Shooter said to be identified and the weapon said to be a rifle. There is a dead individual wearing camoflauge clothing on a nearby white roof.

How will the markets react when they open? any ideas how to profit from this news.

Invest in gun, tiki torches, white bedsheets, rope, tar and feathers? Maybe long-term investments in gold, portable power generators, and survival gear. Local in NZ build bunkers to rent to fleeing Americans?

It's a big country. Other than locations of the RNC convention this week and the Democratic convention next week it's probably not a concern. Other than avoiding any politics discussions ; )

I was in NYC  less than 2 months after 911, by myself , and it was very uncomfortable.

What kind of person wants to profit from people being assaulted and killed? Aren't things already bad enough?

JPNZ: What an incredible day! This is an attack on democracy. This pretty much guarantees Trump victory in the election.

I don't follow your logic. Please explain.

I think there's a lot of undecided voters who may assume that this is all the doing of the Demonic Democrat party and this will sway them to vote Trump. Trump himself will play up the persecution complex that he's had since the 2020 election was "stolen" from him. I can imagine his rhetoric now. "The unhinged left tried to murder me because I love America so much and they know I'll win in November and save the country and so they had to stop me. BTW, I'm basically Jesus etc etc"

America is in a bad way at the moment, but most people individually are decent and friendly and helpful. It is a big place and unless you are unlucky, you should have a perfectly enjoyable and even uplifting time. Be sensible and watch out for warning signs but don't obsess about it. The chances that you will have a wonderful experience greatly outweigh the possibility that you won't.

BBC interviews eyewitness who claims with his group and other people to have seen the alleged shooter bear-crawling on a roof with a rifle and tried to alert police two to three minutes before shots were fired.

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cn4v7v2g5l1o

This will spawn conspiracy theories like nothing else. The witness appears to be a normal level headed Trump supporter guy just saying what he saw.

From the kill-Trump discussion elsewhere:

It's no longer the Republican Party, it's the Retrumplican Party.  He's turned it onto his personal empire and made sure there are no effective challengers present.  Take him away and the whole lot will disintegrate into infighting among the incompetent cronies who have no-one to protect them any more.  It's the same thing that killing Hitler would have done, he made sure there was no-one to succeed him, meaning pose a threat to him, which also meant there was no-one competent to take over once he was gone.

Seriously, Google "Murder map: Deadliest U.S. cities"

The U.S. embassy is surprisingly candid about unsafe places and potential hotspots. See US embassy, NZ Also surprisingly, the US state department will also be candid about international hotspots.

I had a friend who even visited murder capital Birmingham Alabama. He was naïve enough to take an unguided car trip throughout Birmingham which was uneventful. One area he visited, without knowing, was "owned" by violent drug dealers. He didn't know tell I told him afterwards.

I told him he was as close to getting killed as any other time in his life.

Unfortunately there are many cities where it's safe, then two blocks away it's dangerous.

The locals will know what's what. Just don't trust locals hanging out at tourist spots, airports. If someone you just met is guiding you to a cheap spot with a free ride, and won't take "no" as an answer, walk away.

And for another example, try walking through the South of Market area in San Francisco.  At one point a group of maybe 8-10 of us had to go through there and walked, by unanimous consensus we called a series of cabs to take us back out.

Here we go - the "conspiracy" posts have started:

Associated Press - Trump campaign advisor publishes then deletes social media post

Trump campaign senior adviser Chris LaCivita responded to the shooting with a post on X.

Well of course they tried too keep him off the ballot, they tried to put him in jail and now you see this ...” he wrote.

The post was later deleted.

We walked from the then Westfield Plaza to the train station by 4th and King to grab a train the Cupertino (Apple HQ...) and back again.
