SaltyNZ:

Luxon government fails to do even the bare symbolic minimum

Luxon acknowledged some New Zealanders would be disappointed by the government's decision, but others would support it, and there were strongly held views on both sides of the debate.

Not to worry though, there are very fine people on both sides.

"Speaking on Herald Now on Monday, Seymour said the decision was made in a “careful and respectful way”, and praised the outcome as a “triumph for reason and logic” over what he called “rule by emotion and rule by the mob”.

Hey David, the "mob" is also known as the electorate.

Or how about this?

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/574427/kiwis-can-be-proud-nz-isn-t-recognising-palestine-yet-pm-christopher-luxon

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says New Zealanders can be "proud" of the government's decision not to recognise Palestinian statehood.

New Zealand was among only a handful of countries - including the US, Japan and South Korea - which had not formally recognised it.

I don't know why he would say this - as a Kiwi, I definitely don't feel anything remotely approaching "proud".

Also, 'bottom feeders' and 'dropkicks'. This government clearly despises everyone.

Luxon to Hipkins: please please please don't be like us and immediately undo everything we do.

But Hipkins doesn't believe offshore gas exploration isn't the answer to New Zealand's energy woes.

"It is not going to be an abundant and cheap form of energy for New Zealand in the future - we've got to get our heads around that," Hipkins said.

"We have other abundant and cheap energy available to us, we should be really ramping up our emphasise on that if we want to bring power prices down."

He said if the government can find someone to drill for gas, and they find gas, it would still be years before that gas came on stream.

"We have got a problem... that we need to address. But renewable energy... could solve those problems much quicker then hoping one day that we find more gas," Hipkins said.

Emphasis added. But this is the key point even if you think climate change is a hoax. Renewables can be online in a year, if you get right onto it and start deploying on all the sites that already have consents. Oil or gas won't be generating anything for a decade even if you find it tomorrow. I can't think of any sensible argument in favour of new oil and gas exploration: but I know for sure that it is neither the cause nor the solution for our current electricity supply issues.

EDIT: Luxon made the letter public before Hipkins even had a chance to read it.

It's a weird mentalaty of renewables taking away jobs, money from the ecomony etc.

The same people think that putting solar on your house and using the energy generated from that to charge an EV is somehow a scam.

bipartisanship must be more than a political slogan," Luxon wrote to Hipkins on Monday.

Letter sent to the media at the same time it was sent to Hipkins. It looks exactly like a empty political stunt.

Given the oil and gas subsidy thing was an NZ First policy in the first place this looks like an ill-conceived and desperate stunt to distract from the out of step announcement on Palestine and an underpowered economy.

Mmm, yeah, I sent our fearless leader an email last night to let him know exactly how proud I was that New Zealand exercised its independence to not recognise a Palestinian state.

It is so weird--when I read this article - Why China is becoming the world’s first electrostate ---

Caroline Wang points out that this green era has also brought major economic benefits. ---- “It drove 10 per cent of their GDP last year — just the one industry, clean energy. It’s overtaken real estate, and that says a lot because real estate was the driving force of their economy until a few years ago. But now it’s been overtaken by clean energy,” she said.

This country'll never get anywhere if it keeps on electing business leaders to run the place. The can't think past the next earnings statement (or whatever the government equivalent is called). Where's the 10 and 20 years plans, where's the industrial strategy (remember industry?).

Course maybe they do exist and I'm just demonstrating my ignorance, but they do seem to be well hidden.

Former top NZ diplomat at the UN, Colin Keating says Luxon's decision is out of step with our partners UK, Australia, Canada and will reduce NZ's reputation in growing middle-east markets.

Its all built around the election cycle.

1st year tell everyone it was the oppositions fault, so they have to "fix it"

2nd year don't do anything drastic, but still blame the opposition

3rd year tell everyone how many things you fixed, how everyone is now better off and the opposition would have sold you all down the river

rinse and repeat.

I saw this headline from RNZ this morning and thought "Ooooh I wonder how far into the announcement I will have to read to find out everything is the previous government's fault?" The answer surprised me; it's like 85% of the way through!

"Much of this is concluded to be a direct result of decisions made by the last Labour Government, including its ban on offshore exploration and its 100 percent renewable target, which scared off investment and left us dangerously short of reliable backup generation.

"Because of Labour's policies, households and businesses have been paying the price. This is clearly unacceptable, and we cannot put our heads in the sand and hope for rain every year."

But we can put our heads in the sand and insist that if, against the odds, anyone finds any new gas, then there being new gas coming on stream in 2035 will definitely lower power prices today.

Luxon's argument that recognizing the Palestinian state provides legitimacy to Hamas and prolongs the war is completely out of step with reality. NZ already recognizes the Palestinian Authority as a legitimate body and the Palestinian Authority recognizes Israel - It's pretty obvious to anyone with a brain that Hamas is not a part of that. The government decision will cost the Peters party some support and even give a few ACT voters some pause for thought.
