The Washington Post - The 5-Minute Fix

Below are some takeaways from the ruling.  [headings only]

1. It’s a clear victory for Trump

2. It’s likely to delay Trump’s case beyond the 2024 election

3. Liberal justices warned of dire consequences, a ‘king above the law’

4. The hits keep coming for panicky Democrats

Let's hope Judge Merchan takes note and sends him directly to jail for several years next week. That case is free and clear given it all happened before he was elected the first time round.

The USA's last great hope. Let's hope the Judge has large enough cojones.

Reality Check:  If Trump is sentenced to jail, he will inevitably appeal (as usual) and delay imprisonment for months or years - meanwhile playing the 'victim' (as usual).   😦

If Trump is re-elected, Judge Merchan may have a tragic 'accident'.

As long as he has to appeal from jail that will slow him down. To get out of jail after he's been put in he would need the state appeals courts to agree - and we have already seen that they are not sympathetic to him. Given what the federal Supreme Court just did after the NY state highest court (Appellate Division?) said about immunity, they are even less likely to give him the benefit of the doubt than they previously were.

If Trump is re-elected he will just pardon himself. There wasn't a clear answer on whether he could do this last time it came up when he was President. I don't imagine that will stop him if it history repeats.

Commentators are saying it's now up to lower courts to determine if Trump's Jan 6th speech was an "official act" or a speech given in a personal capacity, if that is relevant.

America is totally broken. I feel so upset about this, for Americans with a brain in their head, and for the world that is influenced by American decisions.

God help us if the stupid maga idiots vote him in.

As an aside, imagine what the jurors and witnesses feel after risking their lives to do their duty in Trumps trial.

I think they and a whole pile of others should be preparing to leave the USA in a hurry if Trump wins.

If its not Trump getting revenge it will be his unhinged supporters.

Worse, even if Trump fails to win, the door to a despotic leader has been opened.

The WORLD should look carefully and make serious efforts to remove reliance on the USA for trade, technology etc.

Technically true, but that won't stop Trump now. He was just handed a literal get-out-of-jail-free card. All he has to do is call walking out of the cell an official act, and nobody who doesn't want to land in prison themselves can tell him no anymore.

EDIT - I believe the only accountability he's going to get is whatever Merchan hands him between the 11th of July and inauguration day. And unless that accountability is jail and/or some forced humiliating public service like picking up garbage on the side of the road, then it's no accountability at all. He'll never pay a fine or surrender any other property in lieu, and being forced to stay at home in Mar a Lago won't be any sort of penalty.

Again wrong, he has zero jurisdiction in state prisons, he can NOT walk out.
This is why the state prosecutions have been so important, the president, the US Supreme Court, the Justice Department have exactly ZERO say in the matter.

No, again - you're thinking about this from the perspective of those rules actually mattering.

The Supreme Court just said the president is absolutely immune to prosecution for any official act and also if you want to try to argue that any particular act is NOT "official" then you have argue it to a trial judge with both hands tied behind your back because none of your evidence is allowed to be used. And during that whole process, the President is free to interfere in any way using the same immunity, and effectively make it impossible for you to ever get an answer.

Trump can order the army to come in and bust him out of jail. If they refuse, he will keep ordering people until he finds someone who complies because he can simply threaten anyone who doesn't with any punishment that he wants, regardless of whether it is illegal or not because once again we circle back to nobody can stop him because as long as it's "official" then he is immune.

The rules don't matter anymore. The Supreme Court just guaranteed it.

But he has NOT been done under federal laws for a variety of his crimes.

Tax Fraud, Rape, even the election interference because states run the election processes.

Trump can not order the army to free him, or if he does try that will trigger a civil war with potentially him being the 1st casualty.
