I grew up in a place where it's fully reported in the press, where it appears on TV in programs and so on. I don't know anyone who has done it or who has ever mentioned anyone they know doing it.

I really don't understand the delicacy with which the subject is treated here at all.

unfortunately i know 3 people have committed suicide, what we do just sweep under the carpet don't talk about it?

i think it been reported 500 people committed suicide last year which is higher than road toll ? road toll, water safety ,alcoholism/drug use . all get plenty of advertising , but suicide gets nothing ?

More importantly, why are these deaths happening?

NZ is a great place to grow up compared to many. There's little here that the vast majority of kids ought to find fault with to that extent.

Surely if there is something missing we should add it?

Sweeping it under the carpet is mad. It's like saying that if we stop reporting the road toll, cars will stop crashing.

What's missing most often is self esteem...

Kids are MEAN, especially teenagers, and often their only way of establishing their own self esteem is to denigrate others.
Setting up an 'us or them' enables them to form groups, but if you're not in anyone else' "Us" then you have no real peer validation. As '13 reasons' shows, even a vivacious good looking teen from a stable and 'good' home can really struggle to have a sense of worth/purpose without peer friendships to validate their identity and share their daily struggles.

Teenage-hood is the time in which we establish our sense of self, independence, and personal ID... and we need peers and mentors to validate our choices to establish them.

There is no 'easy' fix, though having a religion gives many a life purpose and peer group.

Sorry I don't like getting into a religion debates but I cannot let this slide. For a select few this may be the case(I would even say for people like your self this may be the case)

However this is a dangerous generalisation many religions persecute those who think differently or are different many of them have bloodied history's of doing the killing themselves.

Finding out that your not alone in your views does more for self esteem.

In life this can be hard and for most asking for help is hard and it can be as hard for those who have noticed to bring it up.

I talked with my son last night about this (he is a psychologist) and his advice is to tread very carefully with this subject and reflected, Suicide is a real problem here in NZ as it is in many countries, the reasons are many and the fix elusive. One thing he did say is suicides can go in clusters and when one is reported on or detailed there is often more that copy. That is one of the reasons for not detailing and keeping it low key. Low key is the answer, not talking about is not the answer as is over talking about it is not the answer. Being aware, being alert and always ask for help. To date the NZ media has taken a responsible line with this which is good.

In the interests of gaining more insight into this issue, especially where young people are concerned, a useful question might be whether those who make up such clusters still go on to commit suicide individually if it is not reported. People may be motivated to copycat if they hear about such a thing, but would those same people do it anyway even if they don't hear about it, except that it is just more spread out so it looks different in the statistics. Is anyone actually saved by not reporting it?

My son advised that is very difficult to assess, but his professional belief is that the current level of reporting is an important tool but is by no means a cure.

They do have pin-controlled access based on content rating. We use it across multiple devices - certainly it's available when using web browser or the Android app. Unsure about iphone app or other options. In 'Your Account', under Parental control settings, you can define a pin, and define the rating above which the pin is required to view. The selected pin and rating apply across all user profiles under the account, as far as I have seen.

Easiest way to make it enforceable is to remove it from the NZ Netflix store.. That would make the censor and all those who are complaining about it happy..

Who says they have to remove it? Netflix is not importing it to NZ, they are not retailing it, censors office cant do jack.

if we remove everything that someone complains about we would have nothing. i cannot think of a single thing at present that someone doesn't complain about. sadly our society seems to of turned into a victim mentality where people are offended by everything.

I personally would give this show a much lower rating so that we can get the suicide discussion going in NZ. It's a discussion we should be much further along if not for the stupid mentality of pushing it under the carpet so as not to encourage others to commit suicide.

So what was the point of classifying it then?

If the classification can't be monitored or enforced, what purpose does it serve?

Exactly. They need to stick to what they can actually do rather than trying to stick ratings on things that are not yet on a media where they have control.

At least we know if it makes it to physical media which ugly sticker local ones will be ruined with.
