@sen8or borrowing to actually build is not as bad as giving tax breaks to large companies with nothing in return.

Borrowing to not build is what happened last time Labour and the Greens were in power. It’s probably what would happen again.

Yeah, like, now. Where this government have borrowed more than the previous government to not build while also giving tax cuts to landlords.

Some people have laid the blame on the RBNZ for not cutting the cash rate fast enough. But let’s not forget that the Government changed the bank’s mandate to a sole focus on inflation.

That means it has to keep worrying about inflation (even though most of the rising prices relate to tradeable items outside its control), and it isn’t supposed to consider what’s happening to employment.

The ideological policy move has turned out to be quite a substantial own goal for the Government (perhaps second only to the money that was wasted on tax cuts for which they’ll get no credit at the polls next year).

I must admit I hadn't thought of this. While the tax cuts probably did give National a short-term bump in the polls, I reckon that by next year most voters will have long forgotten, and will vote with how their wallets are doing then.

@quickymart the National today isn’t what people voted for in the past IMHO. But many people (like my parents) will just vote for who they always have without looking at performance or policies thinking if they vote for anything else they’ll pay more in taxes.

And in other news good ole Tim Costly in Kapiti is still wasting taxpayer money by putting full page adverts in our community papers, putting billboards up and doing leaflet drops in mailboxes - this man must love seeing his face.

Not John Key's National government by any means.

Imo it's unlikely National gained much from that tax cut exercise. National promised $250 per fortnight and added a lot of fine print. In the fine print most of it was in the form of tax credit for childcare. Everyone knows Labour is very unlikely to change a childcare subsidy.

SaltyNZ: Not John Key's National government by any means.

I think it's fair to say with John Key government recognition of Palestine at the UN in 2012..

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/122223/nz-supports-un-status-for-palestine

... in 2025 it would have been natural for a Key government to recognize a Palestinian state now that UK, Australia, Canada and many of our partners have. Luxon's argument against recognition make no sense, mainly because it's the words of David Seymour.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/575025/jobseeker-parents-earning-more-than-65k-must-support-18-19yo-children

Parents earning more than $65,000 must support their 18-19-year-old children, with the government tightening eligibility for Jobseeker benefits.

From November 2026, there will be a parental assistance test for jobseekers and equivalent emergency benefits, with the government saying parents who can support their children should do so, instead of the state.

I didn't know people earning that much were considered rich now, I must have missed that meeting 🙄

Where was it claimed that people earning over $65k were rich?

Not in the announcement but that's my interpretation of it.

It's a strange interpretation. The point of this policy seems to be to make it far less attractive for young people to go on a benefit while using family pressure as an added incentive to get work.

Whether or not you agree with the policy is a different story.

My point is $65k isn't quite in the "well-off" category like it used to be, I guess. I had a relative who had to rely on this recently as his parents couldn't afford to support him with the current cost-of-living pressures, and they made over this threshold (although admittedly not by much). That backstop is gone now.

The policy isn’t designed to only apply to people who are well off. It’s meant to apply to as many people as possible.

Just as well considering the recession and how it disproportionately hits the unemployment rate for young people.

It's a policy that does not help people in need, really.

But we already know National is not in the business of helping.

It’s designed to force people in to work. Whether or not it works we will see.
