NZ First leader Winston Peters has announced he will form a Government with Labour.

But the Greens appear not to be part of the coaltion government and will instead hold a confidence and supply agreement.

An intersting situation, it is a minority government given a majority in confidence and supply. Labour and NZ first will need to legislate wisely or they can be out voted in the house. NZ Green does actually hold a lot of influence and not bound by a coalition agreement. I still believe we will have a new election well before 2020.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I have a lot of respect for Jacinda Adern she pulled around a party that was in free fall, I hope NZ gives her a fair chance to prove herself. I feel she could be a good PM.

I love that Winston's preamble included a "things are going to custard in the future, so if things go to custard under this arrangement it's not my fault" (paraphrasing) statement.
Interesting to see how many of the bold promises are kept. You know, the health care for all, etc. And how many are swept away under the 'couldn't get the coalition to agree' excuse.
Hope the shambles that has unfolded since the announcement isn't a sign of things to come.
Wish I had bought my US Dollars for our trip last week :-(

Its not about giving her a fair chance...she is either up to being PM or she isnt. It is the top job afterall.

She has a huge job and she will have a huge opposition. It is Jacinda that needs to prove herself..not for NZers to make it easy.

I hope she does good by NZers, and the Country. She needs to prove herself to most of us or she will be gone very quickly. She has people in her own party nipping at her heals as well wanting her job.

Good luck to her...although it isnt luck she needs.

I am not saying we should make it easy, I just believe NZ needs to relax and let  her/them get on with it.

Not a good time for a new government. As the economy is showing signs of slowing. Housing market is already slowing.

The new government is going to find it very difficult to carry out their spending promises, with declining tax income. Without also putting the budget into the red. A capital gains tax won't bring in much tax income while the property market is declining.

Which spending promises are going to get the chop first? Either way hardly any groups of voters are going to get what they wanted.

I would hope it is far too late now. You still need roads anyway for electric cars, and the fact is that due to earthquakes and risk, Wellington needs that new point of access.

What really annoys me about all this though, is that us voters have no say in which party actually wins power, due to the way MMP works, and how a small party can . I think the rules need changing so parties must either confirm who they would align with , or they are prevented from aligning with any party. Potentailly the Greens could have had just as much power as NZ first.  I suppose one good thing is  that we now have a very strong single  opposition party, considering they are the biggest party in Parliament, yet they have zero power. I do wonder how long that can last for based on history.

I think it was more a case that they had run their course and were stale. The same thing was said after Labour lost, and remember that the housing crisis started under Labour. National denying there was a housing crisis was also a big turn off. I wonder if they will now say there is a housing crisis when they start to criticize the new government

We are very lucky. I didn't really care who WP went with, because we would be ending up with similar types of policy changes, and they are still very central. But we did need to fix the big probelms such as housing, health and the polluted rivers.

I am more worried about a potential nuclear war, and Trump has access to the button. I am not sure that a captial gains tax was supposed to bring in much more income, it was more about controlling house price inflation.  Capping foreign buyers of existing houses is possibly going to have a far bigger affect. Will be interesting to see some of those Auckland auction houses over the next few months.
