Earthquake proof bridge?
And Terawhiti and Kaori Rip proof, 10 metre plus swell proof, 180k wind proof.
Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.
Was thinking possibly a tunnel.
It has to happen eventually, maybe in the next 150 years.
Maybe a ferry

Did not stop the 23.3 km Seikan Tunnel in Japan. So far it has survived many major earthquakes.

The Japanses link had 4 million ferry passengers per year 50 years ago ! Cook strait has approx 1 million per year NOW
A tunnel would have to part of a wider investment in a high speed rail network and with Bill E boy the latest in a long line of politicians favouring roads, I wouldn't bet on any tunnel rides for a while.
I'd be happy if they just moved the ferry terminals to the shortest stretch of water.

Hell, I'd be happy right now if they just fixed the pot hole in the road, around the corner from me. ![]()

There use to be a smaller, ferry from Mana/Plimerton about 10years ago. I think it got scrapped. Was probably too small.
That failed as it was uncompetitive and did not get the demand. The strait is well served now with Interislander , Strait Shipping and Air links

The strait is not well served. It takes 3+ hours to travel across a gap of 22 kms. I think we can do better.
