antonknee: The candidates for Auckland mayor all suck frankly.

Molloy is an utter cretin. Viv Beck has helped to ruin Auckland’s city centre. John Palino doesn’t even live here.

Craig Lord maybe shows promise on the face of it, but he’s an unknown quantity and I don’t think he could achieve much.

Efeso Collins will certainly get my vote. At least he has (mostly) okay ideas and has been a councillor already.

Mr Collins has been a councilor but his attendance record is terrible.  Its not abstaining from votes, its actually being absent from the meetings.  How can you represent your constituents when you dont turn up?

In saying that I agree that they all suck.  The risk of getting a worse outcome by people not voting worries me most of all.

According to news reports, there are real problems getting people to stand for office at all. This can't be good for government on any level. I don't know why it is, or what could be done. It can't only be remuneration.

Playing Devils Advocate, would it be such a bad thing to have less councilors making decisions?  The layers of bureaucracy are astounding at a local board and council level.  The amount of meaningless discussion and trivial issues does not appeal at all.  I considered running in the past but attending a few meetings, reading through minutes etc killed any interest.  It seemed you could do twice the work with half the people.

A good question for John Palino too, who - as I say - doesn't even live here.

Molloy is out apparently. Brown is now apparently the leading CR candidate.

I have real misgivings about this as he was behind the janky port study that suggested we could get rid of the port out of the Auckland region altogether and instead set-up a distribution hub in West Auckland - which happens to be a) already basically zoned to the hilt for housing and b) already a congested nightmare.

Not that he has many plans to do much about that either.

Really hoping Collins gets up because Brown is fairly knowledgeable about the council structures and operations, whereas Molloy would have just made a lot of noise but probably wouldn't have done much damage.

Bye Molloy indeed! Good riddance to bad rubbish, and I hope the hospitality venture he’s working on instead keeps him distracted from loudmouthing and troublemaking - although I don’t think it will.

I agree that councils could do with a significant diet. Local government is dreadfully ineffective, inefficient, and impractical. I get that it makes some people feel nice to have local representation and decision making - but most people clearly don’t actually care about that, or more of them would engage in local elections (aka vote or maybe even run).

Some fact-checking from the campaign trail.

I thought this was quite humourous: Ask Wayne Brown to "fix" something and he backs himself to get it done. Ask him to come up with a plan, though, and he's at sea. Surefire way to lose votes there!

Viv Beck has followed Leo Molloy and also pulled out now as well - coincidentally on the day voting ballots are being sent out.

Looks like it's coming down to Efeso and Wayne at this point.

It's not just the Mayoralty, but the rest of council, wards, boards are also important.
There is a lot of potential to load with Destiny and like-minded Evangelicals.
Antivax and freedom to block motorways crowd.
It's a bit harder to sort the lower profile people.

Happy voting !

Oh well, guess it's another three years of stagnant nothingness, worsening congestion and government by rent-seeking gerontocracy for young people in Auckland.

Oh no Wayne is Mr Fix-It, didn't you know? 😀 he gets things done by yelling at people, apparently.
