Being from the UK, my first eligible (18 years old) election was 1997, I voted Labour (Tony Blair), I also voted Labour again in 2001. I moved to NZ in 2002 and my first ability to vote was in 2005, I voted National as for me they were/are as close to a Blair(ite) party in NZ there is and have done so up to 2020. So in my (British) view, I have been a centre left voter, I know that doesn't suit NZ (or some on this site) as National is seen a centre right or even right wing party. Next year though, I'm seriously considering voting ACT as they seem to represent where my political learnings are now.

I'm not going to get into abortion (I was on the wrong end of one), or trans rights etc. Because I've learned pretty quickly, if you don't have the 'right' (that changes almost daily) view, I'll be called some sort of 'phobe' of 'ist' and I've got a daughter who's part of the community...

I aim to misbehave.

Paul1977: But I think you do people a disservice if you assume that anyone making these arguments have the same nefarious intentions, or that when they do that people fall for it.

Point taken. Again, my apologies.
