I am a bit behind, but saw a Stuff alert, Peters says a disgusting coward smashed his home

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/winston-peters-calls-out-violent-hate-filled-alleged-window-attack-on-his-home/SZ5KLANLAFAHNA7B24KD2VSXSQ/

While I don't like Winston Peters - and certainly don't condone anyone smashing anyone's windows, even if they just disagree with them - what he said here concerns me:

Peters said it was the “type of violent hate-filled behaviour we warned about in the past few days about the radical left”, although at this stage it’s unclear who is responsible.

Once again, we have a mouthy politician pointing the finger at a group (on the other side) with no evidence whatsoever but immediately proclaiming them as the guilty party. Doesn't that remind you of someone?

Hell, for all we know, this was an ACT party supporter who just didn't like NZ First's policies (or even Winston himself) - and I'm pretty sure ACT aren't left-wing!

Is that the smasher or the smashee ??? :-)

Methinks both apply

Gross.

The only reasonable response here is that smashing someones window is wrong.

100%. Boo him all you want - he deserves it - but your right to protest stops at standing in annoying places and being obnoxious. There is no right to go damaging people's homes.

Smashing Peters' window is not helpful to the cause of protest imo:

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/575138/disgusting-coward-winston-peters-says-window-smashed-at-his-home-police-called

The window smashing apparently occurred some time after Peters' address location was provided in an Instagram live stream. More likely to be some semi-random person than someone associated with the protest imo.

Yup. Protest is a right and needs to be protected. I think it's pretty unnecessary that the protests are outside his house but it's legal.

The problems start when it gets violent and this is just wrong.

A couple of developments today - the guy who smashed the window has turned himself in to Police. Also, an actress (who has appeared in Vodafone/One adverts) livestreamed Winston's address during a recent protest outside his place. She is going to be removed from their advertising.

Que the protests about the protestors being punished for protesting.....

If people want to protest about things, all well and good, but, as pointed out above, it ends at "peaceful". Should she be cancelled and her career as an actress be put in jeopardy? Probably not a consequence to her actions she envisaged, but commercial entities have a right to pick who represents their brand and with brand image being something many companies fiercely defend, I can understand the reasoning.

It’s designed to force people in to work. Whether or not it works we will see.

I think the policy is more likely a whistle to get supporters back from ACT and NZ first.

National know they need to do something , anything to increase their support before the next election in 13 months time.

Yes, kinda.  But the bit I don't like about the saga is a politician strongly hinting to One NZ to 'take another look at that'.  Fed by a very leading media question admittedly.

Personally I can distinguish between a person in their 'professional role' - appearing in a commercial, and what that person does in their 'private/personal time'.  I would not think less of One NZ just because they have this person in their advertising.

The ironic thing for me:

One of the primary concerns voiced about this whole issue s that the protesting has crossed a line by invading a politician's private home/space rather than protesting at a public space like Parliament.

In making this comment, the minister has crossed the line in the other direction.
Not just denouncing this person for their actions, but effectively interfering in that persons life outside of protesting.

The lines between personal and professional life seems to be becoming increasingly blurry, this I guess is one of the consequences of social media and the power it can wield.

Once the livestreamer was publicly known it was probably inevitable that the telco advertising was pulled without any politician involved. It just happens that became known via a media question to a politician. Likewise the series of events leading to that is unlikely to have occurred in the absence of the incident with Peters' front window.

Freedom of speech and freedom of protest isn’t freedom of consequences.

She did dox Winston and his house did get attacked. That isn’t something any company would want to be associated with.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/business/575264/the-longest-deepest-slowest-job-market-recruitment-agency

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has told young unemployed people to get off the couch, stop playing PlayStation, and go find a job because there are lots of them.

But 1st Call Recruitment general manager Angela Singleton told Checkpoint the prime minister was being optimistic about the realities of the job market in 2025.

She said the number of available jobs was about 50-70 percent down in a lot of sectors across the country, with "very limited" use of temporary labour at the moment.

"This is the worst we've seen in New Zealand since 2005."

A recruiter says that - despite Luxon's claim that there are "lots of jobs" going - the opposite is actually the case.

I'm becoming concerned about Luxon's lack of originality. Luxon seems to get his lines direct from NZ First, ACT and Hobson's Pledge.
