National is committing to the next generation of Roads of National Significance, National Party Transport Spokesperson Simon Bridges says.

“Our country is growing and we are committed to building world-class infrastructure to encourage that growth to continue,” Mr Bridges says.

“The original seven Roads of National Significance are now either complete or under construction, improving safety and travel times around the country and supporting New Zealand’s economic growth.

”The time has come for the next generation of nation-building projects so today we are announcing that 10 of the country’s most important routes will form the next generation of Roads of National Significance.”

They are:

·         Wellsford to Whangarei
·         East West Link in Auckland
·         Cambridge to Tirau
·         Piarere to the foot of the Kaimai Range
·         Tauranga to Katikati
·         Napier to Hastings
·         Manawatu Gorge
·         Levin to Sanson
·         Christchurch Northern Motorway
·         Christchurch to Ashburton

“The new roads are expected to cost around $10.5 billion, on top of the estimated $12 billion invested in the initial seven,” Mr Bridges says.

“Like the first tranche, they will be funded from the National Land Transport Fund and the use of Public-Private Partnerships.  The initial funding will come from our record infrastructure investment of $32.5 billion announced in Budget 2017.

“As we have previously said, once the original projects were completed new projects could come on and would be funded by existing revenue sources.

"Strong transport connections are critical for our growing regions and support New Zealand’s economic prosperity, and the Roads of National Significance are an important part of that. They are lead infrastructure projects meaning we are investing now to encourage future economic growth, rather than waiting until the strain on the network becomes a handbrake on progress,” Mr Bridges says.

“The chosen projects are our highest volume roads and they are a sensible and logical extension of the original seven projects. Together they will help provide a strong safe highway network that links our regions effectively with our major cities.

“The completed Roads of National Significance are also our safest, with no road fatalities to date.

“National is committed to building the infrastructure and transport system New Zealand needs to ensure our ongoing economic prosperity is secured,” Mr Bridges says.

Glad to see the Manawatu Gorge included in that list. Of the ten, that is the only one that is currently closed and having to rely on two local routes instead.

You would think they would finish the 10 bridges they promised in Northland first?

I don't believe Winston Peters, though he makes the most awesome promises!

It looks like a 2.5 horse race - National, Labour, and NZ First being the kingmaker should neither of them get an outright majority.

They say that they will be funded by public private partnerships. But what does that mean, and how do the private partners make money? Is it just a loan, or are they actually run privately where a private company puts a toll on the road?.

NZs population has been increasing significantly over the last few years, so this infrastructure is the minimum that is needed to cope with that, so why isn't that growth paying for them? Sounds like we are just passing off the cost onto future generations or making it more user pays.

Based on how long it took transmission gully to be signed off, and it is only just being built now, and that was less than 1 billion, I can't see these being built in  a huge hurry.

What makes me cynical is that they release all these major spends in election year, almost like one party is trying to trump the other.

One more thing, the estimated timeframe to building the hospital - 10 years.

It is possible that you vote him in, he does not have to spend a cent for the entire term of 3 years :)

And then what happens from there may or may not be his problem :)

Either way, I think if you are a Dunedinite, you'd want to see bulldozers pushing earth then maybe we'd start believing in things ... apparently the hospital is in a bad state of disrepair. So it is in the new govt's best interest to not spend more money fixing leaks, but of course it's not their problem, the DHB has to find its own money from somewhere. But perhaps half the blame lay on DHB management? Lol politics ...

Wasn't transmission a green fields project?

Much easier to get the approvals to upgrade an existing road corridor.

You have to question why 10 years, it should only take a 2-3 years to actually build it. The new Wellington childrens hospital that has been donated to Wellington, the developer who is donating it is apparently building it themselves, to prevent higher building costs and time delays. So you have to wonder what is broken with the way the government manages this sort of project.

Politicians also shouldn't be making promises that far out, as it is potentially committing a future government to something that they may not be able to budget for, or agree with..

True, although I think the main problem was actually the funding for it, as they did appear to already own the road corridor for it. One good thing though is that these projects are now actually being done. Many people didn't think they would live to actually see transmission gully being built.

I agree. Infrastructure has fallen behind, but it needs not to catchup, but stay close to the game by building it in such a way that it allows a more cost effective upgrade. Its been left too long to go whole hog and future proof it.

Funding. There are surpluses that have built up, although whats left after party promises (from both sides) remains to be seen. Tolls. Or debt. Debt would be the easiest.
