The answer has to be in the quality of the candidates, irrespective of any personal character attributes they may have (race, sex, orientation etc etc) - and that also applies to someone that may be a straight white male. Unfortunately, thats not how the current environment works. If you don't look like a particular group, you can't possibly represent them, but if you do look like a particular group, you can't possibly represent anyone else.

The answer also has to be in a long term strategic plan. It was noted above about the healthcare focussing on savings now, not savings down the track, but we don't judge "down the track" and 3 years isn't nearly enough time for a Govt of any flavour to have an impact on the now and the future at the same time. Think (or act) strategically and you aren't doing enough for the needs of the day.

Luxon's Government has been a very 'one note' affair.
Progress through cuts and elimination of Government departments workers.
Plus budget constraints down through the whole system in Healthcare, Education, Infrastructure.

Perchance have cuts also weakened our Biosecurity vigilance and response again.

A deadly European hornet has reached NZ – we can all help stop its spread

People can die from hornet stings. Yellow-legged hornets will aggressively defend their nests and have been known to attack people even from hundreds of meters away.

In parts of Europe, they are now considered one of the most common causes of anaphylaxis, with multiple stings potentially leading to multi-organ failure. There have also been reports of eye injuries, particularly when well-meaning people attempt to destroy nests. Hornets can spray venom into eyes through the visors of beekeeping suits.

Too many party leaders in Parliament (looking at you, Seymour and Winston) with their own personal agendas (culture wars, etc) that don't add anything but certainly excite their base.

Meanwhile they both run rings around a clueless Luxon and he in turn reminds us that he used to run an airline, like that's somehow relevant to running a government 🙄

So what you're saying is, you want to return to a two-party system where you can vote red or blue and it literally doesn't matter because they are the same party, going to the same place, with the same policy, always and forever amen, and anybody who does not want to go to that place (on either side) can f*** off and move some place else?

What I am saying is that they are all painted the same, all sing to their own congregation who shout praises about their leaders, singling out one or two because you disagree with their style or policies is too narrow focused.

There has also been the mention about the tail wagging the dog (with Seymour / Peters dictating to Luxon), I would argue that exactly the same thing will happen if there is a Labour/Greens /TPM coalition, there will be bottom lines that neither the greens nor TPM will want to give up. The only difference will be in how you perceive these bottom lines. If they align with your political views, then its all part of a coalition working well, if they don't (as with many of the Act / NZF policies), then its the tail wagging the dog. Exactly the same principal.

Would a first past the post Govt do any better (or worse) for NZ, who knows. It keeps the fringes away from the baubles of power, but again, that could be a good thing if you don't agree with their policies.....

TPM clearly has a pretty narrow appeal, but the others - Green, ACT and NZF - all poll around the 10-15% range at the moment. Collectively, that's somewhere around 40% of the electorate. Hardly a "fringe".

I think you'd agree that both Act and the Greens operate near the fringes of their respective sides of the political line

I completely agree they are both further right or left than the National or Labour parties. Having said that, although I obviously can't speak for ACT, I can tell you from personal experience as one of the authors of the Disaster Management policy, that all the Green Party policies are backed up with evidence. Indeed, we were slightly grumpy (though we totally get why) that we had to cut a bunch of stuff out of the final policy because it was too long and detailed.

"Too much detail with supporting evidence" isn't really fringe in my opinion, but yes I concede they are further left/right than the big two.

And in other news, I see unemployment is again increasing - 160k out of work

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/new-data-due-today-unemployment-tipped-to-hit-8-year-high/JZ3WQ77ESBBWVMNBJPOB2QSOEM/

I know from recent times when I've looked on seek, there was less than 2000 jobs in Christchurch, NZs 2nd largest city with a population of 412k or so people. Those aren't good odds if we have our proportion of that 160k or about 8k people looking for less than 2k jobs.

Que incoming soundbite from National

You mean the economy is performing how it was expected to perform when you left office? (Source pre election update and stats NZ gdp)

So, at best the Luxon government has had no effect on the economy.

Worst. It was supposed to be $438 billion, it's actually $435 billion.

Luxon is worst than the bad forecast that was supposed to be a gotcha....

Make glib comments if you want, it's pretty hypocritical.
