Extra: a look at the "presidential immunity" thing that Trump might try and invoke and the chances of it working (or not):

Great article, very informative.

"Oh, what a tangled web we weave, When first we practise to deceive!"

and that has been a major tenet of Tramps playbook!

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

In my humble opinion, only three classes of voters have a real interest in seeing Trump as president again.

1) The dumb ones, who think he is the least bit interested in getting them out of social conditions as a reward for their stupidity (which he will promise them).

2) The supersmarts who present their very own economic order to the orange donkey (who thinks he belongs to them because he has screwed those mentioned in paragraph 1), have him sign off on it and steer him with goodies so that they can go about their business even better and undisturbed in the shadow of this multi-media glittering but lazy president.

3) The crude tabloid press, which gets its circulation boosted with daily airs and graces.

BTW: A social order in which a president has absolute immunity can never be a democracy. But as a republican he does not have that claim.

The Guardian - ‘Donald’s an idiot’: Michael Cohen says Trump’s rebuffing of Giuliani could backfire

23 Aug 23

Donald Trump is an “idiot” for not paying legal expenses incurred by his attorney the former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani in the Georgia election subversion case, Trump’s former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen said.

Donald’s an idiot,” Cohen told CNN of the former president. “Let me just be very clear when it comes to paying money, he is truly an idiot.

He has not learned yet that [there are] three people you don’t want to throw under the bus: your lawyer, your doctor and your mechanic. Because one way or the other, you’re going to go down the hill and there’ll be no brakes.”

Related to the story above about the IT manager Yuscil Taveras, the unsung hero,

He is the first witness at Mer-a-Largo to enter into cooperation agreement, but I'm sure he's not the last.

From a month ago:

Slate: The Real Goal of the New Mar-a-Lago Charges Against Trump

On Thursday, the Florida grand jury that indicted Donald Trump and his valet, Walt Nauta, in June for obstructing a grand jury investigation and conspiring to willfully retain classified documents, filed a superseding indictment. That means the grand jury issued a new charging document to replace the old.
...
The new indictment adds a new defendant, Carlos de Oliveira, Trump’s property manager at his Mar-a-Lago property. More importantly, it also adds explosive new charges that include allegations of a conspiracy to corruptly persuade another person to alter, conceal, delete, and mutilate security camera footage at Mar-a-Lago.

That footage presumably documented the unlawful retention of government documents. The new allegation is that Trump sought to have it destroyed after receiving a grand jury subpoena for it.
...
Without minimizing the importance of those legal facts, one can state the obvious: These allegations are dynamite for a trial jury. Special Counsel Jack Smith would not have allowed the grand jury to include the charges unless he had compelling evidence to prove them. That evidence at the very least appears to include testimony from Yuscil Taveras, a Mar-a-Lago IT employee whom de Oliveira allegedly cornered in an audio closet days after Trump received the subpoena and told “the boss” wanted the server deleted.

Saw this yesterday - if these numbers are accurate, this should be highly concerning for Trump and his cronies:

Looks like Trump's team is trying to keep Trump from saying anything that can be used against him in a court of law

That train has left the station, been refurbished twice, been retired, and been melted down for scrap.

The Guardian: Trump’s plan to skip debate shields him from legal exposure

Donald Trump’s decision to spurn the Republican primary debate on Wednesday in favor of a pre-taped interview with Tucker Carlson solves the political question of how to inflict damage on the 2024 field, but it also eliminates concerns his remarks in the high-profile event could increase his legal exposure.

The former president confirmed over the weekend that he would not attend the debate in Milwaukee, saying in a post on his Truth Social platform: “New CBS poll, just out, has me leading the field by ‘legendary’ numbers… I WILL THEREFORE NOT BE DOING THE DEBATES.”

Instead, Trump has settled on counter-programming the debate by having the interview he recorded with the former Fox News host go live at the same time, with the aim of starving the other Republican presidential candidates of attention and publicly humiliating Fox News, which is hosting the debate with the RNC.

The move to upstage the debate tackles Trump’s political goals for his 2024 campaign, but it also quietly solves worries that Trump could deepen his legal jeopardy were he to be questioned about his four criminal cases by debate moderators or the other candidates.

Criminal defendants typically avoid speaking publicly about their cases, because prosecutors could use their statements against them. Trump has developed a pattern of discussing his indictments after getting angered about the framing of questions.

The interview with Carlson is not expected to touch on any of his legal issues...

I wonder how many people will actually tune in on Twitter to watch it though, as opposed to the proper, actual debate?

Given that the debate is going to be, what, de Santis and a few other no hopers, probably close to 100%.

The two-tier justice system in practice:

NBC News: What happens if Trump violates his Fulton County bond conditions?

After Donald Trump surrenders to Fulton County authorities Thursday, the former president will be released from custody in Georgia under an already agreed-upon set of conditions, including a $200,000 bond.

As part of the conditions, Trump will be prohibited from doing anything a judge could interpret as an effort to intimidate co-defendants or witnesses or “otherwise obstruct the administration of justice.”

More specifically, Trump “shall make no direct or indirect threat of any nature” against any co-defendant, witness or victim, the community or property in the community.

“The above shall include, but are not limited to, posts on social media or reposts of posts made by another individual on social media,” reads the bond order, entered Monday by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee.

So what happens if Trump, who has previously lashed out at efforts to restrict his comments on social media, violates the order?

The practical difficulties of imprisoning a former president and the leading candidate for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination in the Fulton County Jail make it extremely unlikely that a single violation of his release conditions, unless it’s especially egregious, would land Trump in pretrial detention, Georgia legal experts say.
...
Judges have a variety of options to ensure a defendant’s compliance with a bond order short of issuing an arrest warrant, and they usually don’t like to send defendants to jail after they’ve already posted bond, Morrison said.
...
If Trump makes social media posts that Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis considers threatening, he could be ordered to attend a hearing at which McAfee would review his conduct and determine whether it really violated the conditions of his release. If McAfee were to rule that Trump did violate the conditions, he would decide the appropriate punishment.

The Guardian - Republican debate live

Almost all GOP candidates would support Trump as nominee, even if convicted

... the debate continued with the moderator Bret Baier asking the candidates to raise their hands if they would support Donald Trump as the party’s presidential nominee, even if he is convicted in one of the criminal cases he is facing.

All candidates raised their hands, with the exception of the former Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson.

Asked why he did not raise his hand, the former Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson said the Republican party needed to take a look in the mirror.

I did not raise my hand because there’s an important issue we as a party have to face,” Hutchinson said.

"Well over a year ago, I said that Donald Trump was morally disqualified from being president again as a result of what happened on January 6. More people are understanding the importance of that, including conservative legal scholars who says he may be disqualified under the 14th amendment from being president again, as a result of the insurrection. This is something that could disqualify him under our rules, and under the constitution. And so obviously, I’m not going to support somebody who’s been convicted of a serious felony, or who has (been disqualified) under our constitution, and that’s consistent with our RNC rules, and I hope everybody would agree with that."

A minority of one candidate, who is an extreme long shot.
