Trump's lawyer Alina Habba, once said “Somebody said to me 'Alina, would you rather be smart or pretty?' and I said 'Oh easy, pretty… I can fake being smart'"

Here's something else she said today.

"Elected officials have to do what's popular and sometimes not what's right. That's a problem.

That's I think why people get nervous with Trump.

He doesn't do what's popular or what's right.

badly stammering, flusteredErr...um..yeah...umm...

Or what I should say ... I should say he only does what's right! He doesn't do what's popular."

Technofreak:

most Americans are smart enough not to want a blathering imbecile as their leader.

Only around 50% of them don't.

Only about 60% of Americans voted in the last election and that was above average so in reality only around 25% of the population back him enough to be bothered vote.

Made this comment below one of his YouTube videos that have to deal with explaining dire political situation in USA.

@JakeBroe
About 30% of voting Americans have gone completely insane.  Another 17% are in denial and still voting against their own best interests.  MAGA is a cancer that is trying to destroy America and help Russia become a super power again.

Very moving portrayal of Biden's inherent decency, as compared to the inhumanity of the Orange Creature.

@freitasm Not sure when the thread title changed, but it's inaccurate.

I'm no fan of Trump, but he has not been convicted of rape or sexual assault. He wasn't criminally charged with either of these crimes as far as I'm aware. The allegations were bought against him in a civil suit. He was found not liable for rape, and although he was found liable for sexual assault this is very different than being convicted.

When Trump and the RNC talk about cutting bureaucracy, what they mean is cutting transparency, accountability, checks and balances.

Sunlight is the best disinfectant.

Politico: Bloodbath at Republican National Committee: Trump team slashes staff at committee

Donald Trump’s newly installed leadership team at the Republican National Committee, RNC, on Monday began the process of pushing out dozens of officials, according to two people close to the Trump campaign and the RNC.

All told, the expectation is that more than 60 RNC staffers who work across the political, communications and data departments will be let go. Those being asked to resign include five members of the senior staff, though the names were not made public. Additionally, some vendor contracts are expected to be cut.

In a letter to some political and data staff, Sean Cairncross, the RNC’s new chief operating officer, said that the new committee leadership was “in the process of evaluating the organization and staff to ensure the building is aligned” with its vision. “During this process, certain staff are being asked to resign and reapply for a position on the team.”

The overhaul is aimed at cutting, what one of the people described as, “bureaucracy” at the RNC. But the move also underscores the swiftness with which Trump’s operation is moving to take over the Republican Party’s operations after the former president all but clinched the party’s presidential nomination last week.

Trump’s campaign took over operational control of the RNC on Monday. On Friday, former North Carolina GOP Chair Michael Whatley was elected the RNC’s new chair, and Trump daughter-in-law Lara Trump was elected as co-chair.

"Third rail": Originally an additional rail supplying electric current in electric railway systems, like New York subway.

In slang it's any political issue so controversial that it is "charged" and "untouchable" to the extent that any politician or public official who dares to broach the subject will invariably suffer politically.

American retirees tend to be Republican, always vote, and won't let anyone touch their entitlement Medicare and Social Security ("we hate all lefty socialism, unless we're getting it.")

Politico: Donald Trump’s Unforced Error

For decades, there was one tried-and-true staple of presidential campaigns: The Democratic nominee would whack the Republican on proposals to reform, cut or privatize Social Security and other entitlements and reap the political rewards.

In the most evocative example of the genre, a 2012 attack ad from a progressive advocacy group showed a character strongly resembling Paul Ryan literally pushing a grandmother in a wheelchair off a cliff.
...
Thanks to an unforced error, Trump has effectively opened the 2024 general election campaign with a return to the third rail he sought to abandon almost a decade ago. Asked in a CNBC interview Monday whether he’d changed his outlook on how to handle entitlements, Trump argued in a word salad-heavy answer that “there is a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting and also the theft and the bad management of entitlements.”

It’s not obvious from his answer whether he’s had a material change of heart on Social Security, because it’s not obvious what he means at all.
...
His campaign immediately recognized he had stepped on a land mine. A campaign spokesperson tried some cleanup on Monday, arguing that Trump will “continue to strongly protect Social Security and Medicare in his second term.”

By then, though, it was too late. Trump suddenly found himself on the defensive, in the position so many prior GOP nominees have been in. He had given up the tactical advantage he had used to swamp his GOP rivals in the 2016 primary, back when he recognized that, when it came to entitlement reform, the only winning move is not to play.

Washington Post: How Donald Trump switched to defending TikTok
...
Trump’s growing antipathy toward Zuckerberg — as well as advocacy and lobbying from several former administration and campaign officials tied to a GOP billionaire with a big financial stake in TikTok parent company ByteDance — helps illuminate the former president’s position on the video-sharing app.
...
Lately, he’s signaled opposition to fast-moving House legislation that targets TikTok.

Last week, the former president argued that a TikTok ban would primarily help Zuckerberg and Meta. He appeared to reiterate his opposition to a TikTok ban in an interview on Monday.
...
On CNBC, Trump said that he believes TikTok is a national security threat. But, he added, “You ban TikTok, Facebook and others, but mostly Facebook, will be a big beneficiary. And I think Facebook has been very dishonest. I think Facebook has been very bad for our country, especially when it comes to elections.”
...
Trump’s comments on TikTok have had immediate reverberations on Capitol Hill, where Republicans who had for years called for prohibiting the app over concerns that ByteDance might be controlled by Chinese authorities were torn between their loyalty to the former president and their prior positions.

The Guardian: Ex-Trump employee says ‘anybody’ could access Mar-a-Lago rooms where records were stored
...
Trump has pleaded not guilty to the indictment charging him with improperly retaining government secrets after he left the Oval Office. The charges are among more than 90 counts pending against him in a series of criminal cases that also accuse him of subverting his 2020 electoral defeat and of making hush-money payments.

Despite his denial of wrongdoing, Butler on Monday made it a point to illustrate just how unsecured the government secrets in question were at Trump’s Florida property.

“There were definitely a lot of gaps where people could get in very easily,” Butler said.

Butler said he used to oversee check-ins with Mar-a-Lago valets before leaving his job in November 2022. And he described how easily he could have used a master key to access the ballroom, bathroom and storage room where Trump kept the records that resulted in criminal charges against him, though Butler said at least some of those areas were guarded.

“I could’ve went and got a master key to all the rooms, you know, for check-ins,” Butler recounted to Collins. “I mean, feasibly at night anybody could.”

Butler has not been charged in the case. But he told CNN he has years of text messages to corroborate the position he once held in Trump’s circle and is willing to testify.

Nauta and the Mar-a-Lago maintenance supervisor Carlos De Oliveira have been charged with conspiracy to obstruct justice. Butler said he understood De Oliveira helped load up a car with the boxes of documents that Butler and Nauta then unloaded on to the plane that flew them away in June 2022.

Ah yes, the first steps in bringing the Führerprinzip to the US:

Principles of Obedience, The Fuhrerprinzip

1. Hitler was the sole authority within the party

2. Hitler will not share power with anyone else within or outside of the party.

3. Hitler’s decision is final

4. Power was not devolved to others – Hitler was the guardian of power, acting in Germany’s best interests.

5. Others would act out and achieve his aims – this was called acting in the will of the Fuhrer. Many of Hitler’s ideas were rarely set out on paper and so through this vague platform many of his Generals and ministers created what they felt was what he wanted.

6. He would only intervene in the party when necessary – the natural running of the party will be managed by others taking his direct orders

7. (From 1926) The party will follow the 25-point charter

8. Appeal for the party was manifestly interlinked with attraction to the party – attraction to success and the future Germany.

The NY Times - Judge Quashes Six Charges in Georgia Election Case Against Trump

13 March 2024

In a surprise move on Wednesday, a judge in Atlanta quashed six of the charges against former President Donald J. Trump and his allies in the sprawling Georgia election interference case, including one related to a call that Mr. Trump made to pressure Georgia’s secretary of state in early January 2021.

The judge, Scott McAfee of Fulton Superior Court, left intact the rest of the racketeering indictment, which initially included 41 counts.

The ruling was not related to a defense effort to disqualify Fani T. Willis, the district attorney of Fulton County, Ga., who is leading the case. A ruling on that matter, which has made headlines for weeks after it was revealed that Ms. Willis had engaged in a romantic relationship with another prosecutor, is expected by the end of the week.

I would have thought the phone call part would have been the strongest part of the case, but it looks like the actual charges were "too generic", per Politico.
