Now with Europe and its tariffs, I can 'somewhat' understand to support your neighboring nations to build their economies under EU umbrella.

Having stable neighbors is a good idea.
So you see things made in Poland, Slovenia, Baltics, even Turkey gets something as the infamous Vestel is there assembling TVs even though its not fully in the EU.

USA could do this to decide to foster development and have stable neighbors that could deal with drugs and corruption fed by demand in USA creating better Americas.

Creating opportunities for their people to have decent lives in their home country.
It would as UK citizens found out ( for a while ) allow you to choose cheaper place to live out retirement if you don't mind learning another language.

Though
It would cramp the style of business employing/exploiting day labor in farming, construction, gardening/landscaping, golf courses, hospitality and many manuel labor jobs.

Problem is that manufacturing in Mexico etc is more visible than in China.
Its easy to create disaffection about this. Factory in China no one really noticed much.

So Canada and Mexico especially become hated targets.

On the back of this: https://www.thebulwark.com/p/trumps-vengeance-tour-has-already

Going forward, how are we going to hash out how much the government spends and on what? Through a combination of public edicts from Elon Musk and harried Fox News appearances from Speaker Mike Johnson, apparently. Musk denounced Johnson’s short-term spending plan to keep the government open in last night, forcing the man third in line to the presidency to scurry to do damage control.

“I was communicating with Elon last night,” Johnson said on Fox News this morning. “Elon, Vivek [Ramaswamy], and I are on a text chain together and I was explaining to them the background of this. And then Vivek and I talked last night until almost midnight. . . . They understand the situation. They said, ‘It’s not directed at you, Mr. Speaker, but we don’t like the spending.’ And I said, ‘Guess what, fellas? I don’t either.’”

Are we allowed to be consoled that the speaker of the House isn’t having much fun either?

😀

Well Elon is actually responsible for many billions of $ of Government spending to himself.
That spending not resulting in meeting targeted and agreed timelines for delivery for NASA's 3Bilion dollar contract for one.
I gather he is asking for a few more billion and it maybe part of why he went full Trump to assure it.

In the spirit of showing accountability for spending he could give it all back !

Grinding Government services to a halt.
Creating misery for workers who don't get paid and start having banks chasing them for mortgage payments and such.
Services 'including NASA and FAA that are critical to his launches' as well.

This does not seem very 'Smartest Men in any Room' when in a scant month or two you are in complete control.
To create economic chaos for many business that depend on Government services.

Anyone contracting to Government also does not get paid, so hits private sector in a number of ways.

Replying to the Assad cartoon (there's no text to quote), Assad would be unpalatable for pretty much any civilised nation on earth.  Here's a Channel 4 News report on mass graves in Syria, with a warning that some may find it disturbing.

I feel that most Americans like Canadians more than they like fellow Americans.

When Canadians are described, it's often as "overly polite"

"AA" is quasi-religious "alcoholics anonymous." See related "12 step programs"

"AAA" is "American Automobile Association", a private, not-for-profit motor club that provides services and information to drivers in North America.

Hilarious writeup on Trump, Elon and co on The Bulwark today: https://www.thebulwark.com/p/the-worlds-richest-man-wants-to-burn

Also from CNN: https://edition.cnn.com/2024/12/19/politics/trump-musk-capitol-chaos-analysis/index.html

It was not immediately clear how closely Trump and Musk were coordinating. But the timeline of Musk’s pressure and the president-elect’s belated entry into the public fray offered demoralized Democrats an opening. New York Rep. Dan Goldman conjured a scenario on X clearly calculated to get under the president-elect’s skin. “As the shadow Pres-Elect, Elon Musk is now calling the shots for House Rs on government funding while Trump hides in Mar-a-Lago behind his handlers,” Goldman wrote. “It increasingly seems like we’re in for 4 years of an unelected oligarch running the country by pulling on his puppet’s strings.”

I can imagine the tomato sauce getting thrown at the walls of Maralago already 😀

A few Trump, uh, "inspired" cartoons for your Saturday morning:

^ (technically, he's not in office yet - but already saying it's "very hard" to bring down grocery prices)

^ speaks for itself, really - I think that image of Musk jumping at the Trump rally is going to follow him around for a long time yet

^ "who's today's target? I'm bored."

While I acknowledge the next two are fake/AI generated, they're actually quite effective (and clever):

(note the orange buffoon scowling in the background) 😀

"It's A Worm-derful Life" - A Late Show Animated Holiday Classic

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

"Santa and his workshop are, like America, having a bumpy sleigh ride transitioning to the incoming Trump administration.

When Elon Musk is put in charge of Christmas efficiency as part of his D.O.U.C.H.E. program, Santa must either pledge absolute loyalty, or face a gladiator battle of ancient Roman proportions.

Will Father Christmas survive?

Will Joe Biden stay awake through the entire special?

Will RFK Jr.'s brainworms have enough brain meat left to eat this winter?"

Donald Trump Responds to 'President Musk' Talk Growing: NewsWeek

President-elect Donald Trump's team has dismissed criticism regarding the influence of billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk amid spending bill negotiations. [This includes killing a popular child cancer research project]

Karoline Leavitt, Trump's incoming White House press secretary, told Business Insider: "As soon as President Trump released his official stance on the CR [continuing resolution], Republicans on Capitol Hill echoed his point of view. President Trump is the leader of the Republican Party. Full stop."
...
A number of Democratic figures have condemned what they say is the power Musk wields over the president-elect and Congress ahead of a looming government shutdown. Some Democrats have suggested Musk is the actual "president" and that Trump is following his lead in the negotiations.
...

Elon Musk posted on X: "A super fair & simple bill was put to a vote and only 2 Democrats in Congress were in favor. Therefore, responsibility for the shutdown rests squarely on the shoulders of [Democrat House Minority Leader] Jeffries."

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on X: "Elon Musk ordered his puppet President-elect and House Republicans to break the bipartisan agreement reached to keep the government open. House Republicans are abdicating their responsibility to the American people and siding with billionaires and special interests."

Democrat Senator Chris Murphy: "We had a deal to avert a shutdown. Musk et al blew it up because it didn't help billionaires enough. They wrote a new bill to cut cancer treatment for kids and grease a new tax cut for the rich. That failed too—and now they're panicking because everyone is seeing the grift."
...
Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin: "We had many weeks of negotiation with the Republicans. We arrived at a bipartisan legislative compromise—the Senate Democrats, Senate Republicans, House Democrats, House Republicans—everybody agreed. And then it was blown up by Elon Musk, who apparently has become the fourth branch of government."

Democrat Rep. Dan Goldman: "It's not Donald Trump asking for this, it's very clearly President Elon Musk asking for this. The fact that Donald Trump has been completely AWOL during these negotiations, to the point where only after Elon Musk publicly tweets about his displeasure about this budget deal, all of a sudden Donald Trump, chief of staff to Elon Musk, comes trotting in and blows up the deal."

Republican Senator Mike Lee: "[Republican house leader Johnson] is a good man. He's been a good friend for a long time. But he's lost control of this process. I don't know how he can remain in power. Elon or Vivek [Ramaswamy] as speaker."

Democrat Rep. Pramila Jayapal: "It's clear who's in charge, and it's not President-elect Donald Trump. Shadow President Elon Musk spent all day railing against Republicans' CR, succeeded in killing the bill, and then Trump decided to follow his lead."
