kingdragonfly: “Dog whistles” is a popular technique by right-wingers like Trump and Musk.

They've been popular in the US right for a long time.  One widespread example was the discussion around busing during segregation, which on the surface was just about providing school buses for children, but which every southerner knew meant having nasty black children at their nice all-white schools.  Or at least the threat thereof when a southern politician mentioned it.  Nixon was a master at this with his Southern strategy, appealing to racist white southerners which made it relatively easy to win the presidency if you only needed to worry about remaining non-southern states to get elected.

This news item is odd. Judge Aileen M. Cannon is Trump's cheerleader, and her judgements have been perverting justice.

Yet in this specific ruling on Trump's minion, she wrote something concise and coherent. In other words, it look like it was written by professional judge.

However Trump has submitted the same motion. Let's see how it goes.

New York Times: Judge Denies Effort by Trump Co-Defendant to Have Charges Dismissed

The federal judge overseeing former President Donald J. Trump’s classified documents case on Saturday rejected an effort by one of his co-defendants to have the charges he is facing dismissed by claiming that he was the victim of a vindictive prosecution by the government.

The co-defendant, Walt Nauta, who works as a personal aide to Mr. Trump, had accused prosecutors in the office of the special counsel, Jack Smith, of unfairly indicting him because he declined to help their efforts to build a case against the former president by testifying against him in front of a grand jury.

Mr. Nauta’s lawyer, Stanley Woodward Jr., also claimed that at a meeting at the Justice Department two years ago, prosecutors had threatened to derail a judgeship he was seeking if he did not prevail on his client to turn on Mr. Trump.

But in an order issued on Saturday night, Judge Aileen M. Cannon rejected those arguments, ruling that even though Mr. Nauta had refused to provide testimony against Mr. Trump, there was “no evidence suggesting that charges were brought to punish him for doing so.”
....
Mr. Trump has filed his own vindictive prosecution motion against Mr. Smith and his team, accusing them of bringing the charges in the case in a partisan effort to derail his presidential campaign. The motion also accused the government of unfairly targeting Mr. Trump when other public figures who have been found in possession of classified documents — among them President Biden — were never indicted.

Judge Cannon has not yet ruled on Mr. Trump’s motion, but noted in her order on Saturday that her decision to reject Mr. Nauta’s motion “shall not be construed as commenting on the merits” of the former president’s claims.

AP News: Can you ‘Trump-proof’ NATO? As Biden falters, Europeans look to safeguard the military alliance

Growing skepticism about President Joe Biden’s reelection chances has European leaders heading to the NATO summit in Washington confronting the prospect that the military alliance’s most prominent critic, Donald Trump, may return to power over its mightiest military.

NATO — made up of 32 European and North American allies committed to defending one another from armed attack — will stress strength through solidarity as it celebrates its 75th anniversary during the summit starting Tuesday. Event host Biden, who pulled allies into a global network to help Ukraine fight off Russia’s invasion, has called the alliance the most unified it has ever been.

But behind the scenes, a dominant topic will be preparing for possible division, as the power of far-right forces unfriendly to NATO grows in the U.S. and other countries, including France, raising concerns about how strong support will stay for the alliance and the military aid that its members send to Ukraine.

Its crazy the amount of people in the US complaining about the unemployment rate, the price of petrol (we pay near double), inflation which has come down.

But for me its scary the amount of people who support a criminal who they for some reason believe was a Commerce mastermind. Reality TV seems to seem "real" to the US psyche. Not the bunkruptcies, failed projects, and using other peoples money to do these projects. Then the method of getting his name in for this TV show was super dodgy. Imagine if it had been a real commerce CEO or similar, we wouldnt be in this position now.

He has no policies out P25. He wants to Tarriff all Ch imports, which will obviously sky rocket inflation and possibly have a major impact on the stock exchange. and to deport 11 million people, is obviously cause mass unemployment, civil infrastructure break downs, food to the table and once again another compounding cost of living inflation.

I was watching this lady on YT, an influencer, with a video targeting young women about just how hard it is to get a job and things were better under Trump (even though these people were no adults at that point). The ones complaining on camera are all privileged looking and if they have no job Im wondering how are the affording cocktails and fancy clothing etc. Instead the influencer should be telling them what all us sligtly older folk no, sometimes you have to take a job that you do no enjoy and were your way up from the bottom.

My point being, they are overlooking the man was done for Civil sxl assault and property fraud along with getting into presidency via illegal means with 34 felony counts. How do young women get on board with this guy when he wants to take away a lot of their civil and human rights?

I sounds like the Georgia case may not be wrapped up by election end but will have mini hearings which will have public near real time reporting which will give the public a feel for his involvement in organising (or not), the riots.

My other bug bare is media going to town on Biden stuttering, clearly losing his train of thought, but nobody seems to be concentrating on the lies and what Trump said. What is a "Black Job"? He has also prior been accused by specialists on YT of having actual dementia not just old age, slurring words, making words up to finish sentences, straight out forgetting what he was talking about. He has done a Biden at many many of is rallies. Yet we suppose to believe he aced a preliminary cognitive test, twice he said, something like he was told nobody has done better. He needs both a neurological and a psychological assessment. Biden supposedly had a neurological assessment in February, but I think given both their age they should have a neurological and psychiatric assessment done and open disclosure o the public like Biden does with his.

New York Times: A Republican Platform That Could Read Like a Trump Rally
...
All three are among the 112 delegates serving on the Republican Party’s national platform committee, which will assemble in Milwaukee on Monday to spend the next two days writing the first G.O.P. platform since 2016.

The primary goal is a “short form” 2024 document that is a pledge of allegiance to former President Donald J. Trump rather than the statement of party values the platform has traditionally been, according to interviews with a dozen platform representatives and other Republicans. Mr. Trump’s top campaign advisers, Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles, have already stated their intention of producing a “streamlined platform,” with policy specifics kept to a bare minimum.

That just so reads as a Monarchy. or more so a Cult.

Is there any way, for the President or the people to over turn the SCOTUS ruling?

It wouldnt be so bad if you could use Evidence when the President was up to no good for personal gain. That was a silly bit to chuck in there.

I saw the Senators are screaming for a special counsel investigation into Justice Thomas Clarence. I must have a listen to the news on it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HiQgqL2tOAY

Geeze these SCOTUS judges can earn some serious paper from donations. The worrying bit here is the circa $1.5M not disclosed and the fact hes refusing to do so through his lawyer. Was he one of the 3 Trump appointed?

I didnt pay much attention to these flight donations at the time  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdVVbfeYbbM

It was a genius bit to chuck in there, if you suppose their motivations were to protect Donald Trump rather than to protect US democracy. With that in there, even the stuff that you think you could argue is not an official act is next to impossible to prove, because you can't actually use any evidence to show it. Thus in practice almost anything the president does is now open season because you can tie up the courts for years arguing over the nuances of this decision.

And the coolest part about it is that the only people who need the immunity in the first place are the exact same people who should never get it. Congress threatening to impeach you? Have Seal Team 6 take a couple of the loudest ones out. Seal Team 6 commander refuses your order? Just keep asking until you find someone who will, and have them kill the Seal Team 6 commander first. You are the commander in chief of the military. You have the literal legal power to order the death of several billion people, so surely taking out one insubordinate general is A-OK.

Like, if you are Donald Trump, the practical applications of this ruling are limitless.

We should be scared if Donald Trump wins.

We should be terrified of whoever replaces him. Because they'll be younger and smarter.

hehe, they have said he still needs to abide by common law and some of the hypotheticals that were floated would not be justified, ie you cant just end people. also even if he could it would be local law enforcement as military have some reason why they cant get involved in civil.

but I do agree it is worrying from a monarchial fascistic perspective, just another hitler potential. There is a team working on how to solve the US justices problem of being able to be stacked and having life tenure, ie moving to something consistent with more effective democracies.

NZ has a lot of reason to worry that they dont seem to be doing, as usual most people live in a bubble in NZ.

These unexplained gifts to two of the judges looks like it will end up in a quick investigation.

Immunity for the President doesn't cover the rest of Cabinet. "The I was following orders" defense hasn't flown since 1945.
