neb: US annual gun deaths are around 45,000. Ukraine is currently taking around 100-200 casualties a day in the fighting, but casualties include both dead and wounded, not just deaths. So the US has roughly the same amount of daily gun deaths as an active war zone.

I doubt if that includes suicide. Most suicides are gun based cause its easy.

gzt: After the number of dead it only remains to know what the beef was, how many posts on Facebook, and how recently the weapons were legally purchased.

You forgot the all-important thoughts and prayers. You can't have a mass shooting without thoughts and prayers to make the victims whole again.

Followed shortly thereafter by it being too soon to talk about gun control.

Suicides are difficult to quantify because of the stigma attached to them in the US. There is speculation that a lot of "it went off while he was cleaning it" cases are hidden suicides. Conversely, there are suicides that don't get reported as such. So suicide figures in the US are pretty nebulous, with a lot of estimation involved.

I saw a right-wing website state that knifes are 5x more deadly than guns, in a self-funded study, without giving any details.

Mass shooting with "just" handguns do happen. Also most US states allow 10 round magazines and quick load devices for even revolvers.

It's certainly not impossible to injure a lot of people with a knife, to kill a lot of people requires some form of assault rifle (or bomb.)

Annual Review of Criminology : Firearm Instrumentality: Do Guns Make Violent Situations More Lethal?
...
Gun control advocates suggest that many of these deaths would be replaced by nonfatal injuries if guns were not available; in essence, they suggest that a more refined slogan would be “people without guns injure people; guns kill them”

The purported strong will to kill as the key determinant of mortality is challenged by the noteworthy similarity in the characteristics and circumstances of fatal and nonfatal gun-assault incidents. Mortality in many gun attacks seems to be influenced by chance events, such as the number and placement of wounds, the availability and quality of medical help, and other factors.

The considerable overlap between fatal and nonfatal shootings is well captured by the observation of a Boston police investigator that the difference between the two events “is often only a matter of inches and luck—a lot of times a nonfatal shooting is just a failed homicide”.

In her in-depth examination of South Los Angeles homicides, investigative reporter Jill Leovy notes that there were approximately five nonfatal injury shootings for every one gun homicide and, given the similarity between the events, detectives called these nonfatal shootings “almoscides, for ‘almost homicides.’”

So the latest Texas mass shooter enlisted in the military but was kicked out due to mental health issues.

Which, however, didn't prevent him from buying an AR15 and using it as intended.

But you have to remember, unless there are bad guys with a gun there can be no good guy with a gun. And its important for civic duty to be that good guy and take out the bad guy.

I heard a Texas Republican politician recommending more mental health care.

Gee, I wonder what party is much more supportive of guns having much less regulation than driving a car, or voting?

But at the same time opposed to "socialist" healthcare measures.

Damn liberals always trying to vote and getting affordable healthcare. (Sarcasm)

The same politician said the power of prayer was the ultimate solution, because God would fix the problem. He blamed gun violence on people not having faith in prayer.

That's strange, I'm not religious but yet I've never been shot at. I wonder how that works? (inside that moron's head).

Also, despite going to a Catholic high school I can't remember any passage of the Bible that says you need to own and use an AK-47.

I believe stoning is the Bible's preferred method of defending ones self.

Also the secretly preferred method of many Trump supporters when it comes to dealing with anyone who disagrees with the BL (Beloved Leader).

I find it equally interesting that those who believe in prayer need a gun.

Owning a gun says right there and then they do NOT trust their god and they are "not having faith in prayer."

In the USA "God" is the greatest justification for doing evil.

I agree completely, half of them probably need to be institutionalised fairly promptly and a number of the rest would at least benefit from a dozen sessions with a good psychologist.

There was an extensive passage on the correct use of hand grenades though (Book of Armaments, Chapter 2, Verses 9-21).

In other news, Florida governor DeSantis removed all limits on carrying a concealed gun. Apparently filling out a form, attending a class, and getting regular training, while necessary to drive a car, were too onerous for a concealed gun.

Florida is a notorious "stand your ground" state where shooting at delivery people, and even lost strangers, looking for directions, is common.

From this week's shooting a 18 year old from New Mexico legally bought an assault weapon. A day before the shooting, he had gradated high school.

He walked a neighborhood, shooting 100 rounds, killing three women aged 73 to 79. He injured 6 others, including 2 police officers. He taunted the police to kill him.

New Mexico allows assault rifles, high capacity magazines, and bringing guns to demonstrations and the State Capitol grounds.

It does not have gun restrictions based on mental health, convicted domestic abusers, or even criminals carrying outstanding arrest warrants. It does not allow emergency restraining orders.

In New Mexico, if the gun is lost or stolen, they are not required to file a police report. Sales records are not sent to the police department. The is not any waiting period / "cooing off" time after purchasing a gun.

And the kicker, rated #16 in gun laws, which means twice as many states have less restrictions on guns.
