This government is a train-wreck.

Enough said.

I think NZ is mirroring the worst of the USA

  • Tax cuts that mainly benefit the rich, mainly paid for by borrowing
  • Drill baby drill, extractive industries promoted at environmental cost
  • Mass destruction of the public service
  • Television ads for medicine
  • Pressure on reserve banks to cut official rates
  • Mass borrowing but not for infrastructure
  • Short term thinking, in cancelling whatever the "other side" did (i.e. ferries)

May be wrong but that is how I see it

Exactly right.

No pun intended.

Illustrated perfectly in this week's Secret Diary: https://newsroom.co.nz/2025/09/20/the-secret-diary-of-the-gdp-disaster/

Winston Peters

I was asleep at my desk but was wakened by a loud hollow noise. It was Shane Jones, saying that apparently there was a GDP disaster.

When he finished, I said, “How would you like to be deputy leader of New Zealand First?”

He said, “I’d like that.”

He left, and I went back to sleep.

Im curious about the mass destruction of the public service when there are more public servants now than when this government were elected.

I’m also curious how you would expect to maintain the number of public servants without borrowing? The reality is that to reduce the deficit would require mass cuts to the public service instead of reductions in pay rises etc.

Interestingly you haven’t discussed whether the significant increases in public services numbers during the previous government was actually effective in  better delivering public services.

So they haven't delivered on that promise either?

A Capital Gains tax is a really good way to combat this? Also they recently spent $671mil and got nothing for it so perhaps a finance minister who can actually manage the economy and not make stupid decisions while we're at it?

Almost half of New Zealanders say their financial situation has worsened in the past year as cost-of-living challenges bite for many, according to a new survey.

It comes as rising inflation and unemployment, along with economic uncertainty, continue to erode both household spending power and confidence. Recent data from fintech... Revolut found 42% of Kiwis said their financial situation has worsened over the past year. Meanwhile, more than half of respondents (54%) said they are finding it tough to manage their money.

Seriously, unless Luxon can pull a rabbit out of the hat and turn things around for the economy before next year's election, I would say that he's screwed.

If the election were held tomorrow, my bet is he would lose.

Unfortunately TPM have hit the death wobbles with Ferris & Tamahere's rants in the last couple of weeks. I 100% Toitu te Tiriti, but saying that non-Maori people should be forbidden from campaigning on behalf of their Maori friends/colleagues just because it is a Maori seat is deeply racist. At first I thought Ferris was just blowing off steam and saying a dumb thing he would immediately regret after what must have been a bad time for them with Kemp having passed away etc. but then he decided to double down and get agreement from Tamahere as well.

It's a pity; he speaks really well and I was previously impressed with his speeches etc during the debates before the last election.

TPM and the greens have done a bang up job of making the opposition look unelectable. Its been scandal after scandal

Labour hasn’t done anything at all. Once they start promoting policy it’s unlikely to get much better. Labour have still got the stink of not accomplishing the things they’d say they’d do while spending a fortune not to do it.

The profound lack of talent across the current parliament is disappointing to say the least.

Without wanting to get into a critique of each other's politics, this is something that we think about a lot in the party. How can anyone expect to have passionate, talented people who are truly representative of the diversity in the country stand up in the current climate? New Zealand, like Australia, is famous for hating its politicians and these days on top of that we have super polarisation creating an extra hateful toxic environment especially for people from marginalised communities who dare to stick their heads up.

I love my job, it's meaningful, even if it is ultimately in some sense for the benefit of a large corporation. But let's assume I considered running for parliament: why would I want to? I'm a straight white guy, not a brown refugee immigrant woman like Golriz Ghahraman who cracked under the strain of constant vile threats of violence, rape or death to herself and her family. But even I would have to wade through a constant stream of emails, phone calls and social media posts at best calling me a total w*nker because of xyz policy I stood for. The same would be true for you, just in the opposite sense.

Hardly anyone decent wants to stand for parliament, leading to a bunch of power-hungry idiots? We only have ourselves to blame.

I like this forum. We definitely disagree, and we aren't shy about it, but generally try to play the ball rather than the player. But that isn't true in the wider society, and it's a big part of why there is this profound lack of talent.

I don't really agree that this forum is plays the ball not the man. While we are civil to each other there is a heap of attacking people who disagrees motives and insinuating they are evil for having a different opinion. It's a polarised as any other place, just a little more civil. A heap of the posts in the political deplorable threads are just sneering at people who have a different view.

Well, speaking for myself if I come across that way sometimes I apologise. I’m not perfect but I try (sometimes?)

If you try sometimes you're doing better than me.

I saw a fairly funny novelty cup on a Facebook ad the other day. It was along the lines of

"Am I perfect?

No.

Am I trying to be a better person?

Also no."
