Just as well considering the recession and how it disproportionately hits the unemployment rate for young people.

Explored more here: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/575040/jobseeker-changes-punished-for-economic-crisis-they-didn-t-create

Ricardo Menéndez March: "Christopher Luxon needs to get out more and realise that families earning $65,000 a year, they will be feeling the pinch. It's simply not feasible to have a young adult in a household earning $65,000 that is unable to receive income support at a time of high unemployment and huge job cuts that have been led by this government."

Menéndez March said there were simply not enough jobs for young people seeking employment.

This is the point I was trying to make.

But we already know National is not in the business of helping.

Except for wealthy landlords or cigarette companies 😠

It’s designed to force people in to work. Whether or not it works we will see.

There aren't any jobs for them. My son has been looking to get out of the branch of McDonalds he currently works at because all signs point to it going rapidly downhill but there just isn't anything available. Certainly not for someone who is in full time study.

I think its an ill thought out policy at best, saving a few million is hardly going to turn around the fortunes of the country. We can't save ourselves to a fortune.

My son had equally a hard time getting out of his supermarket role and was fortunate a part time / casual role at my wife's work was made permanent / full time once they realised the added value he brought, but he spent a year or more applying for roles with barely even a "thanks but no thanks" response from most.

How do you suppose that'll work with no jobs available in the first place?

Case in point - our local Noel Leeming had a sales position open up and had to close applications after in one day they had over 2000 of them. For many people finding a job is like winning the lottery.

You can't force people into employment when there are no jobs to begin with...

Looking at the comments above, if things carry on the way they are currently by the time this change comes into effect it's not going to go well.

Good* piece on the economy here:

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/575077/opinion-nicola-willis-is-right-the-economy-isn-t-as-bad-as-the-merchants-of-misery-claim

*As in aligns with my thoughts :D

Hmmm, well ...

The government has moved to address some of this with regulatory reviews, a housing construction growth programme and resource management reform.

Not sure any of those are really something to crow about. The regulatory reviews have so far produced nothing much beyond a press release from Nicola Willis complaining about the company that owns all the shops at the airports (certainly an issue the homeless community care deeply about, even if the rest of us don't). Although I (surprisingly) find myself agreeing with Chris Bishop on housing policy, he isn't in charge - the old white landlords who vote National are, and they aren't voting for house prices to go down. But that's OK since the tradies are all fleeing to Australia anyway. And we all agree the RMA is rubbish ... but unless you have at least an 8-figure net worth you won't be able to afford the lawyers that make living in David Seymour's Libertarian Maximalist Utopia bearable.

So the government won't support 18/19 year olds with a bit of income but it still expects 18/19 year olds to support them when it comes to money (tax) flowing in the opposite direction.

The counterpoint to the good piece on the economy written by that one economist is the open letter to Nicola Willis written by 20 economists.

It's tough love, don't you know? That seems to be the only kind of love National governments - most especially this one - know about.

ODT pulling no punches on the Luxon government's energy plans.

This plan, if we could call it that, was not helped by Mr Luxon writing a plaintive letter to Labour leader Chris Hipkins asking him to commit to supporting offshore exploration for natural gas for at least the next 10 years in an effort to achieve a "credible, bipartisan approach".

...

It looked silly and desperate. The government’s enthusiasm for bipartisanism seemed even more questionable when it was revealed Labour’s energy spokeswoman Megan Woods had written to Mr Watts weeks earlier on the issues; something he took 37 days to reply to. They have yet to meet.

...

Mr Luxon constantly banging on about Labour’s ban on oil and gas exploration needs to stop. He knows Labour’s ban did not prevent existing exploration permits from continuing, that it has been years since any significant discovery, and even if more gas were found it would take well over a decade for it to be available.
