Musk single handedly (so to speak) started the electric car industry at scale. Many countries have now mandated an end to fossil fuel vehicles. This is all down to the effort of Musk and Tesla. Resale value remains high and I assume this is partly because Tesla's vehicles are reliable.

Imo there are some dangers for Tesla. Purchase of a new car is a discretionary touchy feely thing. Many people react badly to Musk's recent statements and union busting efforts. Being friendlier with the current government really could help. In that department Ford and GM are getting government attention that Tesla isn't. Also, Ford has a big winner in the F150 lightning before Tesla has started in that market.

What will SpaceX achieve. The target is colonisation of Mars. It could happen.

@Dingbatt if all you said was accurate do you believe he did this out of altruism? If you do think again, he did it for wealth. What is obscene? The level of wealth held by 10 people on a planet with massive problems that cost untold lives per year is obscene. That they parade that wealth is obscene. That collectively they are planets worst tax avoiders, that is obscene. Shall I go on?

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Say what you will about him but he has made significant progress for EV's and space flight. No doubt his head has gotten too big for his shoulders recently. I really don't understand how he has so many fan boys and why they remain so loyal, you only need to go to any investor groups online, eg on facebook and see how giddy people are about Telsa, they will defend Musk with passion. To me its bizarre.

Other companies have done more to make EVs mainstream for example Nissan. Tesla are expensive and frankly poorly built. One just has to examine the shut lines on them.

So your problem isn’t with Musk as such? It’s with anybody who is successful. Yes, the sums involved are unimaginable to most of us. You sound like a Miss World contestant wishing for world peace and an end to all hunger and suffering. Great in a kumbuyah kind of way, but until the NWO is established, it’s not going to happen. And for the vast majority it’s not going to happen afterwards either.

Nissan has produced very small numbers in EV compared to Tesla. Compared to Tesla on numbers Nissan is a boutique manufacturer for a niche.

Can you point me towards Musk's epic superyacht ocean liner? Nope he ain't got one. You might justifiably accuse Musk of love of engineering and things like that.

More seriously Tesla does need to keep going because it's still dragging the industry forward away from fossil fuels and providing a benchmark for reliability and battery life.

Again more seriously there is a limit to how much electrifying the car industry can contribute to CO2 reduction. There are other things to look at Musk could conceivably give some attention to.

This type of throwing his weight around doesn't endear him to me.

Didn’t Elon recently pay the most amount of tax ever by any individual?

Typical kiwi attitude of disliking success.

Every business avoids tax. Claiming expenses is avoiding tax.

Incorrect, I applaud success I dislike greed. I am a business owner and applying expenses legally in the profit and loss accounts is not the same as deliberate avoidance such as registration of businesses in tax havens and manipulation of where geographically revenue is generated.

You are also a tax avoider because you deliberately claim expenses to reduce your tax liability.   You should target the tax system rather than individuals as they have a responsibility to maximise shareholder return.

Claiming legitimate expenses is not considered 'tax avoidance' in NZ. 'Tax Avoidance' here is a specific thing that is an absolutely stonking no-no.
