The Washington Post - Opinion - What Americans should remember about Jan. 6  (unlocked link)

Guest Essay by President Joe Biden    05 Jan 2025

"On this Jan. 6, order will be called. Clerks, staff and members of Congress will gather to certify the results of a free and fair presidential election and ensure a peaceful transfer of power. ... "

[Biden promises a smooth transition of power.]

Difficult to summarize, but brief and worth reading ...

Is WAPO atoning for refusing publication of the recent anti-Trump cartoon?

Here's something I don't say often: The Green party has a really good idea: the west and east coast of the US should join Canada.

Regarding Elizabeth May's statement "No more one-year-olds [Americans] who suddenly fall off the Medicaid list", she's referring to little known outside the US that US children turning one year old, the income threshold for Medicaid eligibility often becomes stricter. Families that qualified for Medicaid while the child was an infant may no longer meet the stricter income requirements once the child is 1 years old.

She has a lot more zinger against Trump, but the newspaper left out a lot of them. Worth checking out video below. Chek News in Canada is well regarded.

Canada Green party politician Elizabeth May claps back at Trump saying ‘we don’t want to be 51st state,’ offers making California 11th province: Chek News

Canada’s federal Green Party leader Elizabeth May had some feisty words for U.S. president-elect Donald Trump after weeks of Trump’s jabs offering to make Canada the 51st U.S. state.

...“I take offence. We do not strive to be the 51st state, we’re a G7 country.”

...“You think we want to be the 51st state? Nah, but maybe California would like to be the 11th province,” she said.

“How ‘bout it, California? Oregon? Washington? We’ve got geography in common,” said May, adding that British Columbians are already comfortable with our southern neighbours in the Cascadia region.

She also poked fun at policy differences between Canada and the U.S. to try to sweeten the Cascadia offer.

“This is what we’ve got for you: Free healthcare, universal, free healthcare. No more one-year-olds who suddenly fall off the Medicaid list and their parents are on the news because they’re trying to do a GoFundMe, because they’re trying to get their daughter to a doctor,” she said.

“California citizens, Washington, Oregon – safer streets here, we already have strict gun laws, and women have the right to an abortion under the universal healthcare system.”

One hopes Elizabeth May, is a practical person. Like James :-)

Unlike Jill Stein
The one with the Trump is just the same as having a Democrat administration message.

In Canada the 'Rise of the Right' may be just as much a threat as anywhere else
https://time.com/6696097/canadian-far-right/

You start threatening America and you 'May' have just achieved a giant boost for the Right.
Flooding their warchest as Mericans send money across the boarder.

The left is fragmenting itself with the impractical.
Making it difficult to work with moderate left or center.
'I want it all, and I want it Now', or my uncounted protest vote.

Its also how that disaster Netanyahu squeaked into power.
Israel had 10 or more parties slugging it out, and votes on the left were lost to fragmentation.
Rather than seeing an existential threat and seeking unity in a critical election.

Meanwhile the right does deals to get power and voters coalesce on most winnable.

Le-Pen , Farage counting on this for their rise plus others.

Hopefully Elizabeth May is cut from more serious and practical cloth.

I think we have moved beyond "boys will be boys" attitude for Republicans. Last election, the right won in the US.

In 2009, former Texas Governor Rick Perry suggested Texas could secede. When there was blowback, he said he was speaking metaphorically.

In 2021, Bryan Slaton, a Republican in the Texas House of Representatives, introduced legislation to hold a referendum on whether Texas should investigate the possibility of independence.

In both case no one in Austin Texas, the state capital organized, armed marches, carrying torches at night, a la a KKK march, and used a car to mow down counter-protestors.

Former United States Al Franken Senator mugged for the camera (derp/meme/goofy photograph) pretending to squeeze a sleeping airline passenger's bosom. It was distasteful, and a one-off. There was no physical contact. He certainly did not get a "boys will be boys" treatment and he resigned.

Trump recorded describing his attempt to seduce a married woman and indicated he might start kissing a woman that he was about to meet. He added, "I don't even wait. And when you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. ... Grab 'em by the pussy. You can do anything." He doesn't apologize and it's brushed off as locker room talk.

When Trump extensively said that the 2024 was rigged, and unfair, up to the point when he won. No one raise hangman's gallows in Mar Largo.

Now Trump threatens to take three countries. And again it's "boys will be boys", he's only joking.

So maybe we should treat both sides of the aisle the same.

I think you'll find the policy of presidential candidate Jill Stein was exactly the same as the consensus developed policy of the Green Party USA.

The Green Party USA isn't like the Republican or Democratic party where the selected candidate can randomly change policy as they go along and make things up to get more votes.

The level of invective I've seen against Jill Stein personally is surprising.

This is the standard US far-right dog-ate-my-homework response when they get caught taking things too far.  "Mexican rapists are coming into the US, immigrants are eating cats in Springfield, Jews are plotting to destroy the US and we need to do something about them.... oh, that last one? I was only joking, can't you tell that?".

Harris certifies Trump's win. Shockingly, 0 Democrats stage a large protest or attempt to storm the Capitol to try and stop it all from happening 🙄

The NY Times - Trump raises the possibility of using military or economic force to take Greenland and the Panama Canal.

breaking

President-elect Donald J. Trump said Tuesday that he would not rule out the use of military or economic coercion to force Panama to give up control of the canal America built more than a century ago and to force Denmark to sell Greenland to the United States. ...

As Trump threatened to use military force to wrest back control of the Panama Canal, it should be noted that Panama has no army, per its constitution. “The Republic of Panama shall have no army,” the charter reads, adding that police forces may also protect the country’s borders in the event of external threats. “All Panamanians are obliged to take up arms to defend the national independence and territorial integrity of the State.”

Is Donald going into full senile Dictator mode?  🙄

If you couldn't be stuffed sitting through the orange buffoon's entire press conference at Maralago as per above (and I know I certainly couldn't, 10 seconds of his voice is more than enough for me to stand), here's a high-level summary:

With the first point, how is that meant to help Americans with a cost-of-living crisis?

The Washington Post - Trump declines to rule out ‘military or economic’ force to expand U.S.

today  (some choice extracts ☺️)

Speaking for roughly 70 minutes in a meandering news conference from his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida, Trump emphasized his ambitions for territorial expansion, however implausible. ...

The news conference marked the latest vivid display of Trump’s penchant for rambling tangents, insults, false statements and hyperbole. ...

The president-elect promised to usher in a “golden age of America,” speaking from a gilded room decorated with an elaborate grand piano and chandelier. ...

Thanks American voters.

Your stupidity brings shame to your founding founders you profess to love.

Now the world will definitely be more chaotic. Unless you're one an American with these careers, you'll be worst off in 4 years than now

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/opinion/opinion-biden-should-pardon-the-jan-6-insurrectionists/ar-AA1x4jgT?cvid=ecfb08d173bc4868a5efb976cd5654c7&ei=17

Interesting viewpoint - maybe Biden should pardon the January 6 insurrectionists instead of the orange buffoon, achieving two things: (1) he beats the latter to it, and (2) as a sign of forgiveness and moving on.

Dunno if Biden would do this or not, but it's an interesting idea. Might help break down some of the political division the US is currently experiencing - and it's not like Biden's got much to lose from doing it (given he won't be running for president ever again).

Oh please please please can the Scottish government mull over the idea publicly about a bunch of drunken old men from Glasgow are going to invade Trumps golf and annex it so that it become Scottish property again......and put a caveat on the property saying sex offenders are barred from owning or being on that land.
