Its all trivial trash that will never be brought up. I want to be seeing economic polices, immigration stances, environmental policies etc. Real world things that affect us.

They do have high level questions on all those things in that quiz though?

It isn't exhaustive, but it isn't a bad stab at finding a starting place.

It tells me I am:

Which is probably about right!

I'm a Labour or Green leaning voter, however The Opportunities Party's policies would seem to fit with me at the moment.  I think they have a chance to reach 5%..

I tend to agree with you, TOPS is a good think tank with interesting policies. However, I am concerned with the candidates put up, by ... well most parties. And if these small parties don't achieve 5% then is this fragmenting the vote, and handing more power to the likes of Winnie the Poo.  Remember the past when he held the country to ransom and the tail ends up wagging the dog.  I wish some other voters had better memory, or perhaps they like the main parties and the country in general disrupted?

Well, I wont be voting for the Greens or Mana party or Maori party. NZF it is. Go Winnie!

Taken with a grain of salt*

WTF is that Herald Quiz supposed to be?

Many of the questions are so completely absurd without further definition - just a couple of examples:

Should the government pass laws which protect whistleblowers?
(we already do have laws to protect whistleblowers)

Should the federal government regulate the internet?
(Uggh - WTF  is that supposed to mean "federal" government isn't a term we generally use here, "regulate" for what? )

Should laptops be banned on all direct flights departing from the Middle East?
(This is the only question under the heading "National Security Issues" - with basically zero relevance to any real NZ National Security issues)

I don't know if that site is intended to influence by bias, or if it is then which way that bias would manifest, but it's surely screaming "fake news" at me.

As my electorate vote is probably a waste whatever I do - Lab and Nat candidates have assured list seats - that possibly influences my party vote away from either.

I think it'll go to TOP - despite that being a vote against my own personal financial interests, and despite the fact that although I like GM, I don't think he's "leadership" material in terms of being able to have broad appeal - he gets right up people's noses - as he challenges orthodoxy - be that their obsession with cats or property or whatever else.

He's ideal opposition material, orthodoxy needs to be challenged with strong rational argument - I don't see any of the other minor parties doing that - they're also either stuck in their own orthodoxy (Greens, ACT), or vanity projects (NZF/Dunne) for inflated egos.

Polling at 1%. Potentially a wasted vote unless it's a protest vote. But that could change.

Personally I don't see Morgan as someone who could work constructively with other parties.

I don't see any of the major parties using strong rational argument either. ;)

But I don't see a great deal of new direction from TOP... some tweaks of the tax laws, but not really dealing with the underlying issues of tax avoidance and profit exporting and inequity. And no ethical base: Gareth openly says he avoids tax, and that it's unfair, and that he'll stop everyone doing it. The rest I see as deliberately provocative for visibility, not serious policy. ACT with a coat of paint and fireworks.

From a quick look, only Colmar Brunton seem to polling a result for TOP - I'd wager that there's a very high correlation between:

  • Wearing strings of pearls - to clutch in hands when something upsets you.
  • Cat ownership
  • Having a landline phone connection.

Yeah, I tried to do it but gave up. I had to customise nearly every answer. It would have taken me days. It looks to me like another one of those USA things that was hastily and sloppily modified for local consumption.

Do we even have a 'federal' government? Maybe iwi are a federation? Or North and South Island?

I liked the answer someone gave to the veil question (no problem with veils if no problem with appearing naked). I said they should only be allowed in combination with mini-skirts, but by then I had already given up.

I have no trouble to be honest other than the fact that it is still IMO a 2 horse race. The small parties have no real or useful effect and could be done away with without great loss. I'd never vote for them as I would regard it as a waste that risked letting in the side I did not want to be in charge.

The other parties are just splinter groups. If they had some nice policies, even one, and they got a share and were needed for a coalition, they have an opportunity to get some traction. I don't know anything about TOP, but I imagine that would be making publicity if they got a seat. If its just the main 2, then its the same thing. Take credit for gains that would have happened, make excuses for fails, which probably would have happened anyway as we just float in the global sea.

Maybe smaller parties can actually push to get NZ things done, rather than yak about it and visit schools and munted gorges, get media attention then go back to the office.

Try this website

https://newzealand.isidewith.com/political-quiz

Might give some insights.

I personally believe that if people NEED to go onto that website for guidance, they really should not be allowed to vote.

Very true. Indeed, the concept of the floating voter is alien to me. I'll happily cast all my votes in every election for my whole life tomorrow.
