The NY Times - Biden Shrinks Trump’s Edge in Latest Times/Siena Poll

The president’s popularity has ticked up slightly, though voters still view Donald J. Trump more favorably and have dour views of the economy.

EDIT

Mencken, the curmudgeonly Sage of Baltimore:

"No one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public."

"Every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under."

It's going to be a close election, no doubt about it. I just really, really hope Trump doesn't prevail.

Trump's 2017 tax cuts are still delivering:
Jacobin: In 2023, Pfizer made more than $27 billion in revenue and paid zero federal income tax. Like many other large US companies, it took advantage of Donald Trump’s 2017 tax law, which widened existing loopholes and set off a tax-avoidance bonanza.

“The argument was there are all these unused offshore dollars that could be put to work investing in the US if we just provided a tax holiday,”

That sounds familiar.

Trump promising to go even further:

CNN: Wealthy donors forked over a record $50.5 million at a recent fundraising dinner for former President Donald Trump, but they could also reap big benefits if he returns to the White House.

At the dinner, hosted by billionaire investor John Paulson, Trump told the crowd that one of his core issues for a second term would be extending the sweeping tax cuts that congressional Republicans approved in 2017.

The NY Times - Trump Says He Intends to Testify in His Manhattan Criminal Case

12 April 2024

Donald J. Trump, having failed to fend off a criminal trial in Manhattan that begins on Monday, said that he planned to testify in the case stemming from a hush-money payment to a porn star. ...

I’m testifying. I tell the truth.”  ... “I mean, all I can do is tell the truth. And the truth is that there’s no case. They have no case.”

This is probably good news for the prosecution.  ☺️

He can now perjure himself all the way to prison.

And once his bowels are thoroughly evacuated he can go back to lying under oath!

In a close election it's only the five or so swing states that matter. The rest are irrelevant.

So you have a handful of swing states that can overwhelm the will of the rest of the country, an electoral college that doesn't reflect the popular vote, a House of Representatives that can be hijacked by a demented loudmouth who exhalts ignorance and is functionally illiterate, judges beholden to whoever appoints them, politicians who couldn't beat a monkey on an IQ test, and State legislatures that place more value on a fertilised egg than a wrongly condemned death row prisoner. American exceptionalism sure is exceptional!

I wonder if America would be a better place (politically) if they embraced something like MMP rather than FPP?

Problem is, I can imagine there would be a lot of resistance to it - mostly Republican - for a bill like that to go anywhere near the President's desk for sign-off.

They would be better off if they had an electoral body that stopped voter de-registration, gerrymandering , ensured equity in spacing of election booths, etc.

I.e. have the free and fair elections that they claim other countries also do not have.

And then yes, MMP.

https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2024/4/12/2234671/-Pundits-might-be-dismissing-Trump-s-hush-money-case-but-voters-aren-t

I think if Trump were to lose one just of his cases (even the hush money one) that it would signal to voters that he's not quite the indestructible force they've been lead to believe he is.

The question is why do so few USA citizens support Biden, given the alternative ? The USA economy does not seem to bad (compared to NZ), is it the support of Israel actions in Palestine?

And Biden seems to have made less blunders in speech and action recently, or what ?
