Tinkerisk: OT: The hammer of a revolver must not be cocked. Then it is at least secured against unintentional operation and dropping. My pistol has three safeties, none of which I have to activate separately or can forget to activate when I need to use it. I could even throw it to you cocked and loaded without it going off.

But you're European :) Double action revolvers are common in the US, and almost everyone carries either completely empty or fully loaded in the US.

It would be very unusual to leave a single chamber empty.

The holster is supposed to keep it safe, by protecting (hiding) the trigger.

Interesting. I remember being quite keen on guns myself when I was about six.

There's some much news about Trump's lawyers being
  • unpaid
  • being disciplined (up to disbarment)
  • or both
that I lose track of what's been posted on Geekzone or not.

I'm getting serious deja vu on this story, so forgive me if it's a repeat.

Politico: DC bar authorities file disciplinary charges against pro-Trump 2020 election lawyers

Washington, D.C., bar investigators have filed disciplinary charges against three lawyers who aided Donald Trump ally Sidney Powell’s campaign to mount discredited legal challenges to the 2020 election results.

Filings made public Friday accused attorneys Juli Haller, Lawrence Joseph and Brandon Johnson of making knowingly false representations to courts about a slew of lawsuits they filed in the weeks after the 2020 election.

Politico - Polls Show Trump Could Be Doomed If He’s Convicted. Will a Trial Happen in Time?

22 Jan 2024  (short extracts only - the full article is well worth reading)

Nearly a third of Republican caucusgoers told pollsters that Trump would not be “fit” for the presidency if he is convicted of a crime - a sizable defection that, if it held, would likely doom Trump’s general election chances. ...

But what is clear is that some lingering courtroom questions are now essential electoral questions as well: When will Trump’s myriad trials take place? And can any jury deliver a verdict before this November? ...

Among All Trump’s Trials, the Jan. 6 Case Is Key

For both political and legal reasons, the most important case is the Justice Department’s prosecution over Trump’s effort to overturn the 2020 election. ...

The Supreme Court Could Fuel Delays

If the Supreme Court ends up taking the appeal, it is unclear how long the justices would take to resolve the issue. ..

The Convention and Campaign Could Also Affect the Trial Date

The setting of trial dates in federal courts is governed by a statute called the Speedy Trial Act, which requires judges to determine whether any pretrial delay would serve “the ends of justice” and “outweigh the best interest of the public and the defendant in a speedy trial.” ...

What About Justice Department Rules Against Playing Politics?

The department has an unwritten, “60-day rule” where prosecutors traditionally avoid taking major steps in criminal cases that could affect an election in the two-month period leading up to Election Day. ...

Trump’s Endgame Is to Postpone the Trial Past the Election

Trump’s reelection campaign has always been driven in large part by his desire to avoid serious legal repercussions from these cases ... It’s a pioneering use of political campaign as legal strategy. ...

But there is a very real and substantial possibility - arguably more likely than not - that Trump will stand trial in Washington before the general election. If that happens, he will probably be convicted, and we will then find out in earnest what the actual political consequences are for Trump’s reelection effort.

The NY Times -  America’s Political Gerontocracy

19 Jan 2024

The United States has one of the youngest populations, yet it is represented by the oldest lawmakers ...

To be fair, most countries have lawmakers who are older than their populations (about seven years older, on average).

But the U.S. is in a class of its own.

Trump is screwed.

It all comes down to the upcoming judgement against Trump from the New York fraud case, Letitia James attorney general.

He has already been found liable (there's no "guilty" in civil cases. Liable = guilty)

Letitia James let slip that Trump is cash poor.. He may be worth billions (or not), but it's on paper, not in cash.

In New York, like other states, you can appeal a civil verdict BUT you have to lodge a bond in the amount of the case.

So Trump will be posting a bond, in cash, for the full amount of the reward.

If the judge Trump has been pissing off is feeling generous it may be "only" 200 million. I'd bet it exceeds $370 million.

No cash, no bond, no appeal.

Just ask Giuliani who's in the same boat, because Georgia has a similar law.

Only came out last month so it's quite recent and fairly up-to-date with his court cases, etc.

RawStory: 'Cash crunch': Trump may be forced to endure something worse than selling his assets
...
Trump being forced to sell his assets could be even more undignified because there has been a financial monitor appointed to handle the Trump Organization finances from the point at which fraud was determined.

The monitor may seize the assets to sell them off in a kind of fire-sale.

But I thought he was a billionaire? That would(n't) explain the constant need for endless donations for his campaign/legal fund/Diet Coke/whatever?

Found a couple of interesting (and highly amusing) extracts from my current read - also found a better review here:

https://www.theguardian.com/books/2023/nov/07/trump-trial-date-todd-blanche-jonathan-karl-book

This amusing passage describes Trump's losing, despite him constantly telling Americans they would get "tired of winning":

This defiance was even more embarrassing for Trump in Arizona. Sitting at his desk on December 1, 2020, Republican governor Doug Ducey was set to sign paperwork certifying his state’s election results—on live TV—when “Hail to the Chief” began to play. It was his cell phone, blaring the personalized ringtone he had set for calls from Trump. With the cameras rolling, Ducey took the phone out of his pocket, sent the call to voicemail, and certified Trump’s loss in Arizona.

EDIT: updated results, with >95% of votes counted

The NY Times - New Hampshire Primary - Trump Defeats Haley, Fueling His Drive Toward G.O.P. Nomination

breaking

The former president’s win raises questions about Nikki Haley’s path, but she vowed to stay in the race.

Ms. Haley used what was nominally a concession speech to deliver some of the sharpest attacks she has made on one of the largest platforms she has had against Mr. Trump.

She blamed him for Republican losses in elections dating to 2018, warned of him of having a “senior moment” and said that she would defeat President Biden while Mr. Trump would lose and usher in a second term for the president and Vice President Kamala Harris.

“You can’t fix the mess if you don’t win an election,” she said. “A Trump nomination is a Biden win and a Kamala Harris presidency.”

Trump was right, I'm tired of winning.

His winning, that is. I'm also tired of his losing, tired of his minor and major losses, his imaginary triumphs. I'm  tired of his rants and rages, his mealy-mouthed mutterings, his needy pleadings, his whiny chants.

I'm tired of seeing his ugly, bloated, orange face, his ridiculously comb-overed, died hair. I'm tired of looking into his mean, piggy eyes, watching his thin, spit-flecked, floppy lips deliver yet another childish inanity.

I'm tired of his loud-mouthed lectures, with head cocked on one side and tiny hands waving in and out, like a palsied concertina player. I'm tired of hearing his voice and his constant wheedling demands for attention.

I'm totally tired of Trump, but Nikki Haley's correct: He won't be a problem for too much longer.

A Fascist, a Racist, a Rapist and a Demented Sociopath walk into a bar. The bartender says : What will it be, Mr. Trump?

Note that Donald Trump is supposedly a non-drinker -  his older brother drank himself to death 40 years ago.

From a doctor (psychiatrist are allowed to prescribe drugs): Trump Nose Best – Adderall Use is Nothing to Sniff At

His son Don Jr also seems to have a coke problem, and it ain't the diet Coke variety....
