kingdragonfly: Trump ups the ante on tariffs, vowing massive taxes on goods from Mexico, Canada and China on Day 1: CNN

“On January 20th, as one of my many first Executive Orders, I will sign all necessary documents to charge Mexico and Canada a 25% Tariff on ALL products coming into the United States, and its ridiculous Open Borders,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. “This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!”

Can Trump override NAFTA/USMCA on a whim?

kingdragonfly:

President-elect Donald Trump on Monday promised massive hikes in tariffs on goods coming from Mexico, Canada and China starting on the first day of his administration, a policy that could sharply increase costs for American businesses and consumers.

Also, I think this is satire. Or maybe not?

neb: Meanwhile US media is full of stories of panic buying as people with at least some understanding of economics try and front-run the price hikes, including guides on what to buy and how soon to buy it.

Though I have trepidation Trump's going to mess up economies world wide, for the moment I feel some schadenfreude

It would be very interesting indeed, if the world's markets simply started a tit-for-tat trade war and placed identical tariffs on US imports, thereby devaluing their economy. At the same time, taking up the Euro or other currency as the dominant trading currency.

The US and it's Trump-led isolationist policies would see that country bankrupt in a matter of a few short years.

EDIT: With the exception of my chinese-made Apple products, I am struggling to think of any American products that I willingly or knowingly purchase.
I understand that many manufacturers from countries like Japan and the UK use US-sourced components or designs, but I'd say that the actual products themselves are not American.

I think entertainment is about it. Netflix, Prime, D+, Apple TV+, Hollywood-created content etc

I could probably live without it if I was asked to.

I reckon we could get by on Doctor Who and gritty Norwegian crime dramas for a couple of years.

How Tariffs Actually Work ft. Liz Dye

LegalEagle

Trump: "the word 'tariff' is the most beautiful word in the dictionary. Remember that."

Commentator: Wow. So if we tariff the exports from other countries, they'll just pay us money with no downsides?

Why didn't we try this before? Because that's not how tariffs work. And we have tried this before and it might have caused the Great Depression.

Just after the election people suddenly started to search for how tariffs work and who pays for tariffs.

Donald Trump has promised to slap 60% tariffs on all Goods coming in from China and a 10% tariff on Goods imported from all other countries on the campaign trail. He even threatened to impose a whopping 100% tariff on auto Imports from America's largest trading partner Mexico.

The centre-right Tax Foundation defines tariffs as taxes imposed by one country on goods imported from another country. Effectively a tax on consumer goods paid by all Americans who wants to buy stuff

if Trump does intend to impose massive tariffs, he'll have IIPA, the Trade Expansion Act and several other congressional delegations of legal authority to rely on. Those laws were intended for using wartime or actual emergencies and not as a bargaining chip to threaten other countries into changing the terms of deals we've already negotiated but the language in the statutes is vague enough to give Trump legal cover to do more or less whatever he wants when it comes to tariffs.

American consumers could lose between $46 billion and $78 billion in spending power each year if new tariffs on imports to the United States are implemented, according to a new study released today by the National Retail Federation.

Estimated Impacts of Proposed Tariffs on Imports: Apparel, Toys, Furniture, Household Appliances, Footwear and Travel Goods: National Retail Federation

"Key findings from the study include:

The proposed tariffs on the six product categories alone would reduce American consumers’ spending power by $46 billion to $78 billion every year the tariffs are in place.

The proposed tariffs would have a significant and detrimental impact on the costs of a wide range of consumer products sold in the United States, particularly on products where China is the major supplier.

The increased costs as a result of the proposed tariffs would be too large for U.S. retailers to absorb and would result in prices higher than many consumers would be willing or able to pay.

For all categories examined, total average tariffs would exceed 50% in the extreme tariff scenario, up in most cases from single or low double digits currently. "

I know we don't do Thanksgiving here, but I still found this pretty funny:

😀

Also: Trump gets schooled on how tariffs work - by Mexico's (female) president: https://www.thebulwark.com/i/152238304/quick-hits

I mention the fact that she's a female as I get the impression he detests any notion of any woman being in a position of power.

(the rest of that Bulwark page is interesting reading too, especially the part about "The bootlicker cabinet" - very apt!)

A reporter tries to live on Trump's "diet" (lol) for a week, while a nutritionist rates its nutritional value (low).

The orange buffoon and his mates are constantly banging on about him having a "mandate" to do whatever the hell he wants given he won the election - but The Bulwark points out that he doesn't, really:

https://www.thebulwark.com/p/calling-trumps-win-a-mandate-is-ridiculous-no-support-for-policy-agenda

(looking at the tariffs point as it's been mentioned above - the public won't support them if it means prices will be going up for anything:

Tariffs. When VoteCast asked about “increasing taxes on goods imported to the U.S. from other countries,” voters split almost evenly: 49 percent in favor, 50 percent against. Polls taken since the election suggest that the political balance might tip slightly in Trump’s favor when the word “tariffs” is used instead of “taxes,” but the balance tips against Trump when the tariffs are substantial. In general, the numbers indicate that if the public feels the cost of tariffs, sentiment will turn against them.
