I usually would say Hanlon's Razor apply ("Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.") but in this case I'm not sure it is malicious anyway.

SaltyNZ: Luxon government fails to do even the bare symbolic minimum[on Palestine]

freitasm: What a weak Prime Minister we have.

Starting at 4:43> (May 2025) Mike Hosking: "How do senior bureaucrats not understand they are working for a government which has spoken very clearly on the maorification of this country?"

At that point in the conversation any of the last ten prime ministers of NZ would have responded with something like "don't be ridiculous!". Instead, Luxon gets all flustered and apologetic and manages to say "Well where we see it we call it out"

The same thing happened in coalition negotiations imo. Just as Hosking got a lot more than he expected so did ACT, and so will NZ First with unparalleled success in causing removal of Waitangi from legislation.

I seriously think this is going to be a one-term government. As I said on the other page, unless Luxon and co manage to pull some rabbit out of the hat and the economy starts to turn around, I think - at this point, anyway - his re-election prospects are looking very shaky.

Newsroom commentary says Luxon's Finance Minister Nicola Willis today officially asked power companies to build more generation:

https://newsroom.co.nz/2025/10/02/govt-flails-to-coax-gentailers-to-build-power-plants/

The energy minister isn't mentioned for some reason.

We will have to see how big of a lolly scramble both parties are going to have leading up to elections next year.

National have done almost nothing to deserve to be back in, but a labour/greens/tpm Govt scares the crap out of me, greens with their tax, borrow and spend agenda, tpm with their race based agenda.

@sen8or borrowing to actually build is not as bad as giving tax breaks to large companies with nothing in return.

Care to explain what is the race-based agenda you mention?

TPM have been very clear about advancing "their people". I can only surmise from that position that policies will favour one race over others.

Don't "large companies" employ a significant volumes of people and produce a lot of the economic activity in NZ?

The Govt actually removed some of the claimable expenses for businesses (depreciation on commercial buildings) an estimated additional $ 2.3bio of tax over 24/25-27/28 https://www.deloitte.com/nz/en/services/tax/perspectives/april-2024-bye-bye-building-depreciation-the-consequences.html) so "tax breaks" and nothing in return is very open to interpretation.

Try repositioning your view, put yourself in their shoes and think like this "We have hundreds of thousands of people who are disadvantage due to long term systemic discrimination. These policies blocked access to health, education and other social benefits that all others have, so we want their needs to be met."

Now, it sounds different from "These people with a different skin colour are in a fight against us!"

It's different, right?

It might sound different, certainly, but the end result is still the same isn't it?

If someone of one race is disadvantaged (through whatever cause), shouldn't they get the same support as someone from a different race who is disadvantaged, support based on need?

This argument implies that giving one group better conditions to bring them to an equal level automatically disadvantage a different, previously dominant group, even if no other rights were removed from the dominant group.

That mindset just extends the systemic discrimination by blocking progress to everyone, perpetuating the benefits one group enjoys without extending it to others.

And they do. Simply being Maori (or Pasifika) is a very reliable indicator that you are likely to be over-represented on all the bad stuff, and under-represented on the good stuff. It isn't racist or sexist or anything-ist to use such a characteristic as an indicator when there is a massive body of evidence supporting that as being a reliable indicator. We aren't doing phrenology here, the statistics are very clear.

The Treaty of Waitangi clearly intends to "avert the evil consequences which must result from the absence of the necessary Laws and Institutions alike to the native population and to Her subjects" and it is clear that didn't happen.

The Treaty of Waitangi does not mention 'race'. The ACT party like to claim that the Treaty of Waitangi is simply about property rights. That claim does not stand up to any examination.

For example freedom of speech is not mentioned in the Magna Carta and yet institutions over a period of nearly 1000 years have found the Magna Carta protects many things including the freedom of speech that ACT now claims to hold dear.

Borrowing to not build is what happened last time Labour and the Greens were in power. It’s probably what would happen again.

For the 18- and 19-year-olds already out of school, he [Luxon] said: “I’m sorry, we’re not paying your benefit … That’s your parents’ responsibility … You’ve got to get off the couch, stop playing PlayStation and go find a job.”

Right, and for the people who are not just "sitting on the couch playing PlayStation" and applying (and being rejected) for every job they apply to, what do you say to them? 🤷‍♂️
