SJB:

I seem to remember that the UK didn't finish paying back it's WW2 debt to the US until something like the early 2000's. So much for 'special relationship'.

During WWII the UK had to pay for arms with gold, so the UKs gold ended up in the USA.

This created an issue where until then world trade was based on the GBP/Gold Standard.

In the 1950's to try and get world trade running again, the $US was chosen as it was the currency with the most gold backing it.

Again, nothing to do with the USA being great...just lucky

Watch a "Very british bomb" to see how "special relationships" work from the US perspective

Several commentators have claimed it was a unanimous decision.

CNN seems to be explaining the decision was "unsigned" rather than unanimous:

https://edition.cnn.com/2024/03/04/politics/takeaways-trump-scores-big-win-in-colorado-ballot-dispute/index.html

"CNN: To begin with, the court handed down what’s known as a “per curiam” opinion, a Latin term that translates to “by the court.” Such opinions are relatively rare and are sometimes used to signal consensus – even though they are not always unanimous."

Here I was thinking "per curiam" was latin for Life jacket.

The Washington Post - The 5-Minute Fix: 4 takeaways from SCOTUS letting Trump stay on ballots

1. States can’t decide; Congress must act

The ruling says that a state can’t disqualify a presidential candidate, in part because it doesn’t have that power and in part because having such power would lead to chaos.

2. No discussion of whether Trump actually ‘engaged in insurrection’

The ruling provides precisely zero clarity on the underlying issue of whether Trump actually engaged in insurrection - neither ruling that he did nor that he didn’t, or even engaging in discussion about it.

3. Four justices say the court went too far

The judgment is one thing; the scope of the ruling is another. Five justices went further than the full court by declaring that Congress must enforce the insurrection clause.

4. Where it leaves us

The fact that the justices wanted to maintain at least the appearance of unanimity is important. They will be taking up other divisive Trump-related issues, and they recognize the importance of at least looking as if they’re speaking with one voice. ...

The ruling also invites Trump to continue arguing that liberal activists have gone too far in trying to take him down in the courts.

I'm hoping Trump wins his immunity case as then Biden can order the CIA to assassinate him.

Yes I think that's a rather important loophole that the orange buffoon has overlooked with all his "immunity" logic.

I think it's fair to assume that Trump is only thinking in a "Not for thee, only for me" way, with regard to the immunity call.

I think if it came down to it, he'd likely order assassinations of many and any political opponents on his way to dictatorship, if he gets full and unquestioned immunity.
He'll be one of thoise paranoid egomaniacs that strikes first and damn the consequences - at which point the US becomes an insane asylum and heads into civil war.

So the Supreme Court believes in State's Rights when it comes to abortion, just not when it comes to presidents. Have I got that right?

Maybe something like this "logic"?

Pretty pathetic when you have to basically "photoshop in" black friends into a selfie.

Not the gibberish text on hat (AI knows wht text looks like, but not what text does), and hands with strange fingers (again AI knows what hand look like, but not how they're anatomical limits)

I guess Kayne West and Clarence Thomas were out celebrating Trump's supreme court victory.

It's Hillary Clinton that orders the assassinations, not Biden. Don't you watch Fox?

That image is actually quite fake, as Trump doesn't have a lazy eye (not that I've seen, anyway). His eyes seem to be going in opposite directions there.

Does anyone still believe in American Exceptionalism?

Sure, of the kind that needs an exception handler to deal with:

__try {

behave_sensibly();

} __except (americans)

Not to mention the fact Trumps' hands are on their shoulders...
