This is nothing new. There have been movements like this since the end of the second World War. The modern version started with the tea party. Half of America may support this kind of thing to one extent or another, but the other half is vehemently opposed. If it actually happened I think the country would split up, probably violently. America has a history of going to the brink, then pulling back. One branch of government usually reigns the others in. The current activities of the Justice Department are heartening and give me hope.

Apparently, we have our own Tea Party !

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand_TEA_Party

The party was founded by two former Auckland mayoral candidates, John Hong and Susanna Kruger, and it includes a third; John Palino, who ran his electorate campaign from Florida, where he is currently living during the COVID-19 pandemic.[4] At its creation, the party was co-led by Hong and Kruger.[2] The party's website describes Roger Douglas as its patron.[6]

The United States’ political center of gravity is to the right of other countries’, partly because of the lack of a serious left-wing party.

You can fault the far-right Republicans for many, many things, but you have to admire their determination. They are always playing the long-game.

Leading up to Trump election, we had decades long process of loading the supreme court, with the even longer view of of over-turning Roe-v-Wade, the Constitution of the United States generally protected a right to have an abortion.

If Trump weren't so profoundly ignorant and criminally corrupt, the US could have turned into something similar to Russia.

Below is the real book cover for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's memoir:

ABC news interviews Senator Tim Kaine, Democrat Virginia, on “This Week.”

Kaine said in an interview with ABC anchor.

“In my view, the attack on the Capitol that day was designed for a particular purpose at a particular moment and that was to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power as is laid out in the constitution. So I think there is a powerful argument to be made” that Donald Trump can be disqualified from running in the 2024 presidential elections under the 14th amendment.

Candidates vowing to pardon Trump shows "complete lack of a moral compass"

Funny how the more influential you are, the more US judicial courts becoming more lenient. Trump's friend Jeffrey Epstein was successfully convicted in 2008 by a Florida state court of procuring a 14 year old child for prostitution.

Epstein served almost thirteen months in custody, but with extensive work release. He was convicted of only these two crimes as part of a controversial plea deal; federal officials had identified thirty-six girls, some as young as 14-years-old, whom Epstein had allegedly sexually abused.

Newsweek: Trump Poses 'Danger' to Witnesses, Threat Must Be Neutralized: Kirschner

...While speaking to a radio host, former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner was asked if Trump is more of a threat to witnesses than other organized crime or RICO [gangster] cases he has tried.

"I have an even graver concern for Donald Trump because his reach is so broad, his followers are so rabid at times and so detached from reality. I'm sorry, this is a cult. And so, yes, I am concerned that the judges have not yet stepped up to address the danger, the ongoing danger, the demonstrated danger of Donald Trump to witnesses, to jurors, to prosecutors, to judges and to their families," Kirschner, a former U.S. attorney and frequent Trump critic, said.

He continued: "I hope at some point the judges realize that Donald Trump is a danger to the community, and he should be detained pending trial because that will begin to neutralize the threat, in part because you'll take his megaphone away. I think we're going to be having that conversation in the months to come."

Saw this in a book (a novel) I'm reading: "The US doesn't have a justice system, it has a legal system."

I'm hoping that the apparent leeway being afforded to Donald Thug is just a sign of a longer game that prosecutors are playing, namely, continually repeating, without malice or insult, the details of the charges faced by Thug, so that even his diehard supporters must inevitably begin to understand the gravity of his offenses.

'Course, I may be dead wrong 🤪

The Washington Post - Opinion - How Trump could win by losing, and delay his trial date

04 August 2023

Any day now, Donald Trump’s lawyers are poised to unveil the former president’s shoot-the-moon defense against election-related charges: that Trump possesses absolute immunity from prosecution for what they claim are his official actions as president. ...

Trump’s lawyers plan to argue that the actions cited by federal prosecutors as criminal violations were within the scope of Trump’s constitutional duty as chief executive to “take care that the laws be faithfully executed.”

This is a long shot, but one that holds out the prospect that Trump could delay the case beyond the March 2024 trial date set last week by U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan and possibly beyond the presidential election.

I think Trump and his cronies got the use of the word "executed" mixed up.

Washington Post: New York attorney general again seeks sanctions for Trump in civil case

New York Attorney General Letitia James asked a civil judge on Tuesday to impose sanctions against Donald Trump and his attorneys, saying they improperly relied on already rejected arguments in seeking the dismissal of a $250 million lawsuit against the former president.

Attorneys from James’ office argued that lawyers for Trump and other defendants in the case, including the Trump Organization and two of Trump’s adult children, have pushed meritless arguments in legal pleadings at least five times, most recently in a pretrial summary judgment motion submitted a month ago and made public last week.

The arguments they cited include that James, the top legal officer in the state, doesn’t have legal standing or authority to bring the case against the former president and his Manhattan-based real estate, golf resort and hospitality company — claims that were rejected by New York Supreme Court Justice Arthur Engoron in October and November, and by an appellate court in June.

Trump also said in recent court filings that the public was not harmed by any of the business deals James has questioned, and that banks and lenders were warned by Trump accountants that the figures in his annual net worth statements were not verified. James’s team argued that those defenses are also improper and were rejected by Engoron last year.
