Rikkitic:

I genuinely believe that if Trump wins, it means the end of Western liberal democracy.

I think it's more like a re-arranging of the chess pieces on the board. America is no longer the worlds sheriff. They gave up that position when they lost in Vietnam and they have been in an accelerating decline ever since.

There are plenty of countries with centrist governments in Europe, some maybe right, some maybe left and that's not likely to change. Similarly here, Australia and Canada. Even our current government is pretty close to the middle ground. Countries sometimes try extremism (eg Brazil and Bolsinaro) but then revert to a more moderate government. The USA will have less and less influence as their decline continues.

As long as they have the largest nuclear armed military in the world the US Dollar will control the global economy. With control of the global financial markets they can cripple small countries with the flick of a sanction, and wave the big ones off with another Minuteman III test launch. Absent some unforeseeable sudden collapse into anarchy it will be many decades before you can ignore the US.

It's vaguely possible that Trump 2.0 might precipitate such a sudden collapse, but I really don't think it likely.

America's economic and military power means its influence extends everywhere. As democratic institutions fade there, they will also fade in Europe and other places. It's pretty hard standing up for a principle when you are the only one doing it. Trade is a powerful weapon and someone like Trump would not hesitate to use it as one.

Trump has 4 years at the most and there is nobody like him to carry on in the same vein. It's all entirely personal with him. He doesn't really understand or care about the economy, world affairs, the rights of minorities etc etc. He just wants to be called President.

If he tries to stay in power after his 4 years are up it will either be a) he succeeds and many states will leave the union so effectively the end of the USA or b) he fails and the next guy takes over and Trump becomes just a small blot in history.

Each moment brings us closer to the inevitable, whether you're poor or someone who pays millions obsessing on living longer.

It's still 50/50 as to whether RFK Jr will be 2024's Ralph Nader or Ross Perot.

Democrats are worried. But will RFK Jr take more votes away from Trump?

"Create a society that values material things above all else. Strip it of industry. Raise taxes for the poor and reduce them for the rich and for corporations. Prop up failed financial institutions with public money. Ask for more tax, while vastly reducing public services. Put adverts everywhere, regardless of people's ability to afford the things they advertise. Allow the cost of food and housing to eclipse people's ability to pay for them. Trump being Trump the outcome will be unpredictable. If he wins a second term and dies in office it could be crazy. If he doesn't then a little less crazy but maybe still some unpredictability.

That will depend who his Vice President is - but it won't be Mike Pence, who (despite all his faults) at least had some semblance of how to run a government.

Further to what I mentioned about RFK Jr, I just realised he's come out strongly in favour of Netanyahu on the Israel-Gaza war, despite his history of antisemitic remarks. He certainly won't be winning terribly much support from the US campus protesters.

https://www.thebulwark.com/p/reading-trumps-mind >> a satirical look at what's (probably) running through Trump's mind at the moment. Very witty 😀

The NY Times - Delay, Delay, Delay  (unlocked link)

How Donald Trump has slowed the cases against him.

29 April

This short article shares the blame 3 ways:

1. Republican senators
2. Democratic prosecutors
3. Republican justices

Conclusion:

"All these decisions - by senators, prosecutors and justices - have played into Trump’s central legal strategy: delay. It’s a strategy he used to fight investigations during his business career, and it seems to have worked again in this campaign."

I recommend this opinion piece.

I can't imagine a more humiliating end to a political career than losing an election to Donald Trump.

If he did get in again a lot of republican politicians would need new careers once he starts settling scores.

In view of the behaviour of Donald Trump in particular and Republicans in general, what happens if Biden loses the popular vote but wins the electoral college? Would they accept such an outcome? Would it mean blood in the streets?
