Rikkitic:

I was actually referring to the catholic church, not American protestant fundamentalists. In spite of the schisms, it is still possible to generalise about it overall. But the point you make is a good one. I sometimes wonder if America as a whole isn't having a nervous breakdown of some kind.

The schism in the Presbyterian church I mentioned was in NZ, not "American" protestant fundamentalists - they're here too, in many different forms, and some are deeply involved with politics in NZ.

Most of the schisms are tiny compared to the parent organisations.

Rikkitic: I agree the Church actually is sort of moving in the right direction, but with painful hesitancy. I was just pointing out the absurdity of saying it is all right to be gay, but not all right to have gay sex.

On the plus side the Catholic Church seems to be taking the position that consensual gay sexuality which is necessarily outside marriage even between life partners because the church is currently unwilling to grant that sacrament to gay people - is just one of many possible sins. Ie; not deserving of any special or particular condemnation or obsession on the part of religious authorities. This is kind of an improvement on previous positions.

Pete Buttigieg's partner may have said it best for Americans:

Roman Catholicism itself is the result of a schism.

And nope:

There's no "plus side" to bigotry, and as same sex marriage is legal in all US states then what you've said is incorrect.  They forbid such marriage in their church solely because they're backward bigots, and invent excuses by claiming that the "invisible man in the sky" is behind it all. They lobby governments with threats to withdraw support of their members if they don't get their own way - to continue to discriminate in a manner that's illegal in civil society.  That's not reasonable, not secular and not how it should be ion a democracy.
