Going into Iowa primary polling some candidates have taken big steps taking a few points from Biden:

Biden - 24%
Sanders - 16%
Warren - 15%
Buttigieg - 14%
Harris - 7%

Desmoins Register:Twenty-four percent of Iowa’s likely Democratic caucusgoers say former vice president Biden is their first choice for president. Sanders, a Vermont senator, is the first choice for 16% of poll respondents, while Warren, a Massachusetts senator, and Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, Indiana, are at 15% and 14% respectively.

No other candidate cracks double digits. California Sen. Kamala Harris comes closest at 7%, and other numbers within the poll indicate some underlying strengths for her.

To some extent online voting and phone voting will be allowed this year.

Democrats rally behind Kamala Harris following Donald Trump Jr.’s “birther-style” tweet

The president’s son retweeted an alt-right personality who claimed Harris is not authentically African American.

Sen. Kamala Harris’s rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination have come to her defense following Donald Trump, Jr. retweeting a message that questioned the senator’s ancestry and identity.

During last Thursday’s Democratic debate, Harris joined a discussion of a police shooting and said, “As the only black person on this stage, I would like to speak on the issue of race.” She proceeded to speak directly to former Vice President Joe Biden about the ways she’d been helped by an anti-discrimination policy he’d lobbied against in his youth.

Following that speech, Trump, Jr. retweeted a member of the alt-right who claimed that because Harris’ parents are Jamaican and Indian, her experience does not represent the authentic African American experience. “Kamala Harris is implying she is descended from American Black Slaves,” the tweet read. “She’s not. She comes from Jamaican Slave Owners. That’s fine. She’s not an American Black. Period.”

“Is this true? Wow.” Trump wrote. He later deleted the tweet; his spokesperson,

By the time Trump’s message was deleted, Harris’s Democratic rivals had come to her defense. Biden, with whom Harris has differed on the issues of race and civil rights of late, wrote he saw parallels between claims that Obama is not a US citizen and those that Harris is not truly black.

“The same forces of hatred rooted in ‘birtherism’ that questioned Barack Obama’s American citizenship, and even his racial identity, are now being used against Senator Kamala Harris,” Biden said. “It’s disgusting and we have to call it out when we see it. Racism has no place in America.”

IMO with Sanders at #4, he should opt out ASAP.  Not because I don't like him or his policies, but because of 2016.  His "faithful" protested by not voting at all - as they were encouraged to do.  They'll do it again, Trump and Putin will target them again, via the latest incarnation of Internet Research Agency, Cambridge Analytica etc.

Too bad Oprah Winfrey hasn't run. She'd clobber Trump, and that's all that matters.

He's unlikely to do that. If near the end the two leading candidates don't make a deal then his potential endorsement can bring voters towards one candidate and break a tie. Not even the first primary yet.

I watched maybe an hour of the second debate. Health care was a big issue. All of the candidates saying fix it. Biden somehow managed to keep his hand in his pocket and seems to be taking the expand Obamacare middle option at the same time. Imo unless he's crystal clear all the way through he will lose votes to Trump and also lose some existing democratic voters who will hear same old same old.

That is because Biden is more of the same old same old. Just like Hilary was. As for Sanders, his presence is forcing the other candidates to adopt more progressive policies. I think Warren has shifted a fair bit as has Harris compared to earlier campaigns etc.

What's the chance of Biden being offered and accepting the second chair, and therefore being given a chance to be VP again? Theoretically, it may work to entice back some of those very voters who may otherwise be scared off by a more liberal Dem candidate.

Without some appropriate pairing that tries to at least pretend to unite the more conservative/backward-looking and liberal wings of the party, they really run the risk of alienating a good proportion of their base and/or potential support, whichever the leanings of the particular final choice.

Of course, following Harris' take-down of Biden during the second debate, that particular pairing may be a tricky one! I'd not seen her in action before, and she was a confident force in that debate.
