BBC News - Ex-Congressman George Santos spotted at New Hampshire Trump party

Disgraced ex-congressman George Santos made an unexpected appearance at Donald Trump's official election watch party. ...

So, in what may be a US election first, it appears that the court and DoJ have allowed someone facing fraud and conspiracy charges to attend an event for another man facing federal conspiracy charges.

Before that Trump looked untouchable. That result 45% of the vote is a spectacular win for Haley. I'd be surprised if there were not some celebrations after that.

Best case scenario:
  • Haley pulls out of Republican primary
  • Starts third party
  • Splits Republican vote
  • Trump becomes so broke from multiple civil suits that he joins a county fair as a professional dunking tank sitter.
It could happen. See story from Minnesota County Fair Bans Dunk Tanks After Political In-Fighting

From early on, I heard NH was the best state for N.H. to win.

The result is much as expected from my perspective. Trump has the simple majority ie is currently untouchable.

CNN, for example, were predicting Trump 50, Haley 40, DeSantis 6% before the latter withdrew. Maybe his supporters were more not-trump than expected by CNN and others. Anyway, mopping up two-thirds of the 9% other votes is hardly a spectacular win for Haley

Trump challenges Nikki Haley to an aptitude test:

The Hill
: "Well, I think I’m a lot sharper than her. I would do this: I would sit down right now and take an aptitude test and it would be my result against her result, and she’s not going to win, not gonna even come close to winning," he said in the interview.

..but the test Trump took was a mental competency test.

By Robert S. Becker:

Atrocious breaches cry for relief—
Sluggish delays beggar belief.
Mob bosses who shun convictions
Only foment more derelictions.

The “public crook” above the law
Unearths the worst systemic flaw;
When justice can’t incarcerate,
What outlaws will it intimidate?

No felon better plays the system,
Spewing boomerang resistance;
No mayhem counts as too bizarre—
“Next time, let’s sue in Zanzibar?”

Mud-wrestling fits Trump’s forté,
Injustice thrives in forced delay.
His tomfoolery evasion
Brews the sleazy with the brazen!

And hustles must be transparent—
Trump stunts are never aberrant.
Posing as MAGA street brawler,
The joke—it’s all ‘bout the dollar.

He grimaces the phoniest sneers.
The fraudster showing zero fears;
At prosecutors he snubs his thumb,
Proof positive he’s the dumb one.

If not age, gaffes plague this codger,
No charm saves this artless dodger.
The finale when courts convict
Answers to the sentencing script.

Upon my word, committing crimes
Comes faster than all merited fines;
When scorn for law jibes with breathing—
No mean feat to crush endless thieving.

The Washington Post - Opinion - The big winner of the 2024 GOP primaries was the ‘big lie’

24 Jan 2024

Among Republicans, the lie has won.

When Donald Trump insisted against all evidence that he had won the 2020 election in a “landslide,” it was not merely a psychological defense against the fact of his defeat.

It was a canny, though reckless, political tactic. It preserved his political viability in the Republican Party and kept him from smelling like a loser.

Republicans never had the normal discussion of what they, and their candidate, did wrong in their failed campaign: a discussion that would have had to dwell on Trump’s character flaws and the general public’s reaction to them. ...

The result: The primaries are effectively over, and the general election won’t be over fast enough.

What are the elements of Trump’s big lie?

1. The election was stolen because it’s not possible Trump didn’t win.

2. There was a massive technological conspiracy to rig the election.

3. Theories and wild claims pushed on the internet find their way into lawsuits and are then pushed by Trump.

4. Trump supporters questioning the results are just being good citizens.

Trump is slaughtering her in the national polls. She has been steadily trending upwards, but I think the gap is probably just too big for her to ever catch up.

Part of me wonders how many Republicans actually think there will be another one term presidency this time around. Single term presidencies aren't that common. There's only ever been one time before where there's been two in a row.

Some of the commentary I've read says;

  • While Trump has won the primaries on paper so far, the turn out has been lower than last time. Republican voters are staying away from the polls.
  • There's a reasonable (perhaps substantial) number of Republicans who won't vote for Trump come time of the Presidential Election. They might be happy for him to be the Republican candidate but not the president.

Is a tranche of Republican's holding back in the primary elections?

  • History shows that a single term presidency is unlikely so their choice of candidate is relatively unimportant.
  • Trump is doing his utmost to barge (bully) his way into being the Republican candidate so why waste effort on fighting him.
  • They'd be happy to see him fight and lose the election, then hopefully see the end of him for good. A risky strategy perhaps.

It seems to me that Trump's main voter base is to the right. A group that are not likely to vote Democrat. The fight is for the middle ground, just like here.

I wonder that come November, presuming Trump is still eligible to stand, he will lose to Biden by more than last time.

Background: Martin Shkreli famously raised a drug from $13.50 a tablet to $750 overnight, because it's "whatever the market can bear".

I wonder how many Trump supporters even care, as Shkreli was just doing what pharmacy shareholders demand.

Shkreli went to jail on two counts of securities fraud and one count of conspiracy. Tragically he was not punished for raising the drug price.

MSNBC : How Martin Shkreli's pharma industry ban supports a Trump real estate ban

While we await Judge Arthur Engoron’s decision in Donald Trump’s civil fraud case, another shady businessman made a cameo on the Trump docket: Martin Shkreli.

New York Attorney General Letitia James invoked the “Pharma Bro” after a federal appeals court Tuesday upheld a trial court’s order banning Shkreli from the pharmaceutical industry for life. That’s relevant to Trump’s case because Engoron is considering James’ request that the former president be permanently banned from New York real estate. The attorney general wants that same treatment for former Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg and former Controller Jeffrey McConney, plus five-year bans for Trump’s adult sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr.

The Shkreli decision could bolster James’ effort against Trump and his civil co-defendants, giving Engoron more precedent to impose such a strong penalty. James is also seeking $370 million in the case that threatens the foundations of Trump's business empire. We’ll see if and how Shkreli’s ban plays a role in Engoron’s forthcoming ruling.

A question that has been niggling at me: Say Biden does win the general election. Maybe not by a huge margin, but enough to be convincing.

If Trump and his supporters still don't accept that Biden won the last time, why does anyone think they will accept it next time? What happens when they don't? Are the authorities preparing for mass civil unrest or don't they think that will happen for some reason? Will there be another coup attempt? Civil war? Will the military take sides?

With Trump so far ahead in the polls his supporters might not be out in droves to vote in the primaries because it's a forgone conclusion he'll get the nomination regardless of their vote.

I wouldn't count on the historical rarity of single term presidencies as any sort of predictor. Almost everything about Trump's political career has been historically unprecedented.

From the American local police to the FBI, white right-wing extremists have been treated ... hmm ... with more moral flexibility than white left-wing extremist. If you have brown skin, you don't even have to be an extremist.

But American law enforcement attitudes, while changing at a glacial pace, are changing.

See Mark and Patricia McCloskey as an example, two Florida lawyers waving guns at a peaceful marchers.

However they did speak, via video at the Republican National Conference, saying they had no regrets, and would do it again if given the chance.

Here's Trump response.

While Trump mentioned the many ways pointing an assault rife at protestors passing nearby, he did exclude the McCloskey also prevented several possibilities
  • prevented cows fornicating with small kitchen appliances

  • they kept the ground between their feet being split asunder

  • if the McCloskey did not overeact with threats of flying lead, women worldwide would stop shaving their armpits
