In NZF and ACT it's dastardly Maoris and Unions, in the Greens it's the evil pakeha hetrosexual men and for TPM it's all the fault of the white man. They are all very happy to have someone to blame as it gets their base jazzed up and excited. It creates a very polarised environment but it is what it is.

You see it on here blaming everything on National when 95% of their policies are the same as Labours policies. The difference between the major parties are really very small as they are both targeting the mainstream voter.

Tsk, I am an evil pakeha heterosexual man. I'm not sure if it makes me more or less evil given that I am also an Australian immigrant. :-D

More, thats a given :)

Watching Chloe Swarbrick and David Seymour on NZHearald now

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/video/herald-now/green-and-act-leaders-face-off-on-herald-now/SFMCIJUHBHAUZ55GXV7YLZGTDY/

This is how political issues should be debated, for the most part the two leaders were respectful of each other, they debated the issues not the person. When Chloe drops the hyperbole and emotion and presents arguments in a thoughtful way, she presents very well.

Whilst they don't align politically in almost any way, I get the feeling there is a certain level of respect between the two.

Seymour keeps going ahead but no word on fixes for the existing experience.

Most deliveries are on time now, that's all he gives a crap about. Variety? Nutritional value? Unimportant, as long as it's delivered on time (whatever it is) it's all good and "sorted" (in his eyes) 🙄

They actually seem to get on quite well when not trying to score points off each other. This Not-So-Serious Political Q&A video from 4 years ago shows them both in fine form.

Unrestricted use of urgency is corrosive to democracy, and should be reserved for genuine emergencies. Not that Sir Geoffrey Palmer has any particular government in mind, of course.

Palmer, who as Attorney-General was responsible for the creation of the Constitution Act in 1986, told Parliament’s standing orders committee that law should be changed to put restrictions on the use of urgency, limiting it to genuine emergencies “and not merely because the Government is in a hurry”.

MPs faced pressure to pass increasing amounts of legislation without sufficient time to debate it, which damaged both the length and quality of debate as well as public confidence in the process.

“I watched the Parliament when it was debating the recent changes to voting, and the whole debate took an hour – that is not a democratic process, that is a shambles, and I think the Parliament has to consider its own reputation.

“Parliament has been reduced in public esteem, gradually but surely, and for that to be arrested, the processes adopted here have to be authentically democratic, and they’re not because of the strains you are under.”

The select committee process was also under strain, with submitters lucky to be given five or 10 minutes to share their views and answer questions from MPs: “That is not scrutiny, that’s going through the motions,” Palmer said.

The way the current government rammed through changes without public consultation in the first few months of their term (a lot of it undoing things that the previous government had done) was a disgrace. Unless something is done about it then I think this will become the norm, with each successive government quickly undoing things that they don't like without allowing the public or the various ministries to have any say.

If the current Standing Orders review doesn't put a serious handbrake on the use of urgency in a way that can't be easily overridden then the Luxon government's term spending 80% of their effort on ramming through repeals of everything the other team did, 10% on culture war bulls*** that the public clearly told them they didn't want, and 10% on kicking people when they were already down (e.g. now Mr. Seven Houses wants to ban homelessness in Auckland, and Other Brown agrees they should be moved to "the countryside") will be looked back upon fondly as a paragon of well-considered legislative programs.

Democracy is dissolving under Luxon's watch and he does not give a flying function because it meant he got to be Prime Minister, as he was plainly ordained by our Lord and Saviour John Key to be.

Which public assets does Seymour want to sell off (and don't get me started on Simeon Brown cozying up to Serco for privatisation of health)?

From the article, his top 10 are:

  • QV
  • Pamu Landcorp
  • AsureQuality
  • Kordia
  • Kiwibank
  • Mercury, Median, Genesis
  • TVNZ
  • NZ Post

What a brilliant idea privatising Kordia would be. What boatie wouldn't want to know that when their boat was sinking the emergency radio was being monitored by a company who cut so many corners the service was practically spherical?

QV is a bit of a red herring to sell off because it has little relative value. They want to sell of their Chorus stake too. NZs news media is also so reduced and poor quality these days I am not sure selling off tvnz is the best idea. Also they refer now to out as asset recycling , which is what their spin doctors have come up with because it doesn’t sound as bad as asset sales. But National seem to have no idea what to do and are instead taking credit for the emergency low interest rates cutting people’s mortgage payments and Costco setting up a second store even though that was planned years ago

Assets aren’t being sold while Winston is in power. This is a performative part of the election campaign rather than something anyone is serious about.

Most of the assets listed are relatively worthless now so it’s not like it’s going to raise any money.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/579035/government-performance-rating-hits-new-low-in-survey

Public ratings of government performance have reached another new low in the latest IPSOS Issues Monitor survey.

The government rating of 3.9 out of 10 is the lowest since the survey began in September 2017, and reflects about 45 percent of respondents giving between 0 and 3.

Another 31 percent gave a rating of 4-6, while 23 percent gave 7-10, and 2 percent said they didn't know.

I guess Mr-I'm-rich-and-sorted will be all good whenever he leaves office though, right?

I think they're a bit rattled though. When Labour announced their largely detail-free investment fund policy a week or so ago, National immediately panicked and fell back on ol' faithful, and reminded us about moar roads, everyone!

Another distraction from their current poor polling (see my post above)?: https://www.1news.co.nz/2025/11/17/plans-for-new-wellington-tunnels-sh1-upgrades-revealed/

And speaking of their beloved roads and more cars, how about this? https://www.stuff.co.nz/motoring/360888930/its-about-get-cheaper-import-dirty-cars-climate-impact-negligible
