Reuters - Three weeks in, Iran war escalates beyond Trump's control

  • Iran defies US-Israeli strikes, allies spurn Washington's calls

  • Analysts highlight Trump's miscalculations, lack of clear exit strategy

  • Rising gas prices and troop deployments threaten support for Trump and his Republicans

  • Trump struggles to control narrative as Iran blocks oil shipments, launches missiles

WASHINGTON, March 21 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump ends the third week of the Iran war confronting a crisis that seems to be slipping out of his hands ...

Trump, who took office promising to keep the U.S. out of "stupid" military interventions, now appears to control neither the outcome nor the messaging of a conflict he helped to initiate.

The lack of a clear exit strategy carries risks both for his presidential legacy and his party's political prospects as Republicans scramble to defend their narrow majorities in Congress ...

UK media (daily mail) reports nuclear powered submarine HMS Anson is taking up a position near the Strait of Hormuz

https://aje.news/ohi6b8?update=4424067

The UK is inevitably going to be dragged into this now Starmer has said UK bases can be for a 'limited' list of purposes that seems to expand every few days .

gzt: Trump gives ultimatum to Iran after getting bad reviews for his war aims success message - Open Hormuz now or I will destroy all power plants in the country starting with the capital city power plan

The classic New York Mafia thugs had more subtly than Trump.

spot the difference:

"It'd be a pity if you were to have an accident"

Versus "If Iran doesn’t FULLY OPEN, WITHOUT THREAT, the Strait of Hormuz, within 48 HOURS from this exact point in time, the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST"

Imo the way the Venezuela thing unfolded had an element of pure luck (and first time lucky) that none of the American military elements were killed or downed, and had the advantage that the settlement had been more or less negotiated already with Maduro before Trump decided to look tough and strong and abduct him into the bargain!

The whole Iran war has a massive element of risking other countries without risking your own.

It's America's allies in the Gulf countries that are taking the damage not America. The longer it goes on the harder it will be to recover. Already it's clear things will not be the same.

It may well move to America. I imagine a regime as fanatical as Iran's must have sleepers there eager to extract revenge.

You don't need sleeper cells anymore. You don't even need to focus on your like-minded.

N people and MAGA are happy to bomb and kill their own citizens and their own they don't see as radical enough.
Guns are the solution to everything type of people are just ripe for it and they have the equipment and skills.

I'm pretty sure the lessons from ISIS using countries own have not been unnoticed by IRGC.

I've thought similar thoughts, but hoped it would be just fantasy and movie plots, to be honest.

Anything like that would be entirely counter-productive. At the moment Trump is on the ropes and by extension his stupid and politically inconsistent military spending for attack on Iran. Any kind of domestic attack will only give those military campaigns more money and energy.

Trump and Netanyahu's recent coordinated 'success' 'success soon' announcements were surprisingly effective at calming the oil markets. Surprising because they are the least credible people on many metrics. Generally not effective for the stock markets maybe a little calming but you can't win 'em all.

Finally there has been some positive news with Trump backing away from the power plant attacks and saying that there are talks to end hostilities.

I'll believe it when it's done but at least it's a step in the right direction.

Yah. Trump says he's postponing power plant destruction for five days. Meanwhile the marines are on the way as usual. Slightly worse for wear if the toilets are not working but otherwise in transit.

Israel and USA are continuing the bombing and missilling as usual as far as anyone knows. I'm sure Iran will continue returning what they can.

Once again a great success calming the markets and talking the oil price down again. No real change foreseeable for the combatants and the millions who are already badly affected already by this continuing war and the problems yet to come.

I think it can't be long before the Arab powder keg explodes. I don't believe the surrounding, attacked countries will tolerate this much longer.

And Iran are denying there are such talks. It's rather frustrating that you cannot trust either party here to be reliable.

Best quality, best in the world, outstanding. I'd rather buy an apartment in Iran that's for sure ; ).
