And for another example, try walking through the South of Market area in San Francisco.  At one point a group of maybe 8-10 of us had to go through there and walked, by unanimous consensus we called a series of cabs to take us back out.

I also stayed at a hostel on 110th at the end of Centra park NYC...Harlem. Got picked up by a friend from Long Island as where I was is not safe, especially at night.

Oh, I've walked through SoMa at night as well to get to a $150/night hotel that charged $50/night because of its location, took off my watch and put it in my pocket, hands in pockets, looked down in front of me so as to avoid any eye contact, and walked a rather lengthy route through more populated streets rather than the direct one.  It's not something I'd advise doing though, and when a FOAF and SFO resident heard about it told me to cancel the hotel booking and offered his spare room to stay in.

Edited to add: Having someone show us his hand with a finger missing at the second joint, which happened during a mugging in SoMa, helped clinch the deal.

I got hit up outside of the Berlin Railway Station in Germany bu an English guy and. German girl asking if I was looking for accommodation ( I was). They gave me a business card so I dropped that into the envelope of a letter I was sending back home to my Mum and Kids figuring if it went wrong... They were awesome people, gave me a lot of info on things to see.

I suspect things will have changed for Trump's next rally, thusly:

"Good afternoon sir, welcome to the rally. I'll just scan your GOP chips...Right, three tickets?"

"Yeah. Me and the wife. The kid's half price?"

"Certainly sir. Flak jackets?"

"Two big ones."

"And the child...?"

"Nah, he can run quicker than we can."

"Very good, sir. Helmets?"

"Two. The kid don't need one, he'll run better if he c'n see where he's goin'."

"Very good, sir. Weapons or ammunition?"

"Me and her got Uzzis. How a coupla grenades and a mini Glock for the kid?"

"A wise choice sir. Good luck and enjoy the rally."

kingdragonfly: I had a friend who even visited murder capital Birmingham Alabama. He was naïve enough to take an unguided car trip throughout Birmingham which was uneventful. One area he visited, without knowing, was "owned" by violent drug dealers. He didn't know tell I told him afterwards.

Years ago a friend of mine took me on a tour of the bits of SFO that they don't mention in the tourist guides, including the street where you go to buy heroin.  He said it was perfectly safe there because the drug dealers kept undesirable elements away as it interfered with business.

Oy vey, what a place.

If Trump events were open carry with no restrictions then everyone would be safer.
The crowd can defend themselves and the leader.

The same Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe-v-Wade abortion rights voted for this one too. Clarence Thomas wrote for the majority.

For some background on gun rights in the US, see New York State Rifle & Pistol Association, Inc. v. Bruen

The case concerned the constitutionality of a 1911 New York State law requiring applicants for a pistol concealed carry license to show "proper cause", or a special need distinguishable from that of the general public, in their application.

In a 6–3 decision, the Supreme Court ruled that New York's law was unconstitutional. The ability to carry a pistol in public was a constitutional right guaranteed by the Second Amendment. The Court ruled that states [that] "arbitrary" evaluations of need made by local authorities are unconstitutional.

BBC News - Political rallies 'will be very different' from now on: congressman

today

Andy Biggs, a Republican congressman from Arizona, has told me he believes rallies - a core aspect to any political campaign - will be different after today.

"My guess is that when you do a rally from now on, it's going to be an indoor venue where you have more control than what we've seen at these outdoor venues."

The area where Trump held his Pennsylvania rally was open and outdoors, with buildings in the vicinity.

The area I mentioned where my friend wanderlust took him in Birmingham Alabama, the drug dealers were brazen enough to put up a roadblock at night. They considered anyone entering to be there for illegal drug business, or residences sympathetic to the drug dealers. I guess it covered 16 square blocks. The roadblock happen to be down when he visited. It was one block away from a 4 lane major thoroughfare.

For a while the purported most dangerous street corner in the US was in the Washington DC area, the nation's capital. You could see the the Washington monument, across a river.

Also located in the northeast part of Washington, D.C., Brentwood is considered the most dangerous neighborhood. In 2022, it had 1,715 violent crimes and 7,556 property crimes in a community of approximately 28,660 residents.

New Orleans also turns very dangerous very fast once you're away from French Quarter. Being heavily drunk and wandering into an unsafe neighborhood is not good.

Washington Post: Trump allies immediately blame Biden, Democrats for their rhetoric

Top allies of Donald Trump quickly accused President Biden and his supporters of using rhetoric that led to a shooting and potential assassination attempt Saturday at a Trump campaign rally in Butler, Pa., even as Biden condemned the attack and called on the nation to unite against political violence.

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), a potential Trump running mate, said in a statement on social media that the shooting was “not just some isolated incident.”

“The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs,” Vance wrote. “That rhetoric led directly to President Trump’s attempted assassination.”

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.), another Trump ally, shared a similar sentiment. “Let’s be clear: This was an assassination attempt aided and abetted by the radical Left and corporate media incessantly calling Trump a threat to democracy, fascists, or worse,” he wrote on social media.

At the time of those statements, there was no public reporting on the motives of the shooter.

Republican word games:

The "radical Left" Democrats are center right by NZ standards, and the Republicans are (now) far, far right (AKA fascists).   🙄

It's actually by global standards, one of the big UK universities, possibly UCL, published something on this a few years ago but I've lost the original source.  But yeah, the US doesn't have a left, just centre-right and far right.  Google search term: Overton window.

If Trump wins election. Is there any reason to think "he"/US would come to our aide in NZ, given he is transactional?

Tired of all the rich people on Twitter turning this into political, and I thought Msk said he wouldnt use X as his own Political platform?

Back to the legals, even though Thomas did not declare his gifts or pay taxes on apprpriate ones, he has done nothing illegal? Im confused by it. Both him and Ellito accused of no recusing themselves from conflict of interest cases, I presume to do with republican member donations? (bit confusing)

Trump's suspected shooter, who was killed, used an AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle.

The Supreme Court recently revoked the ban of bump stock. A bump stock legally modified AR-15 can fire 400 to 800 rounds per minute, without a special license. In other words in the eyes of the Supreme Court, a 22 bolt action rifle and what's effectively an automatic assault rifle are equal.

I disagree with the following video.

Quotes from this video
four guys with guns were going to break into your home or business and try to brutally murder you.
...
At the height of the protest during civil unrest you're dealing with a mob mentality in mobs people do things they normally wouldn't do ... You can be on the wrong side of the mob and if that mob decides to come your direction you're going to need an AR-15 for protection"
...
"you need an AR-15 to protect yourself during a natural disaster or shit the fan scenario. Natural disasters can happen at any moment and happen way more frequently than civil unrest ... you'll likely be living in a lawless environment"
...
"why would you want the fight for your life to be an uneven match? I want what the criminal is trying to use against me or better so if criminals have AR-15s that they could possibly use against you then you need an AR-15 so that you can fight back against them."
...
Pew Research Center found that only 2 in 10 Americans say they trust the government in Washington to do what
is right"
If my opinion, any criminal would stop after the first shot fired, even from a 22 pistol, unless they are insane.

He also seems to believe a natural disaster will quickly devolve into a Mad Max/zombie apocalypse scenario.

fn this is his world outlook, that he needs an assault rifle, he needs psychiatrist care and definitely should not be given any weapon of any kind.

Top 5 reasons you need an AR-15
