its a bit of a stacked system having the speaker appointed from the governing party, Mallard as speaker? That was like a bad joke. Brownlee as you say is at least trying. The whole "naming in the house" or being ejected for a period is a bit weak. Should be $ fines, money put towards a charity of a neutral speakers choosing (or similar). Fine to be paid personally by the offender.

Loss of voting rights for 1 week....

THAT would get the whips into a tizzy.

Now Labour has announced its first policy - ring fencing income from SOE's and investing it in private businesses to keep jobs in NZ.

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/labour-to-unveil-first-major-economic-policy-ahead-of-2026-election/S5PY4XKFGVHSVJAPULWZG5JCQY/

Really not sure how to take this one, seems well intentioned, the devil will ofcourse be in the detail. The skeptic in me thinks though if National had proposed a policy of his nature, it would be shouted down as National stealing tax-payers money to funnel money to their "rich business mates". Wonder what Labour's requirements will be for which entities receive the money?

A sovereign wealth fund isn’t a bad idea but this isn’t a real policy

I really have no idea why they have launched this now. They haven’t released any detail and clearly haven’t fully developed the policy.

It’s the type of policy that is prone for a Phil Goff “Show me the money” moment.

I know the topic of the thread is National but I'm also keen to see how they plug the gap of foregone dividends, and what implications that might have for tax policy.

A very calm, rational interview by Bryan Bruce talking about the upcoming strikes tomorrow by Whangarei Hospital's own Dr. Payinda.

Some protests are being called off tomorrow due to the poor weather but the strike is still going ahead.

I can only assume the government's top negotiator has just awoken from 60 years of Aliens-style cryosleep. The striker's demands seem pretty clear to anyone who has been awake at any time in the last 18 months.

And in other news, Christopher Luxon is entitled to have his rates valuation dropped on request to save on his rates bill.

It's one of those things where he's actually done nothing wrong but it's politically inept. It's the housing allowance thing all over again.

Yep. Perfectly legal but clueless when everyone else who doesn't own an "overvalued" mansion on Waiheke can't just ask the council to give them an $8000 discount.

If you read the full article it's one of 47 properties where the council clearly screwed up the valuation. There were 47 applications and all 47 got accepted. The decreases in valuation were between $900k and $5.8 million. The council has also told the owners of the other properties on the beach they may revalue their properties.

Regardless it looks bad and continues the image of him being out of touch.

Luxon government annoyed that uppity dropkicks and bottom feeders flood their big beautiful bills with overwhelmingly opposing submissions, mull the usual tactic of having to prove your identity before you can comment in order to keep it bit quieter in the peanut gallery.

The MP in charge of handling record-breaking submissions on the controversial Treaty principles bill says politicians may need to think about requiring proof of identity or citizenship if a surge in feedback is not kept under control.

Or you could just not keep passing laws that are overwhelmingly against what the people want. Then we wouldn't have to flood the select committee with people saying no.

“While it is natural for controversial legislation to draw wider engagement, the rise of coordinated, largely online campaigns risks undermining the committee’s ability to identify and consider substantive, good-faith submissions.”

Coordinated campaigns? In my politics!? Such a thing has never been heard of before ever in all of history!! I tell you what he's going to be absolutely livid when someone finally tells him he's a member of the New Zealand National Party.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/576678/school-lunch-scheme-far-from-fixed-after-eight-months

"You always need to be changing up the menu a little bit, giving them something different. I think this week we've got four mince meals."

I had forgotten about this, but despite things not really being "fixed" (as he claimed they would be by this point), I guess Seymour has bigger fish to fry now? 🤷‍♂️
