Sad news. I hope he will be remembered as a good Prime Minister (even by those that don't vote National).

He has some real sh*t to deal with during his time - 3 earthquakes, the GFC, Pike River off the top of my head.

Time to have some family time, and a nice private Christmas.

The election of a successor will be difficult -

Bill English, probably "qualified" for the job but has limited appeal outside of business circles.

Judith Collins - Previously stripped of her portfolio, now seems to be back in vogue, probably too polarising.

One from a little left field - Amy Adams. She has been a lot more "front and centre" with JK in press conferences etc and she seems to do a decent enough job of her portfolios, don't duck for cover and doesn't put up with crap. She may have broad enough appeal (and getting a woman elected to the job wouldn't hurt Nationals chances with female voters). She will be good to stand against Jacinta Ardern when she rolls Angry Andrew after the next labour defeat

I was thinking A few months ago, that if he was going to resign , now would be the time to do it, as it gives the new leader, most likely English, a lot of time to regroup the party for the election. The thing is that he needed to resign for a lot of changes to be made, as he did promise that things such as retirement age wouldn't be changed under his leadership. I guess those sorts of things are now open. Ther is also now a lot more pressure on him, over things like the property bubble and unaffordable house prices, th growing gap between the rich and working class etc. IMO he has done a valid job, and it is probably one of the worst and thankless jobs in NZ in a lot of ways. But also very rewarding too. But it was time to go because there are a lot of changes that need to be done, as the current system in NZ is not working. Housing is the number one problem in NZ, and it needs changes to the amount of immigrants we are letting in, stopping overseas people buying housing stock, creating competition in the building materials market to name but a few.

That's gobsmacking news.

I don't think there's any doubt that through assorted crises since he was elected, he's led an extremely stable government. They usually start to fall apart in the third term - he's held it together. Many examples elsewhere of liberal democracies with leadership issues which NZ evaded, especially post-GFC.

You probably can rationalise timing of the announcement to settle-in a new PM and candidate for election 2017, but I'd be very surprised if something else isn't behind his resignation. National will have a real job on their hands finding a replacement with Key's popular appeal. Bill E? Nah - I don't think so.

Being the end of a long hard year, it seems some people might be being a little over sensitive and or lost their sense of humor :)

They are very passive and go with the flow. That isn't always good though, as it means they can be very slow to adapt to changes which are needed. I however don't think NZ would have been any worse off under another party during this time, as NZ Is very stable politically.

I don't blame him. Who'd want to be in the public eye as much as someone like a PM all the time? The personal cost must be very high. How many of us could or would do the job?

I've had no real problems with him personally as PM since he took over from Helen.

I'd imagine he wouldn't have needed an ultimatum that strong. She could have just said "Hey, I am struggling, would you consider resigning" and he has.
