Mass shooting at Madden gamer tournament:

cnn: Multiple people were killed in a shooting during a video game tournament at a shopping and dining complex in downtown Jacksonville, Florida, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Sunday afternoon.

Preliminary reports say 11 people were shot, four of them fatally, at the Jacksonville Landing, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the incident.

One suspect, identified only as a white man, is dead at the scene, Sheriff Mike Williams said at a news conference, adding that there were no outstanding suspects. The Sheriff's Office said on Twitter there were "multiple" fatalities and "many" transported to hospitals.

Why even bother starting a thread for this? Another day in America, another shooting. Ho-hum. Move on, nothing to see here.

Depending on the history of the killer there may be some discussion about online gaming culture in some games:

LA Times: The shooter was a gamer who was competing in the tournament and lost, according to Stephen “Steveyj” Javaruski, one of the competitors. The shooter “targeted a few people” and shot at least five victims before killing himself, Javaruski told The Times in a direct message on Twitter. The gunman killed two or three people “that I saw,” Javaruski said.

It was a very outraged and angry response to a crazy ongoing obscenity that no-one there has the courage or honesty to do anything about. Save your indignation for the NRA and the callous and offensive morons who continue to support it.

Hardly. She's 100% correct. The brutal reality is that these events are entirely caused by a system that a large number of Americans show no sign of wanting to disturb or to encourage their elective representatives to disturb (i.e. the ridiculous ease with which high powered guns can fall into the hands of the palpably deranged or unsuitable). Whilst some of the grief and apparent expressions of solidarity after such events may be heartfelt, the lack of action basically means that a significant number of Amercians are happy to continue to have their fellow citizens (and gun crimes being what they are, the victims are often the most discriminated against and vulnerable) be collateral damage. I think that makes them terrible people and would consider them to be far more callous than anyone making the obvious point of calling that out.

Off subject, I saw a website on black "preppers." Preppers are usually associated with large gun collections.

"Sharon Ross is beautiful, smart, female and is an African American Prepper and Gun Enthusiast who currently working on a website www.Afrovivlist.com, she promotes the Prepper Life, owns 60 acres of land where she is in the process of building a house in the middle of nowhere in the wild, miles from any civilization.

Additionally she is an Expert with the Bow and Rifle. And she likes Guns……….This is a tough 'Sista'!"

So the predictable has happened. It has emerged that the shooter has a troublesome mental health history but was nonetheless able to easily buy a gun. No doubt the usual right wing dullards will declare that mental health is the problem and not the excessive availability of guns. Funnily enough, no other similar country has the rate of mass shootings of the US.

Outside of the usual "Look at me, I am a nice guy and love courtesy!" prancers, it's impossible for anyone half way intelligent to draw any conclusion other than Americans broadly not giving a toss about such needless deaths.

It's really hard not to make light of the Florida shooting, It was legal to set up a home gun range on your property till 2016. Moreover it was strictly illegal for the police to stop you from shooting on your land.
