I tried to force myself to watch this debate, but only managed a few minutes at a time.

It was painful to watch, and probably a disaster for Biden.

Trump stood up and lied outrageously with complete self-assurance, as usual.

Biden was hard to hear, indecisive, and looked as though he could drop dead at any moment (he reportedly has a "cold").

God Help America.

I'm feeling very depressed.  🤧

Lots of fact checks at bottom of article

NBC News: Biden-Trump 2024 debate live updates: Biden stumbles while Trump fires off falsehoods

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump held their first presidential debate of the cycle tonight in Atlanta. The two candidates were in a studio without an audience.

Biden struggled at times, stumbling over answers with a raspy voice — a campaign aide said he has a cold — and adding fodder to concerns about his age and mental fitness. Near the halfway mark, Biden started gaining his footing again, mocking Trump's physical fitness and calling him a "whiner" and a "loser."

Trump, meanwhile, offered numerous falsehoods and misleading statements in his responses. He hammered
Biden on immigration and the border, even when he was asked about other issues. And he repeatedly dodged questions about whether he would accept the results of the election.

Both candidates also hurled personal insults at each other, with Biden hitting Trump for his alleged affair with adult film star Stormy Daniels and Trump calling Biden a "complainer" and the "worst president" in American history.

Edited to add: I'm not actually quoting Fox there, just pointing out how they're likely to cover it.

Similar thing over at Breitbart, just more blatant lying (especially LOL at the first two headlines):

A version I've heard is that Biden has been prepping for the debate by visiting care facilities and arguing with dementia patients.

Thought you were meaning Biden was getting practice with people of Trumps ability. Seems a fair idea to me. 😇👍

I'm feeling closer to how past UK citizens felt when Boris Johnson was replaced by Liz Truss.

Still Trump is doddering old man sitting on his front porch with a loaded shotgun, an itchy trigger finger and nothing to lose, and Biden is a a doddering old man watching B&W films like “Twelve O’Clock High” (1949) and "The Dam Busters" (1955) on his VCR, and talking about the good old days.

The Guardian: Biden’s poor performance and Trump’s lies: four key takeaways from the debate

The Twitter account, known by the handle @LibsofTikTok, has nearly 3 million followers as of February 2024 and has become influential among American conservatives and the political right. Libs of TikTok's social-media accounts have received several temporary suspensions and a permanent suspension from TikTok.

Donald Trump has endorsed "Libs of TikTok" several times. He even hosted a wine-and-dine event at his Mar-a-Lago estate for the conservative influencers behind Libs of TikTok (and The Babylon Bee) at his Mar-a-Lago estate .

And of course for Elon Musk any free speech is good (as long as it's right wing speech).

NBC News: After Libs of TikTok posted, at least 21 bomb threats followed
...
NBC News identified 33 instances, starting in November 2020, when people or institutions singled out by Libs of TikTok later reported bomb threats or other violent intimidation. The threats, which on average came several days after tweets from Libs of TikTok, targeted schools, libraries, hospitals, small businesses and elected officials in 16 states, Washington, D.C., and the Canadian province of Ontario. Twenty-one of the 33 threats were bomb threats, which most commonly targeted schools and were made via email.

NBC News emailed Raichik on Monday seeking comment on the threats. She did not respond directly, but said in a post on X that NBC News was working on a “hit piece.”

“They do it to try to paint me as an extremist to discredit me. This ‘b*mb threat’ narrative is really getting old,” she wrote, adding a yawning-face emoji.

The scream ...

The NY Times - Opinion  - Joe Biden Is a Good Man and a Good President. He Must Bow Out of the Race.

28 June 2024

I watched the Biden-Trump debate alone in a hotel room, and it made me weep. I cannot remember a more heartbreaking moment in American presidential campaign politics in my lifetime, precisely because of what it revealed: Joe Biden, a good man and a good president, has no business running for re-election.

And Donald Trump, a malicious man and a petty president, has learned nothing and forgotten nothing. He is the same fire hose of lies he always was, obsessed with his grievances - nowhere close to what it will take for America to lead in the 21st century. ...

To give America the greatest shot possible of deterring the Trump threat in November, the president has to come forward and declare that he will not be running for re-election and is releasing all of his delegates for the Democratic National Convention.

EDIT

... and in the same issue of The Times :

The NY Times - First the Debate, Then a Supreme Court Ruling: Trump’s Big 24 Hours

28 June 2024

The former president and his team were still basking in the glow of Democratic recriminations, hand-wringing and second-guessing on Friday morning over Mr. Biden’s lackluster showing, when the Supreme Court handed Mr. Trump a second political gift in less than 24 hours.

The high court ruled that prosecutors had overstepped in their use of an obstruction law to charge a rioter who had stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

The decision could have sweeping consequences for hundreds of defendants charged with crimes that day.

Of course, the most prominent person indicted partly on an obstruction charge is Mr. Trump himself, though his case could continue even after the narrowing of the law.

“BIG WIN!” Mr. Trump posted on his social media site, Truth Social, after the court ruling.

The Teflon Don has friends in high places.

He is a Clear And Present Danger.   👺
