Handle9:

Have you seen the methodology for NPS (Net Promoter Score)? From what I can tell this is kind of similar. I'm not the biggest fan of that methodology either but there is some logic to it.

They are trying to classify via strong reactions. If you are in 1 0-6 range you are negative, 7-8 you are neutral on a issue and can be discarded. 99-10 is positive. Most people will give a 7 for "don't care but don't want to offend the person asking" surveys. More critical people (like me) will give a 5 but generally that's the way it works.

For NPS the theory is if you are in the middle you aren't really a loyal customer, you are ambivalent. It's the same for this from what I can tell.

Imagine surveying a scientist customer base with that methodology ... exactly what I had to do in previous role.

A scientist is usually a person would change they survey form if they could.  You can imagine how they rate things in surveys.

neb: t it's long past time that Winston got taken out behind the bike shed.

What happened behind the bike shed at your school?

At my school people generally went behind the bike shed for 420 or other fun things.

The idiom is more usually wood shed, but I doubt people still have those. It's where you take an old dog that's long past its useful life and send it to the doggy kennel in the sky.

What we really need to do is stop talking about violently ending someones life.

What we really need to do is learn what an idiom is.,

Yes, I was imagining that what normally happens behind the wood/wool shed was happening behind the bike shed at your school 😄.  Rowan Atkinson's 'fatal beating' skit came to mind.

For most of my life I have voted National. The last two elections I have not. The compass shows NZ Green, TOP and Labour I most agree with. The leaders followed that path as well with Ardern, Shaw and Davidson. The Least liked parties were New Conservative, NZ First and Act and the least like leaders Collins, Peter and Tamihere.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

I don't like some of the questions. They're ambiguous and loaded IMO.

I had trouble with a lot of the questions for the same reason. I often voted Neutral or I don't know.

The whole thing felt leading.

I thought some questions were horrifically vague... not wanting to start a debate on specific questions as it will get OT lol, but yeah.. a couple in particular had massive duality where the only sane answer was "it depends" as policy needed to happen on both sides... that doesn't really satisfy a cancelling out or "neutral" answer... dumbing down issues like that is basically how the problems started.

I landed smack bang in the middle of the compass :/

Centre-left, I will still vote Green because Labour policies this year are boring and do nothing to mitigate inequality.

If you can come up with a policy that mitigates inequality and is affordable for the intervening period of time, before it starts paying back in reduced cost, you should stand for parliament.

The countries I'm aware of that do good job of this still have inequality, but mitigate the harm caused by it.  They tend to be wealthy, western democracies with large and profitable industrial sectors - for example Norway, Germany the Netherlands.

Lots of folk want to end inequality right up to the time they find out how much it will cost them.

No modern system of govt I'm aware of has removed inequality.  Uneven distribution seem to be a fundamental aspect of human activity (the so called "90/10" rule e.g. 10% of authors make 90% of sales).

It seems the best that can be done is: -
- Redistribute income, which moderates inequality somewhat (ask a Swede/German how they feel about their  top tax rate); and
- Have wrap around social services in place to mitigate the harms caused by inequality (you need to have the per capita income to fund this).

So what you need is a society knee deep in cash, where med-high income earners will tolerate eye-watering tax rates, to support zero - low income earners

@MikeAqua I do believe that moving to a more equal society needs to start with education. We need to promote a high education values and make it easier for more people to obtain higher education. As a society I feel New Zealand needs to endure the pain of higher taxes to reach a higher educated society. The payback will be higher incomes and thus lower taxation in the future. We need to bring in capital gains tax including houses not used as owner occupier. We need to change how student loans are repaid, what needs to happen is when a student graduates for each year they stay in New Zealand a portion of their student loan is written off, if the leave the country to worth loan then come repayable. This keeps the investment in higher education in New Zealand.

With regards to Welfare payments the fixed rates need to be removed and the benefit rates flexible to take into account and individuals needs. There should be provisions to pay for changing regions to uptake employment that includes moving cost, schooling costs, rehousing and medical where needed. This will stop folks ending up in poverty traps if a major employer in a region closes or relocates.

There needs to be a greater investment in primary health and my first point regarding student loans may help this by encouraging more folk to train to become primary health providers.

Education is an essential tool for upward mobility but the opportunities need to be there.

We can't tax our way to wealth.  We need to generate more wealth in this country not move it around.  Govt is inefficient and wastes money while reallocating it.  Better to have people who can work, earning a good income directly and leave govt to look after those who are incapable of earning an income.

We need an economic strategy that adds to our economy.  I have no idea what that is.  What is our competitive advantage as a country outside of our natural resources?

Selling the same 2 million homes to each other at ever escalating prices is the plan. Regardless of who you vote for, they stick with it.
