I think this is worthy of prominent display. Scroll down to the second story after the one about the shooting.

dejadeadnz: Sad for the individuals victimised and their families, obviously. But there is absolutely no rational reason to give one more bit of thought to these incidents or debate how to fix these problems because most Americans ultimately don’t care about innocents dying at the hands of these maniacs. If they did, they would have done some of the obvious and rational things by now.

For once I mostly agree with you. It seems like not much is happening, but in reality, there IS a shift in the thinking. Has it made it to federal legislature yet, no, but there is definitely local and state changes occurring and after Trump's term, I suspect the next big election issue will be Gun reform.

Whilst entirely anecdotal, I have 3 American friends who it just wasn't sensible to have a discussion about gun control with 5 years ago. These are educated smart people doing good work in their community, but seemingly the lifetime of pro-gun attitude stopped their reasoning in this regard. All 3 now support pretty significant changes to gun control.

I suspect within 5-8 years, there will be much better control of guns within the USA. Maybe not to the level of NZ, but it will have improved greatly.

I'll not soon forget a Teenage girl on TV after a shooting saying on National TV, "F*** your thoughts and prayers, give us F* laws and legislation".

12 dead in college night country dance bar shooting:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/08/us/shooting-california-thousand-oaks.html

Gunman was a marine veteran previously studied sports medicine after service and did not pursue the career. Glock 45 with an extended magazine. Initial reports described the weapon as an Uzi.

What is left to be said about this? I am sorry for those who lost their lives, and for those who mourn them.

It's hard not to be trite, as another white, long-time citizen, lone shooter is responsible.

I'm sure Trump and Republicans "thoughts and prayers" will go out to the victims.

I'm Trump won't say "if they were only armed, there wouldn't be so many dead" as six police officers were already there.

Of course, Trump will be warning about "violent and deadly" immigrants hundreds of miles away, who may potentially throw rocks, instead of gun control.

More people shooting in a dark crowded space. Doesn't sound like it would have produced a (much) better result

Not appropriate in this context. People died.

I find it really hard to empathise with the shootings these days. They seem so common and nothing seems to change. Hearing pro gun stances valuing a 2nd amendment made prior to the days of mass shootings over fellow country mens lives is unbelievable.

Another school shooting. 8km from Columbine. I get the feeling things will begin to happen in gun licensing.

Not directly related, but shows how easy it is to amass guns in the US.

Even though California has stricter gun laws, by US standards, it's a short drive to Arizona where guns laws are very lax.

More than 1,000 guns seized from a home in upscale Los Angeles neighborhood

More than 1,000 guns were found in a home in the upscale Los Angeles neighborhood of Holmby Hills, but authorities said there was no indication they were used in crimes.

"At this time, there is no indication they were, but that could change as the investigation continues," Ginger Colbrun, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said Thursday. Authorities will trace all the weapons, she said.

ATF agents and Los Angeles police officers on Wednesday executed a search warrant in an investigation of someone suspected of manufacturing and selling illegal firearms, Los Angeles police Officer Jeff Lee said.

The property resembled "a hoarder's house" and it took 30 law enforcement officers more than 15 hours to clear the house and remove all the weapons, a law enforcement official familiar with the investigation told CNN.
