s plan for the construction sector as it relates to health and safety”:

“We’re starting off with consulting on changes to the scaffolding rules,” because “the rules are far too complex and taking up a lot of cost”.

So what changes to scaffolding is she planning? “I don’t know yet,” she replied. “And that’s the exciting part about this."

But she must know what needs changing? “The real fear is that the rules at the moment seem very unfair. So people believe that at any level on a one-storey house, they need to be using scaffolding. We don’t think that’s appropriate.”

So she’ll remove the need for scaffolding for one-storey houses? “Well, we don’t actually have that answer at this particular point in time,” she replied.

So what exactly is she announcing then? “We are announcing that we are consulting with the sector,” adding while it might sound like a small thing to journalists, it’s actually “really big”.

She did announce this though - really, very important stuff 🙄

Yup, a complete waste of time in power. The word that comes to mind is 'petty'. So so petty.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/568388/last-minute-change-puts-oil-and-gas-cleanup-decisions-in-ministers-hands

So consultation doesn't happen anymore, and any politician can just make decisions like this?

Actually, I suppose that's not strictly accurate - Shane Jones did consult with someone before making this change:

He was unapologetic about a lack of consultation with others, including iwi.

"So in the future the engagement will happen. This highly technical matter was not the subject of consultation in a detailed way, it was dealt with with a great deal of confidentiality. And in terms of providing a Māori dimension, I interviewed myself."

How long until our next election again? I can't wait to vote these clowns out.

Ooooh don't forget the announcement that they're about to begin consultation with industry on whether scaffolding is required on single-story houses. That could've saved me as much as $60/year over a 50-year life of my house!

This guy argues the point that it's not just the cost of butter but the entire food chain is broken, and things like farmers markets could be the answer.

Hey, NZ Government....time to say "No" to the USA again

https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360776778/fbi-opening-base-wellington-after-director-kash-patel-makes-secret-visit-capital

We did it with Nukes, so lets keep the highly unstable "genius" the hell out of our back yard.

The FBI and other 3 letter spaghetti agencies have no rights to be in NZ.

To be honest, the USA scares me more than China does.
If the USA pulls away with their USA first, kills of foreign aid etc , then yes, China and BRICS will step up in your place.
And that is 100% your fault and your problem.

Cool so we didn't do that digital services tax to appease the orange con so that we wouldn't get a 10% tariff.

New Zealand hit with surprise 15% Trump trade tariff

Can we go ahead and do it now? Maybe throw in a few nice-to-haves like the right to break DRM for right-to-repair, Don't Kill Games etc.?

I think no country should give anything away first. These "leaders' should be well aware by now the orange con will not stick by his word.

The government should change this issue:

NZHerald: The parents of the man released a statement to NZME to the effect that they believe the decision is deeply unfair to their son. “He is a New Zealander, adopted by New Zealanders under New Zealand law, and has known no other home,” the statement said. “The Adoption Act is clear that an adoptee is to be treated as our natural-born child in every respect. Yet, due to an injury that occurred before his adoption, he is now denied ACC-funded treatment for a condition that only manifested later in life.”

People apply for this to have ACC cover the cost of counselling or psychiatrist. ACC is part of the health system in NZ and should cover all New Zealanders. The intent of the adoption act is very clear.

Another case in similar circumstances:

Stuff: [Shortland St star] Alison James moved back to New Zealand from Canada with her 20 year-old intellectually disabled son Jaz - only to find he didn’t meet Ministry of Education criteria for specialist school support.

It's just not a sensible situation for our country in any sphere to have New Zealand citizens with only partial education and health access. Edit: Video is available on the link. Article itself requires login.

National Party president Sylvia Wood believes Christopher Luxon’s “humanity” isn’t as visible to voters amid declining preferred Prime Minister ratings for the National leader.

Maybe that's because, well, he doesn't really have much of it? Ditto charisma.
