Winston spoke nicely, actually.

This will be the first MMP electionwhere a party can govern alone, no checks and balances and not sure that this is a good thing

Credit where it is due. Jacinda's speech was darned impressive. Great content, great manner and fluency with NO notes.

Well done.

Let's hope NZ can do well in hard times ahead.

So good when the leaders in this country (Labour, National, Greens even Winston) can speak in a way you can understand without them looking like an orange moron.

GV27:

Eh, no sane person expected a National win, but this is pretty surprising none the less. More so in the rural electorates where there is a legitimate swing to the left, which I didn't expect.

It's not a swing to the left but a big national thumbs-up to Jacinda's handling of Covid19. We did better than most, if not all of, the first world, and as well as many third-world countries.

There was that and National really were a shambling mess.

Collins did the best she could but 3 leaders in 2 months and continual infighting meant there was no viable alternative.

Good point. Heard some wag observe that having their bash at the Yacht Club was useful since it'd provide somewhere to moor the sinking ship.

Surprised to see so many seats that I thought would be National for a trillion years flip to Labour - Nelson and Northcote immediately come to mind.

I thought Jacinda gave a nice speech, but she could have acknowledged Judith's effort a little better/more than she did (Judith did it for her).

Small sample size, but I know a number of National supporters who voted Labour not just because of the obvious Covid19 but also to keep Winston, and to a lesser extent the Greens, out. Mostly Winston though. So he may have been Labour's secret weapon.

I think a lot of the rural swing vote towards Labour was because they didn’t want Labour to govern together with the Greens and knowing a National vote was a waste of time, they voted to give Jacinda mandate to govern alone. Am not sure that’s how it will play out though and the next few days will be interesting. As Jacinda said...she’s the leader of ALL New Zealander’s so will she take this into account and keep the Greens away.

Kelvin Davis' comments about Judith’s husband I thought were out of line and offensive. We will likely hear more about his poetry in the next few days. A pity because all the Party Leaders were gracious in their speeches, surprisingly even Winston.

Wong Tung chose to enter the nasty side of the campaign himself when he started sharing some of the nasty memes on social media. There's always this sort of stuff for the party faithful but it doesn't tend to be televised. It's not particularly nice but there has been three years of very nasty memes and rumours from National and they got flogged tonight.

I think saying that Ardern has a mandate to keep the greens away is fairly silly. The left block has a strong mandate for it's agenda, much as the right block did in 2011 and 2014. I strongly agree with Hootons column this week that the right had deluded itself about it's claims to power this term. Until it gets over that it'll continue to be a mess.

One thing that is pleasing to see is that roughly 200k more people voted in advance and on the day. It'll be interesting to see how that affected the special vote numbers but more people voting can only be postive. It'll be interesting to see the demographics but I read a number of reports of younger enrollments being significantly higher than previous years.

And isn't it amazing how we can shuffle our vote instead of having it welded to one party?

And isn't it great that we won't allow AR15 carrying loonies to walk the streets and probably their voting sites?

And isn't it great.................. etc etc.

The contrasts are so glaringly in our favour. How fair, sensible and grown up we look in comparison.

I’m just happy it’s finally over.

It will probably take until the next election or two for National to realise that appealing to the fundamentalist factions aren’t going to win you votes.
I suspect ACT will implode this term as with 10 MPs with even more extreme views David will struggle to keep them in line and one or two will pull a JLR style defection.

And Labour will be under immense pressure to deliver on their promises without raising taxes... which we all know needs to happen to pay for the society we all want to live in.
