Absolutely damning to even think about selling their stake in Chorus.

We have a neutral, fair and well priced utility that was essential when it launched, is essential now and will be essential in the future.

The government should not be selling it's stake... Hell it should be investing more to solve the digital divide that still exists in remote countries.
"David Seymour said at the start of the year the government needs to take a hard look at what it owns and why. Today's announcement shows that message is finally sinking in," Stephenson said.
The government should go further, recycling more assets that don't serve the public into productive high-value infrastructure, he said.

Absolute insanity.

It's worth pointing out that these are securities which were issued to finance the UFB roll out. They are more akin to bonds rather than a true equity stake.

They are non-voting shares in Chrorus that don't appreciate and are to be bought back by Chorus at face value on a schedule over the next 10 years. They give the government no power to direct Chorus and were effectively an interest free loan to pay for the UFB rollout and the free installs for households.

If the Government can get an NPV positive transaction they are worth selling, if they can't they shouldn't.

Interest.co.nz has some more useful reporting on this. I really can't see how the sale would have any impact at all on Chorus as the network operator. They are privately held today and selling debt and non-voting shares that don't increase in value wouldn't change that.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/575813/voters-approval-for-leaders-of-national-and-labour-dropping-significantly-poll

Recent poll not great for Luxon...but not exactly fantastic for Hipkins, either.

https://archive.ph/posgR

Columnist Verity Johnson thinks Luxon keeps on putting his foot in his mouth and just doesn't get it:

He really cannot see how angry the country is. How much pain it’s in. How he’s got no idea what it's like to live through worse trading conditions for business than in the GFC. Or not be able to afford butter. And how you feel at 3am on Seek when you’re looking up dogwalking. Or how he’s really, really pissing people off.

What’s really interesting is I don’t know if he knows how furious he’s made people.

See, if you listen to the Beehive whispers or the commentators, people will say something like, ‘things will get better by the election’. Interest rates will go down, people will feel a bit richer, and they’ll re-elect National because everyone still hates Labour and there’s no one else but Luxon… the official whisper is he’ll get back in because we still hate Hipkins more.

But that’s old thinking. Maybe six months ago. But now? After repeatedly reminding us how out of touch he is? Stick your head out the window and smell the wind.

Related, the Spinoff notes that there might just be a causal link between the government making it much more difficult for people to get emergency housing and the explosion in the number of people living rough in the Auckland CBD. Who would have thought? Well, everyone, obviously. But forget about "because it's the right thing to do". It's as simple as "If they don't have somewhere to live, they'll live on the streets and be a nuisance to National voters instead."

What a load of bollocks

“We intend to make an announcement before the end of this year detailing our agreements and how we have saved the taxpayer billions by cancelling project iReX and returning to the no-nonsense solution we started in May 2020,” Mr Peters says.

https://www.beehive.govt.nz/release/new-zealand-secures-major-shipbuilder-new-ferries

In reality, I'd add the amount paid to cancel the previous orders as part of these costs too. Even if staying with the previous order could be construed as a "sunk cost fallacy".

https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360856102/another-political-poll-has-national-slipping-20s-left-bloc-holding-power

In the preferred prime minister stakes, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon was sitting on 21%, up one point, while Opposition leader Chris Hipkins was down one point but still ahead on 24%.

Okay, not exactly great for Hipkins, but yet another bad (worse) poll for Luxon - and he's the one who's in government.

I wonder how much longer this is going to keep going on for?

I for one hope Luxon stays, all the way up to the election.

Me too, would be awesome to see National become a one-term government. Hasn't happened for decades.

It's also unlikely to happen this time. The government are crap but the opposition, particularly the minor coalition partners, are worse. It'll likely go a bit like Australia this year where once the public gets a good look at the opposition they'll stick with the devil they know.

Any government that would rely on on TPM is going to be very short.

Hard to disagree. A couple of months ago I would have said that at least on Te Tiriti issues we were aligned, albeit they are still too activist to be a really constructive ally on some other things. But after Ferris' racist diatribe after the by-election and the way that has ultimately unfolded I'm now not sure even about that much.

And I know you're lumping the Green Party in there too but I would encourage you to actually read the policies rather than just write them off based on what Winston Peters says. I was involved in writing one of the newer policies and I can tell you from first-hand experience that we actually have to have the evidence to backup our opinions. I can also tell you that we had to drop a bunch of stuff out of our second-to-final draft because it was too long and detailed.

Green Party policies aren't just the reckons of dread-locked pot smokers. They are written by members with direct experience in the policy areas.

The Green Party is currently incompetent. It's been one mess after another this term and even issues that should be easy wins for them (The Cannabis Reform referendum and Gaza) have turned into sideshows about Swarbrick rather than debates on the issues.

Until they can go 6 months without a scandal I have zero faith in them being competent to implement a paper round.
