pedrogarcia: I am so happy to see the back of the Tories after nine long years. What a relief!

I think it was more a case that they had run their course and were stale. The same thing was said after Labour lost, and remember that the housing crisis started under Labour. National denying there was a housing crisis was also a big turn off. I wonder if they will now say there is a housing crisis when they start to criticize the new government

Well considering that people insist it only started once National took power, that seems fair.

An intersting situation, it is a minority government given a majority in confidence and supply. Labour and NZ first will need to legislate wisely or they can be out voted in the house. NZ Green does actually hold a lot of influence and not bound by a coalition agreement. I still believe we will have a new election well before 2020.

If the Greens were miffed, I would agree, but I feel they are happy. They are now in Govt, they have 3 Ministerial portfolios which will no doubt be eco related. With MT gone, that removes some extremism, and perhaps the Greens will realise that they need to be a green party and not get into left wing extreme politics. They could easily have been left with confidence and supply only, but they are being proportionally rewarded. It might be a real push in popularity for them

Here is a quote I just picked up from RNZ:

“One of the external challenges might actually be how mainstream media manage to engage with her leadership in a way that doesn’t invoke gender metaphors all the time and isn’t always just talking about her age.”

– Political scientist Jennifer Curtin wants the media to own the fact that Jacinda Ardern is the Prime Minister going forward and give her some room to demonstrate leadership in political management and the world political stage.

I do hope our media (and some commentators here) can now move past the fact that Jacinda Ardern is relatively young, female, and possessed of a bright smile, and accord her the respect that goes with the office. Maybe she will be a good PM. Maybe she will falter. At least judge her for her actions, and not for her looks.

Reasonably happy with the outcome given the way the votes came in.

My preference would have been NZ First governing alone, followed by NZ First as the senior coalition partner with WP as PM.

I'll be watching the policy announcements with interest, but sadly I suspect they won't go far enough, they've said they will stop more house sales to foreign owners after the new years, but I'd like to see them take that further and reacquire all the stock that has already been sold (in such a way that the foreign owners make no profit).

I always thought you had to earn respect, not just be accorded it due to a position you happen to have arrived at.

Otherwise you would have to respect Trump and AFAIK you don't.

Personally I will judge her on her governments achievements. However I always tend to be sceptical when someone arrives on the scene in a wave of populism. The Labour government of Tony Blair took over in the UK in similar circumstances to JA here. The electorate were tired of a grey, worn out Conservative party and Blair looked like a nice shiny, young alternative. How wrong could they be.

He is now one of the most reviled people in the UK.

You need only remember John Key talking about the housing crisis prior to the 2008 election. It got objectively worse under National and yet it was no longer a crisis and they did nothing about it!

Anyway, as inappropriate as it is I am quite interested in the Jacinda Ardern child situation. Sure a male politician wouldn't be asked, but men don't get pregnant or give birth so it's not comparable. She is in her late 30s now, perhaps if Labour lose the election she will step down and have kids, or if she wins she will do half a term then step down, while she's still kind of young enough.

Having said that I think it would be cool to have a current PM having a child. Surely unprecedented in modern times. And what about marriage?

Already done. She joined the Labour Party. That action alone condemns her in my eyes.

Aredwood: Not a good time for a new government. As the economy is showing signs of slowing. Housing market is already slowing.

The new government is going to find it very difficult to carry out their spending promises, with declining tax income. Without also putting the budget into the red. A capital gains tax won't bring in much tax income while the property market is declining.

Which spending promises are going to get the chop first? Either way hardly any groups of voters are going to get what they wanted.

I am more worried about a potential nuclear war, and Trump has access to the button. I am not sure that a captial gains tax was supposed to bring in much more income, it was more about controlling house price inflation.  Capping foreign buyers of existing houses is possibly going to have a far bigger affect. Will be interesting to see some of those Auckland auction houses over the next few months.

It will be interesting to see whether legal challenges to enforce rights under free trade agreements which purportedly give many other nationalities property rights cause the whole thing to fade away.

I tend to think that's entirely her business. It is comparable in many ways.

Well, she got a tiny bit of respect for managing to put together a plate of biscuits tempting enough for Winston Peters, however, it was shot to hell when she decided to support installing Trevor Mallard (One of the worst MP's ever under Helen Clark) as speaker of the house. Along with even considering giving a lifetime unionist the small business portfolio and so far she isn't doing so great in my books.

About the only positive thing I can see out of a Labour led Government (That I think they will be able to maybe deliver on compared to promises) is *maybe* we get rail to the airport, finally.

Mallard was previously elected to the position of Assistant Speaker under a National Party government. That makes him the logical choice for the position of Speaker under the new government. The house previously elected Mallard to the Assistant Speaker position unanimously. It seems likely Ardern will be respected for this entirely logical choice.

It's almost like networkn managed to find the best possible example of a good decision and then somehow, against all reason, interpret it as a bad one.

It will be interesting all right.

From what I can see, with the exception of Chile and Aus, every other FTA partner has restrictions on foreigners - including NZers - owning and/or or profiting from the ownership of property.

I don't think FTA NZ is signed up with give special privilege to citizens from partner countries to own property here - because NZ is a free for all - at least for properties worth less than $10 million.  Over $10 million and you need a rubber stamp from the OIO, or even better, if you've got the right connections and make a small donation, you get given a passport anyway.

In my view, TM was one of the worst politicians to serve under HC and shouldn't be in charge of counting paperclips. It's more than a little surprising to me that National would have supported this. Regardless of that, I still don't support it under Labour for the same reasons. People have short memories.

Having worked in policy areas of Government departments for 8 years this will be the first time I have worked under Labour so going to be an interesting period. Am currently in an area that's going to be heavily involved in things they want to do so expecting it to get pretty busy.
