freitasm: Why do a Congress investigation? It is a police matter.

I don't know why either (seems a bit pointless to me, on a very basic level security was probably a bit lax plus the venue was outside in the wide open), but that's exactly what House Republicans are going to do:

https://www.axios.com/2024/07/14/trump-rally-shooting-oversight-comer-secret-service

Maybe James Comer needs to show Trump he's being "useful" to him and he should keep him around? I'm sure Jim Jordan, Marjorie thingo and Matthew Gaetz won't take too long to get in behind him.

Yet strangely none of them seem to be mentioning the shooter was a Republican (yet).

Some of the memes I was referring to on the last page:

and finally:

There are quite a few of them (these are the ones I saw quickly just now), but most of them are along the lines of being quite clear in pointing out the (endless) Republican hypocrisy around the lack of gun control in the US - unless one of them is the victim of a shooting.

Note that I don't like Trump but I certainly didn't want him shot or anything. I suspect this will turn him into a martyr now.

The police need to be told what the results must be ?
Them doing an independent investigation and not coming up with the "right" evidence would be bad.

freitasm:

This one is gold: "Crooks was registered as a Republican and was in active voting status, according to the database service LexisNexis."

Yet, the influencers on twitter talking about deep state, its all over, our new president just got elected, yet it was one of their own. i bet nobody points this out now.

I was looking at the YT site of the shirt mentioned, typical pro second amendment stuff.

If memory serves the last political assassination attempt was John Hinckley Jr. He attempted to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981. He had a delusional obsession with actress Jodie Foster. His motivation for the assassination attempt was to impress Foster. When asked about Reagan, Hinckley described him as a “nice man and a good president”

My guess is that the Republicans thought it would secretly hoping a Democrat was involved, so wanted some quick "political hay" (To take advantage of something for one's own political gain.)

Given the AK-47 assault weapon, the pro-gun t-shirt, and that he's was/is a Republican, it appears he's not the assassin the Republicans would have liked.

But when have the Republicans had the patience to allow the full facts come to light first?

It's getting in first and then directing them into echo chambers that is the important thing.

Truth/Facts can then get written off as "deep state" BS.

So true. It was an ak? It will be interesting if any manifesto comes to light as to why Trmp.

now they all using a quote from biden 5 days ago hitting back at media re his stutter/names issue, and now time to focus on Trmp. Im not sure the exact words, but no doubt to serve the bias thoughts around things like deep state, all to take the heat of this being one of their own.

too many watching action movies for ppl who think reality TV is real.

And unsurprisingly, the deflection and finger-pointing from Trump's buddies towards the left has already started (this is from Wikipedia):

Republican U.S. Representative Mike Collins of Georgia called for a Republican prosecutor to charge Joe Biden for inciting an assassination. Republican Senator J. D. Vance of Ohio blamed the Biden presidential campaign's political rhetoric, while Republican Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina blamed messaging by "the radical Left and corporate media."

So despite Trump's non-stop aggressiveness and threats towards Democrats (and Biden), this is somehow a case of Biden personally ordering this to happen, yet the shooter was a Republican, and Biden called Trump afterwards to check he was okay - however if the situation was vice versa...? Riiiiiiiiight 🙄

The only description of the weapon I've seen is that it was an AR style. The gunman was supposedly outside the security cordon but he was on a rooftop on the boundary of the venue about 120m from Trump. There were security snipers on the roofs close to Trump. I can't believe that none of them saw the shooter. I wouldn't be surprised if the camo clothing and US military style weapon led them to assume Crooks was part of the security. In any case a spectacular fail.

Whoops, got it confused the American AR-15-style semiautomatic rifle confused with its more reliable Russian cousin.

Both of them have such big families, yet they're as close as Alabama siblings.

They would have absolutely 100% known where everyone was in the security detail and they would have been there before Trump turned up and would have checked in with each other regularly, so they knew 100% who it was, what they were covering etc etc. They would ALL have been looking for something out of place.

This was not a fail, it smacks of a level of incompetence that is unbelievable , no one gets into that kind of job by being that useless.

I saw a comment that they were surprised there were no drones used to look out for things away from sight lines.

ALL the security detail should be stood down, separated , and interviewed by people from multiple agencies who themselves have been screened. And there certainly needs to be no "delay delay delay" imposed by Congress/Senate.

Posted by New York Post, not the most reliable source.

It's reported the shooter made a $15 donation to a pro-Democrat organization. Motive is still unclear I believe.

That isn't unusual. Americans often vote two or three ways depending on local, state and federal candidates. Modern assasins are nearly always just nuts. There is every chance this shooter is from the same bag.

From the Telegraph, it's low-quality source of articles that leans right.

Telegraph: Thomas Matthew Crooks: Registered Republican and gun lover who shot Trump

The man who shot Donald Trump has been unmasked as a 20-year-old registered Republican who was bullied at school and had an obsession with guns.

Classmates described Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was killed by a special forces sniper after firing from a nearby roof at the former US president during a Pennsylvania rally, as an “outcast” who was relentlessly teased about his appearance.

A car belonging to the gunman was found on Sunday parked near the rally laden with explosives.

Bomb-making materials were also discovered at his family home after heavily-armed US security agents carried out a raid on the property in Bethel Park, a village about an hour’s drive south of Butler, the small and hard-up post-industrial town where he tried to shot Trump.

Crooks was reportedly wearing a T-shirt bearing the emblem of a pro-gun YouTube channel when he carried out the assassination attempt by firing a volley of bullets towards the stage a few minutes after Trump began speaking.

Crooks opened fire while the former US president was addressing a crowd in Butler, Pennsylvania, leaving one audience member dead and two others badly hurt.
