FineWine:Trump tells voters to brave cold: ‘Even if you pass away, it’s worth it’

I saw a bumpersticker being sold. It's a variation of the "Punisher" skull. Note that cosplay expos, like the Armageddon expo in New Zealand, have banned wearing this after the Christchurch mosque shootings.

It's used by white supremacists, militias, and even some law enforcement units.

It's a symbol of vigilantism and violence: The Punisher is a fictional character from Marvel Comics who is known for his extreme methods of fighting crime, often resorting to lethal force. The logo has been embraced by some individuals who identify with a vigilante or "take the law into their own hands" mentality, promoting violence as a solution to societal issues. This association raises concerns about the glorification of violence and the disregard for due process.

The Punisher's logo has appeared on merchandise, uniforms, and equipment used by some law enforcement officers and military personnel. This adoption of the symbol has drawn criticism, as it blurs the line between fiction and reality, and raises concerns about the perception of law enforcement agencies aligning themselves with a character who often operates outside the boundaries of the law.

SJB:

According to the pundits on the BBC this morning who were all Americans and included a Republican, a Democrat and an independent it's all over bar the shouting.

Trump will win the nomination by a country mile and the other candidates will drop out after the next primary in New Hampshire making the other primaries irrelevant and the presidential election campaigning will begin.

De Santis is a dead man walking and Haley has no way to reduce Trumps lead.

Part of me is saying "let's see what happens" but the other part of me is saying "you're probably right".

Would be nice if the Republican party could just move the hell on from Trump, but I guess they can't help themselves 🙄

They will move on when he dies.

As I've posted before there is nobody to replace him. He's an aberration.

His legacy is what I'm more worried about, look at the election denier movement he created. That didn't exist in 2012 or even 2016 (for example).

Exhibit A :

The NY Times - Trump Has Made Claims About Caucus Fraud. What if He Underperforms?

14 Jan 2024

The last time Donald J. Trump participated in competitive Iowa caucuses, he lost narrowly, accused Senator Ted Cruz of Texas of stealing the contest, claimed fraud, demanded that Iowa Republicans nullify the results, and called for a rerun.

While Iowa has a history of troubles with its caucus results, there’s been no evidence of fraud. The 2016 Republican contest was, in fact, the only one since 2008 that had gone off without a hitch.

And yet if Monday night ends with Mr. Trump underperforming expectations, both his history and his rhetoric during this year’s campaign suggest he won’t hesitate to cry foul and refuse to accept the result.

American idiom: "Political hay"

One political candidate (Donald "grab 'em by the pussy" Trump) embarrassing their competitor (Georgia prosecutor).

‘Hay’ is used in the sense of something unimportant that is now being elevated for reasons of bad publicity.

It isn’t necessarily false news but a promotion of a small matter into a big factor.

Wall Street Journal: Fani Willis, Prosecutor in Trump Georgia Case, Subpoenaed to Testify in Colleague’s Divorce

Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis has been subpoenaed to testify in a colleague’s divorce proceeding, according to a court filing, a development that could shed light on claims Willis and the colleague carried out an improper romantic relationship as they prosecuted former President Donald Trump and others.

Iowa overall demographics (all Iowans )
  • White: ~88%
  • Two or more races:~ 4%
  • Black or African American: ~4%
  • Asian: ~3%
Also over half of Iowa Republicans are 50 or older.

It's funny the reporters show more diversity than the entirety of the Republican's shown participating.

Personally, I'm liking Trump's progress. The more popular he becomes with the minority, the more determined will be the majority to defeat him.

I don't think you'll like how that plays out. Trump will get the nomination, and has a very real chance of beating Biden in the general election. Biden was a weak candidate in 2020, and he's only gotten less popular since then.

The Democrats have been relying on the same terrible strategy for the past 8 years, thinking that people will vote for any candidate they put up just because it's a vote against Trump. It failed in 2016, was far closer than it should have been in 2020, and I predict will fail again this year. Without a strong Democratic candidate for people to vote FOR we'll be watching Trump get inaugurated again come January 2025.

While I think Trump will get the nomination, remember the hardcore MAGA crowd don't make up all of the electorate - not even close.

Let's see what happens though. I agree the Democrats could do better than Biden, but he won the nomination fair and square in 2020, so he has a slight advantage as the incumbent.

Of course, if America is stupid enough to vote Trump in again, well, they get what they deserve, really. He's not even half the saviour they think he is. He's in it for one person, himself.

https://www.newsweek.com/winner-iowa-caucuses-will-who-cares-opinion-1860417

And the Winner of the Iowa Caucuses Will Be... Who Cares?

"Throughout this century, winning Iowa has actually been a pretty poor predictor of winning a major party nomination for president, and it's gotten worse as the century has marched balefully on. That is primarily because caucuses attract a different crowd that is not necessarily representative of the general electorate. Whatever you might think of debating your neighbors for several hours about the most appropriate presidential nominee for your party, it is not a practice that is particularly inclusive or designed for people who don't pay close attention to politics."

Worth a read...

Iowa Caucus Results

With less than 1% of the votes counted, The Associated Press have already called the race!   😶

Also: https://www.politico.com/2024-election/results/

Bit quick by AP, they're normally pretty good but maybe they've already analysed the results so far.

Surprised to see Christie, etc still in this list - I thought they had dropped out?

Also curious to see who takes second place; will all De Santis's efforts be worth it, or will Haley best him?

Historically the incumbent has the advantage, but anything involving Trump rarely plays out how it "should".

Republicans will vote Republican, Democrats will vote Democrat. Right or wrong, for most of the voter base it doesn't make any difference who the candidate is. US elections are won or lost on two things: voter turnout, and swing votes.

  1. Voter turnout will probably balance out. Trump supporters will get out and vote for him, Trump haters will get out and vote against him. I don't see anyone going out of their way to vote either for or against Biden because he doesn't inspire enough enthusiasm either way.
  2. Swing voters. I think Trump has the advantage here. People have a short memory. Trump was an unpopular president 4 years ago, but Biden is an unpopular president right now.

Of course Trump is no savior, and he's in it purely for his ego - but too many people either don't see it, or don't care. Either way it would appear to have little impact on his popularity.
