No - but I think that the right thing to do would be to keep it zipped. This is an emergency - Labour fell in behind to support emergency response to the Cant'y quakes, despite that giving draconian powers to the government at the time (which they ended up cynically abusing - but that's another story).

Play the ball not the person. He's in a no win and no lose position. During this time he needs to be calm and measured. The economy is tanking so there will be ample opportunity to attack this closer to the election.

He just comes across as whiney.

So the leader of the opposition can't critique what appears to be an ideologically-driven plan to deal with a national emergency? OK.

Just watched what must be one of the most pointless political interviews I’ve seen in a while on “One News”. Jessica Mutch MacKay talking to the PM live. “Air New Zealand could make 3500 people redundant, what is the government doing about that?” To which the PM responded that they were in discussions with the airline so she couldn’t comment at the moment. The interviewer immediately asked, “what form will the assistance take?” I thought the PM did well to not point out how dumb the follow up question was. The next question asked if the PM thought her government had been too slow in responding. At best it was dumb to ask any politician if they thought their actions were timely and correct.

I wish the media would get a grip.

Forgive me, I'm just a little gutted that millionaire boomers get even more money for power bills regardless of financial need salaried workers who are paying for this get literally nothing out of this package, despite having things mortgages to pay to keep a roof over our heads.

OK follow-up post: I have now seen the replay of the Parliamentary session. I was not aware that Bridges ranted about building roads. I think there's a lot not to like about the package and the lack of support for working families, but I think it's fair to say I like Simon Bridges even less.

The sooner Judith knifes him, the better.

The RBNZ cut the OCR, not the government. Also, if you're on a fixed mortgage, you have to break to get a reduced rates, and that costs money. Also, fixed rates haven't really moved at all. Something like 80% of retail mortgage lending is on a fixed-term basis so...

The assistance is for businesses to keep people working, not much use if you end up getting laid off anyway and still have a mortgage to pay.

If the number of infected people doubles every few days, then 13 weeks is enough time to infect everyone on earth.

I don't expect that to happen.

But, in a pandemic, things can move very quickly.

This is the initial package. They've brought forward some stuff that was always going to be part of the budget and then added the support for wages.

They've already said there will be more in the budget.

Yea having sat down and gone through it, the only bit where he's remotely on message is the lack of support for people who actually end up losing their jobs.

Goldsmith, on the other hand, sounded frankly Prime Ministerial by comparison:

So, overall, there are a number of other useful things that have been done here and signalled, with smaller business having to pay provisional tax—extending those thresholds, increasing the amount with which businesses can invest in buying capital assets. We agree with all that; that all makes sense. But the critical message that we need to get across is that this is a threat to the New Zealand economy such as we have not seen in a generation, and we need right now maximum support to keep people in their jobs. This package announced today goes half way, and roughly half of the $12 billion package will actually get into their hands immediately. We think that there should be more and it should be more swift and more effective in order to save those jobs.

If in a few weeks time if you're still able to call yourselves a "working family", you're probably going to be part of an elite.

Thank you for acknowledging that Bridges doesn't have any of the qualities to lead NZ.

So when is the Goff Tax (Auckland Regional Fuel Tax) going to be removed? Surely drastic fiscal times mean this should be gone forthwith?
